Before: Hannigan thought to be useful, shopworn goods, lacking physical supremacy--Davidson hoping to use youth and vigor--and a reported “hurricane” body attack--to wear sneaky Alyson down. “Amy can fight,” assures Kaley Cuoco on Regis. “if sje catches Hannigan. No way Alyson takes the punch and that right there is enough to put Amy out in front. I just told her not to get too fancy--Alyson’s the veteran--just go right at her and break her down. Hannigan can’t handle the kind of beef Amy’s bringing.” Hannigan in red bandeau bikini, white shoes/socks--Amy in apple-green crop top, baby doll sleeves and laced front, bare midriff, snug full coverage baby-blue trunks and white shoes/socks for a sporty, ballistic look.
During R1: Hannigan as canny as they come--seizes the youngster up, chooses to jump on her while butterflies are still fluttering. Hannigan dispensing with her usual jab--starting Amy off with a robust swinging right on the left eye, sliding back as Davidson stumbles forward and picking her up awestruck the jagged left uppercut. Davidson wobbly biutt, on her heels--Hannigan claps the mouthpiece off the kid’s teeth a clouting hook and Davidson’s moving backward. Mission accomplished Aly--Amy ineffective in retreat--Hanny able to step-with and pepper straight rights and lefts to put Davidson ropeside. Hannigan takes a moment to work the body--right hand at her cheek, pik-pac-pek with that educated left hand, tucking into Amy’s ribs, she’s just crossing her arms and facing bravely into the storm. Hannigan goes for the KO down the stretch, hooks and crosses against Amy’s drowsy face--little redhead digging in plucky and shipping shellack to the bell, Hannigan turning sharply, guns smoking, poor Amy D reeling, busting up and hurt after a “Welcome to the FCBA”-type first.
R2: Shutout Hannigan, here’s the girl everyone expected to see--Alyson a believer in Amy’s chin, steps it outside to work behind the jab, Hannigan a fine hooker off the jab, patting at Amy’s rightside ribs, then occasionally stringing the left uppercut into the sequence to pick up Davidson’s chin. Easy. Ambling footwork from Alyson--straight right hands join the party midway through--it’s a patient, thoroughgoing turkey shoot. Davidson nicely polished, nose bloodied--yet to land a serious punch after 6 long minutes of Hannigan.
R3: Shutout Hannigan, “Hello” left uppercut makes a reappearance, startling Amy, standing her up pretty for clean right hands and forget-me-not hooks. Easy motion to the left Hannigan, hands in a nice relaxed swinging motion as she moves, picking away at Amy like it’s a sparring drill. Davidson turning, crossing her arms, constantly on her heels and unable to find her rhythm--remarkably upbeat as she takes on water during the break.
R4: Amy finally joins the dance--moving her head like she’s practiced, keeping her elbows and hands in close until she’s in range, then exploding out of a bobbing crouch. Hannigan forced to give ground--when she hit’s the ropes, she’s stationary, there for Amy, and Davidson able to show some offensive flair, Amy D nice to the body--good spank off the ribs, bringing the fists back tight to her chest to reload--Hannigan grimacing, dukes up in front of her face--occasionally pressing one hand or the other out to nudge at Amy’s forehead or shoulder. Final moments, Hannigan looks like she’ll ride out the round in good shape when Amy dips left, rips a gorgeous left hook to the body, dips and rips the left uppercut--HANNIGAN’S HURT! Alyson astonished, eyes wide as torso slides wonky on her hips--Hannigan able to tie up around Amy’s head to get to the bell as exuberant Davidson smothers herself accidentally.
R5: Shutout Amy D. Hannigan looking harried, trying to shake Amy with lateral footwork, but Davidson scooting into position, pressing the pace. Davidson much more effective coming forward--hands up to block Hannigan’s hopeful jabs, then shooting back straight rights and lefts, nice rapid stream of blows Leonard Dorin-style, Hannigan can make Amy miss once, then she gets tagged--Davidson’s work rate overhauling the older redhead’s defensive turns and moves.
