Keri Matchett's always been a doughty well rounded performer in the ring - standing with the likes of Lauren Graham as a solid, if unspectacular veteran who still enters the ring expecting to win fights, even though title dreams are a faded memory at this point. What always separated Matchett from the best of the best was power - specifically her lack of fight-winning one-punch KO power. Against Jeri Ryan, Kari would be facing a women who had no more skill, no more pride or fighting spirit, but who possessed arguably the best right hand in boxing and had ridden that hand to the very peak of boxing world in the past. This fight was a perfect example of how and why God-given power can be the difference between champions and opponents in a boxing ring.
Kari fought a sturdy first round - jabbing with Jeri, slipping inside and outworking Ryan to the body with thumping right and left round punches. In the second, Kari continued her good works, punishing Jeri's abdomen, backing the former champ up, and midway through the heat - DROPPING Ryan a stellar left uppercut/right hand on the chin that saw Jeri dusting canvas with her backside. But Ryan would rise, take her 8, and grimly hang on to make it to the bell. In the third, she would see Kari's power, and raise it, ultimately forcing Ms. Matchett to fold.
Landing the short, chopping right hand over Kari's left mitt - Jeri knew she'd won the fight when Matchett's curvy legs stiffened up on the spot. The follow-on hooks - batted in a series against Kari's drowsy face as she toppled backwards - were a mere formality, simply a way of coaxing Matchett to her back. Kari moaned, head lolling sadly side to side, but there was no negotiating with Ryan's stunning shock. One woman was able to get up and go on in this fight - one woman wasn't. It’s the story of Kari Matchett's career in microcosm.
