Boxing story based on a real-life tennis match during the first round of Australian Open held on 15th January 2013 in Melbourne.

Venue: Hisense Arena, Melbourne Park.
Location: Melbourne, Victoria; Australia.

BEFORE: Despite winning both her previous fights against Jelena Jankovic and Daniela Hantuchova the former world #1 Caroline Wozniacki doesn't enter her next contest as runaway favorite. Her form has dropped significantly over the past few months and there's a strong chance for Sabine Lisicki to claim a valuable scalp on the Hisense Arena in Melbourne.

The 23 year old German of Polish origin enjoyed a respectable showing against Maria Sharapova during the Olympics last summer and her agressive approach is destined to cause Wozniacki (likewise of Polish heritage despite being Danish citizen) serious trouble if she can just break through her profound guard. "I will hurt her", claims Sabine before the fight, "She's fought second-tier opposition who couldn't even punch her properly but that will all change tonight. I fully expect to knock her out! We're friends both off the court and off the ring but this is strictly business!"

There's little understanding for those comments by Wozniacki though: "I'm two from two and she got her ass spanked by Sharapova. It's only that infamous Polish, German, whatever mouthing off, but once the action starts she'll be crawling at my feet begging the ref to stop the fight. She won't hurt me at all as everyone knows my defence is the best there ever was! Yeah, we're friends but there are no friends in the ring so go and figure that one out!"

Both girls stand almost at the same height, separated by just half an inch. Caroline Wozniacki wearing a yellow bikini top, white mini-skirt and red gloves. Long blonde hair tied in a loose ponytail. Sabine Lisicki wearing a white bikini top with yellow stripes, yellow mini-skirt and black gloves. Blonde hair tied in a braid.

Round 1:
Wozniacki circles around the ring and doesn't engage in any action at first but Lisicki has other ideas and lashes out at her rival, forcing her to cover up early as single striking over the top indicates the German's vicious intent. Wozniacki easily blocks off that charge though as Sabine's pattern lacks variety and despite her best efforts, she just peppers the leather without any success and eventually jumps back after Caroline slices her on the ribcage with a rare but effective response. More circles from the Dutch girl but Lisicki halts her charge only for a moment, beats the Danish blonde for pace, fakes a low jab and nails Wozniacki on the jaw with a left hook but a subsequent follow-up bites the guard again with Caroline quick to react and make up for the previous error. Sabine barks in anger, swings menacingly around the head but Wozniacki's footwork enables her to move to center of the ring with Lisicki reaching after her with more hooks but to no avail. Caroline counters from the side late in the round, scores a series to the ribs but Sabine lands the final punch as she smacks her foe on the mouth with a quick hook and Wozniacki gives her a long look after the bell with Lisicki skaking her glove in response.

Round 2:
Couple of clean shots in the opening round leave Sabine hungry for more and she jumps out of her stool again, jabbing to the body; catches the forearms before whipping another quick hook to the cheek and gloating over Wozniacki's head snapping back. Right hook follow up misses the target though and Caroline responds with a series to the chest, pummels the rack and leans even further on the German blonde but Lisicki finds a left uppercut on the jaw which breaks through the mitts and leaves Caroline stunned for a moment. Jabbing sequence to the ribs follow and Caroline moans in pain for the first time which only fuels Sabine's anger as she ups the tempo and goes around the elbows, peppers her opponent's midsection for a while before Wozniacki finally forces a clinch with a desperate lunge. Lisicki's footwork was subpar on this occassion and much to her dismay, Wozniacki manages to keep the stalemate for remainder of the round, pushing the German to the ropes and pulling her down in embarrassing fashion.

Round 3:
Either Wozniacki is afraid of Lisicki's one punch prospects or she just wants to wear her out but it's all Sabine again in the third, catching the Dane early with a hooking approach, following up with more jabs to the ribcage. Caroline weaves around on her feet but can't trick her rival into mistimed attacks and Sabine nails her with another left hook over the top, snaps her head back and targets the chest afterwards but Wozniacki's defence comes to her rescue and prevents further damage. Lisicki doesn't let up though, leans on the fellow blonde and goes around the elbows, Caroline scowls in discomfort as she gets pushed to the ropes, tries to duck to the left, right hook catches her on the temple and forces to cover up as Lisicki opens from both flanks, peppers the ribcage, looks to pierce the arms and land some leather on the jugs but she fails in her attempts as Caroline survives the round butt-in-ropes yet standing firm on her feet. Sabine is annoyed at the bell; she knows she's dominated the fight so far but Wozniacki avoided all the heavy leather and looks hardly bruised after three rounds.

