EMMANUELLE VAUGIER VS LAURA VANDERVOORT
Using a stiff up-jab combined with a drilling short right, Laura V was able to fight from entrenched positions, picking an aggressive Vaugier apart on approach. It wasn't easy - both women tasted canvas and were hurt on several occasions, but in the end, Laura's will prevailed as she battered a cowering Emmanuelle into a TKO5 stupor.
The win puts Laura at 43 fights in total (25-16-2) and increases her bantam winning streak to 7 consecutive victories. Wins over the likes of Vaugier, Park and Scherzinger brand Laura as one of the pre-eminent "exotic assassins" in the FCBA, making the challenge of current bantam champ CARMELLA DECESARE an almost forgone conclusion. At 35-15-1, Decesare's record is comparable, and if the fight were made, it would represent a rematch of the memorable 2008 bout in which Carmella stopped Laura via TKO8 verdict.
JENNA DEWAN VS KAT GRAHAM
This battle would pit dancer against dancer in a fight that saw both women as hungry for attention as they were for victory. Classy and fast-paced - the bouncing beauties darted in and out with a display of high-volume razzle-dazzle punching, but in the 8th, vicious Kat-Graham body blows would earn her the TKO. Dewan's people weren't happy with the refereeing: crippled by a well-placed hook to the breadbasket, Jenna was clearly helpless - so much so that Graham actually checked her own right hand to allow the ref to step in. He didn't, so Kat did her job, administering several more withering body wallops against no resistance whatsoever, until the somewhat bloodthirsty official was satisfied.
EMILY VANCAMP VS ASHLEY MADEKWE
This fight would be the hotly contested - and highly anticipated - rematch to the stunning KO3 upset scored by Madekwe earlier in the year. Following that fight, Ashley claimed to have usurped Emily's Alpha status on "Revenge", and many pundits believed her bendy/whippy unorthodox approach had created a bit of an Emily-busting blueprint. Over 10 grueling rounds of hard-nosed, angular boxing, Vancamp answered her critics - and answered - with cold-eyed ferocity.
After a quick start from an aggressive Ashley, Vancamp would settle in to chisel out a masterpiece of technically sound boxing, paying particular attention to Madekwe's beautiful face (ie: "whittling at the pretty"). Though a terrible thrashing in terms of punishment received, many onlookers actually came away impressed with the level of "compete" shown by Madekwe. Beaten, she remains defiant, and looks to be digging in as a long-term threat to classy Ms. Vancamp.
TROIAN BELLISARIO VS NINA DOBREV
In what may prove to be the first shot fired in a long, sustained war for type-supremacy between these two, Troian Bellisario shocked the crowd, her opponent and possibly herself with an up-tempo, one-sided boxing attack that would punch Nina D to sleep by the 7th round.
It was immediately clear from the outset that Dobrev - the presumed favourite - had no respect for her foe's power or ability, stalking Troian with the intent of slugging her into submission. Bellisario employed intelligent high-octane boxing and rapidly began to run up the score, winning minute after minute on the cards while her stubborn foe refused to adjust. Dobrev would be rewarded on occasion - dropping Troian once and hurting her in spots - but Bellisario proved as resilient as she was skillful, always answering back and keeping the balance of trade in her favour. A classy win was marred at the end when Nina - helpless and sitting on the bottom rope - was technically "down" when Troian swept several lapping "insurance" rights and lefts across Dobrev's groggy face to salt away the KO7. With a Vampi D/PLP showdown on the horizon, those cheap, uncalled for, and unsportsmanlike punches won't be forgotten.
MICHELLE BORTH VS AJ COOK
A slim, brawny-looking AJ Cook would win her first fight of 2013 over the talented and gorgeous Michelle Borth, in one of the best blonde/brunette pairings television has to offer. It wasn't easy - the see-saw fighting saw both women hurt and spellbound from punishment at times before Cook's 9th round knockdown of Borth paved the way for a tasty clean-up stoppage (KO9). Cook emerges as an overlooked threat at bantam - very cute, blonde, and hard-punching...her next fight may well be against CBAD stalwart Carla Gugino in a battle that has fight-of-the-year potential if both girls bring their chins as well as their fists to the fray. |