R6: Hannigan digging in more, forced to slug--Davidson bullying her foe to the ropes and setting a robust pace, Alyson hunched forward, gloves tight at her temples, teeth gritted--she’s just turning on jagged left uppercuts, left hooks head and body, trying to fit her punches in tidy and stay covered up. Amy letting her hands go, working upstairs and down--good splatter-pattern punching and muscular bumping insures she’s the boss in a bitterly contest sixth.
R7: All Amy D--punching Hannigan to the ropes, then squaring away to work her over proper, Poor Alyson covered up tight, grimacing, bending forward, rotating her torso slowly, just riding out the storm, Davidson a little punching machine when there’s nothing coming back--weight on her left foot, hopping on it as she lifts multiple hooks up underneath--splitting the guard with her head, then tuning up Alyson’s waist a sudden burst of slicing lefts and rights. Hannigan’s knees buckle late as sustained Davidson work to the breadbasket takes numbing effect--veteran able to keep her feet with a desperate clinch to the bell.
R8: Amy heaping it on--hounding Alyson to the corners, rooting her out of her defensive stands, walking her down along the ropes. Terrific pursuit slugging--Davidson a little bundle of energy--there’s no punch in the book she won’t throw. Down the stretch, bat-bat left right against Aly’s guard freezes her upright--Davidson able to get 100% Amy behind a withering hook on the liver--Hannigan shouting out in pain and sinking to one knee teeth bared in agony. Amy hopping away like a kid at Christmas: first FCBA knockdown has Davidson grinning ear to ear.
R9: Third straight shutout Amy D--she’s cleaning up on Alyson Hannigan like NOBODY would’ve imagined, Great scrounging pressure--Hannigan trying to slide along the ropes, keeps her dukes up as Davidson gets off ringing punches. Alyson badly worn when shes caught late: Amy with a straight right on the mouth, hook on the chin, hook on the chin and BEEFY hook behind the elbow nearly drops Hannigan to her knees again. Alyson clinching up head and elbow, running the clock--veteran able to survive but no thrive against voracious little newcomer through 9.
R10: Amy perky on her stool, taking on water, nodding animatedly at instructions--she bats her gloves together upon standing and marches out to mop up what’s left. Hannigan pale, shabby from a consistent beating extravagantly applied--she slinks to the perimeter and starts pushing out that don’t-hurt-me jab as Amy walks her down. Midway through, Amy‘s been bouncing her right hand off the side of Alyson’s face--Hannigan finally slips underneath it, and HOOKS AMY’S CROTCH! Davidson groaning, suddenly frozen--Hannigan tugs Davidson behind the head, spins her into the ropes and hooks those baby blue trunks AGAIN for good measure. Davidson sitting in the stands with a stricken expression--Hannigan stands up into uppercuts, arching her back as she snaps a tight left/right off Davidson’s face. Amy without the sense to clinch--lifting her dukes, staring back and ALYSON UNLEASHES! Hannigan not heavy handed, but veteran knows enough to mover her hands with the ref keeping a close watch. Swatting hooks, straight right hands, good clean shots and THE REF STEPS IN! Davidson breaking down in the man’s arms as Hannigan steals victory from the jaws of defeat. TKO10 Alyson Hannigan.
After: Hannigan hurrying to remove her gloves, stone-faced as she rushes from the ring under a howl of boos--veteran digs into the oldest trick-bag in the sport to turn the tables in an energetic young slugger, “Look, she was beating me,” Alyson admits in a locker room interview as HBO chases her down for an explanation. “I had to do what I had to do, You know what matters? I won, she lost. She’s hurting now--I know it--we’ve all been there--but no damn way was I letting her use me as a stepping stone. One day, some fresh-faced little punk will look to use Amy the way she did me, and you know what? She’ll do the exact same thing I did, if she has to.” Amy distraught, fully recovered and tortured by the knowledge she was one minute away from salting away a bruising win only to wind up stopped and heartbroken. Great learning experience for the kid: you get a girl hurting, ready to go--you better take her out,