Round 4:
Caroline unmoved by her performance, notices Sabine's angry look but goes for the safe approach again while Lisicki jumps at her straight away and continues raining punches but the execution doesn't match the will and most of them crash off the forearms before a switch up high brings little success either with the Danish blonde's guard solid as a rock despite some earlier flaws. Sabine begins to breath a little harder, single strikes to the head but loses her agility advantage and Caroline weaves around her efforts, very light on her feet, forces a brief pause from the German and strikes back immediately, peppers the ribcage and half-uppercuts the rack. Lisicki's eyes throw thunders at the fellow blonde but the feet stay behind and Wozniacki pummels the midsection, leans on the German, ducks under a sky hook and whips a right overhand on the mouth, wobbling the German blonde just before the bell. 'C'mon!', Caroline waves her glove in front of a stunned Sabine and if only looks could kill... But Lisicki just spits out her mouthpiece during the interval instead and is on course to implode over the lack of damage she inflicted on her rival.

Round 5:
Lisicki shows none of the composure she displayed when forcing Maria Sharapova the distance back in August and squares up to Wozniacki straight after the bell, throws a double hooking combo to the face but slices the air in wake of Wozniacki's deke, loses her balance, bends forward and Caroline counters from the side; spikes couple of straight jabs over the top, nails the German on the mouth and buries a solid hook in her guts moments later. Sabine moans in pain, looks to force a clinch, but Wozniacki moves a step back, throws a bif left hook on the temple and finds the target. Lisicki's head snaps back and she covers up in no time with Caroline jabbing to the chest and pushing her for back to the ropes. Sudden change of fortunes with the Danish blonde raging along the ropes and whipping leather to the body. Lisicki leans back on the ropes, misses a hooking reponse and gets nailed on the mouth again as a quick hook from Caroline pierces the mitts without much trouble. Sabine's defence shows no match to her opponent's and Wozniacki grits her teeth even further, catches the German on the ribcage again before the bell and Sabine just turns away to her corner immediately after the bell with Caroline glancing over with a cheeky smile on her face.

Round 6:
Sabine breaths heavily during the interval and drops her agressive approach for the first time tonight. However it's Caroline who comes out swinging instead as she forces the German into a chaotic dance around the ropes. Lisicki's stamina visibly inferior at half-distance and the wearing out process continues with Wozniacki looking as fresh as five rounds ago, keeps her opponent on her toes with big hooks around the head while Lisicki just wants to catch some respite but her breasts go up and down as she remains on the back foot but avoiding real trouble until the final minute when she drops her arms and goes for a bit of teasing only to see Wozniacki slam her with a single overhand on the nose and stumble to the side. Sabine bends forward, notices the fellow blonde going down on her like an eagle but she fails to raise her arms in time and gets tagged from both flanks on each cheek, stumbles back to the ropes and gets pinned there with a vicious jab to the guts. Sabine moans in pain, sinks on her knees, eats more leather on the ribs and eventually gets saved by the bell with Wozniacki shaking her glove in front of her eyes again.

Round 7:
Lisicki's affected by the previous couple of rounds and looks to bide more time but Wozniacki walks her down and keeps under pressure with more jabs to the body. She flicks couple of hooks on the head and wobbles the German who is leaking energy with every second now. No sudden rash from the Danish blonde though as she whoops more leather on the head, splits the mitts and bounces off Sabine's nose whose eyes get bigger and bigger with every punch landing on her face. Caroline switches targets and launches a body attack, goes around the elbows and catches the ribs before throwing an uppercut on the jaw and making poor Lisicki moan in pain again. Sabine retreats but gets trapped along the ropes with Caroline working the single hand, catching her on the cheek and giving a solid shot on the liver which lands just too high to deck the cumbersome German on the spot. Wozniacki goes for a repeat, skims off the elbows and gets tagged by a hooking response on the mouth as Sabine tries to stage a comeback, launches herself off the ropes but misses the follow up and gets whacked on the rack instead, falls back on the ropes by the bell sounds moments later and ref drags the Danish blonde away before she can inflict more damage on the German blonde.

Round 8:
Wozniacki with a jabbing combo to the midsection early, beats Lisicki for pace and tries to send another uppercut on the jaw but the German covers up well albeit cannot take the swing away from her rival who peppers her guard from mid-range and breaks through the mitts on couple of occassions snapping Sabine's head back. The ammount of punches begins to take it's toll on the German who develops few bruises on her otherwise pretty face, yet Wozniacki doesn't seek the haymaker put away with her opponent visibly struggling for breath. Single overhands cause enough trouble as Lisicki crashes off the forearms herself, misses the low jabs with Caroline dancing around and wearing her out even further instead. Sabine with a desperate lunge in the final minute, bounces off the guard again and eats a counter right hook on the nose which relieves her of any agression while Caroline works her guts over along the ropes sporting a cheeky smile and clearly enjoying punching Sabine's tummy into a mush.

Round 9:
Lisicki slow off her stool, fails to fend off a quick charge from Caroline who looks like she can fight for another ten rounds as she whips an overhand left on the cheek, follows up with a right on the stomach which forces a wincing German to bend forward and fall victim of a huge uppercut on the jaw which sends her spinning back to the ropes! Wozniacki pours in with a jabbing series to the chest, Lisicki raises her arms and covers the face but Wozniacki hammers her ribs with no sympathy whatsoever and Sabine sinks on her knees quickly, bends to the side, gets nailed on the liver area and once again just inches away from success as Lisicki manages to stay upright.... not for long... Couple of hammer fists against the ribcage from the left, right hand on the navel and Sabine can't take the onslaught anymore as SHE CRASHES DOWN ON HER KNEES wrapping her arms around the tummy and looking physically at her limits. "C'mon!", another glove shaking from the Danish blonde who stares at the fallen opponent with visible disdain but Lisicki refuses to quit. Despite a primal pain in her guts, she beats the count at seven albeit with gloomy eyes and it's a case of mind over matter rather than anything else. Wozniacki amused at the fellow blonde's efforts, spikes her immediately after the command, gives her couple of more lumps under the eye while shattering her guard but the bell comes to Lisicki's rescue as Caroline seemingly took too much time in finishing her off and reverted into some low jabbing which crashed off the arms and brought no success. At the bell Wozniacki looks angry for the first time tonight and she really hopes for that knockdown according to most of the observers.

Round 10:
Sabine in panic mode, leaps around the ring just hoping to survive this gruesome contest and doesn't engage in any late KO efforts with Caroline clearly in better physical shape and ready to pounce on a counter haymaker herself. Rush of blood to the head fails to bring her success though as she misses an initial approach, allows Sabine to whack her on the ribs, ducks under a follow up hook and finally clinch in the middle of the ring. Referee lethargic in taking action, leaves the two blondes to settle this one among themselves and as Wozniacki tries to land some shots on the ribs, Sabine screams out in anger, shoves the Danish foe to the ropes herself and slams her on the back of her head, now seemingly unable to think of any other tactics. Caroline's angry over this rabbit shot but ref turns a blind eye anyway! Lisicki pours in with ribcage shots in the clinch, shoves Wozniacki to the corner post, blocks her right arm and hammers the tummy as Caroline tries to headbutt her instead and she indeed whacks the German on the brow ridge just before the two minute mark. Couple of hellcats locked together along the corner post look to dwarf each other mentally and Lisicki's guard pulling proves too difficult for Wozniacki to cope with. But Sabine launches a last-ditch charge; presses her opponent against the corner post, unties her arm from underneath Caroline's elbow and jumps back. Wozniacki's too slow to react for once and walks onto a right overhand on the nose which busts her nostrils on the spot and sends back against the corner post. Sabine's cut loose now with Wozniacki hurting and unable to fight back; ferocious pounding from the aching German who lands body shots all over the Danish opponent but runs out of time to send her down and possibly knock her out in the proccess. Standing ovation for both girls at the bell but Sabine is annoyed, drops to her knees and starts banging her gloves against the canvas with Caroline shocked upon the final minute, stares at her red gloves which display crimson stains and her cutmen are quick to adress the busted up nose. Suddenly there's a dose of uncertainty in the Dane's corner but bloody nose or not, comes back 96-94 and winner through UD10 Caroline Wozniacki!!!

AFTER: Lisicki's livid with herself after that performance, has her gloves removed quickly and storms out of the Hisense Arena ignoring the members of the media. Just as she's about to enter the locker room tunnel she turns back and gives her opponent one last look: "Ty krowo! You owe me one after that!" But Caroline didn't catch that last reponse and after having a couple of tampons placed in her nostrils she even offers the crowd a broad smile which is met by even a bigger applause. "That got a little too hot towards the finish and I wish Sabine didn't get so personal before the fight in first place. It's the start of new year, I won some fights before while she hasn't and that obviously played on her mind. When she cools off we'll be friends again. After all, there's nothing so complicated and serious which cannot be solved with a bottle of... bottle of... Evian!! Excuse me now but I hear that Rory's on the phone. He couldn't be here with me but they do get ESPN back in Europe as well! (...) No, I don't drink Irish Dew! Thank you for your time and see you all soon."

AFTER-PARTY: Couple of ESPN journalists spotted both Caroline and Sabine working together on a bottle of a water-clear liquid later that night in a nearby club but were blocked off by the security crew before they could investigate further. They left the club assured that was just a bottle of Evian and not some Polish vodka which was widely rumoured around the Melbourne Park locker room the following morning.

Final result: Caroline Wozniacki def. Sabine Lisicki UD10.
