BEFORE: "Nothing but respect for Ali," Torv drawls in Aussie accent. "She's one of the fittest girls in boxing - a hard woman and a dangerous opponent. She's a little under-gunned, I think, for me. I'm bigger; I'm heavy in the clinch or on top at the ropes...I think it'll weigh on her as rounds go by. I'm looking forward to the challenge: Ali's a quality fighter and I'll need to be sharp to beat her!"
Larter the more acerbic of the two, but generally cordial in a respectful pre-fight. "Torv's answered a lot of questions we all had about her over the last year or so," Ali analyses at podium. "Was the toughness really there? She's a big lightweight, but she used to fight small; she collapsed against Arterton's power in their fight and didn't show much spunk about getting a rematch; she's been put in soft at times...we all wondered if Anna had a real fighting heart, you know? But I'd say those doubts have been erased. She's shown the ability to dig in and scrap out tough wins; she's taken punishment that would have left other girls wilting...she's coming into her own. I'll beat her because I'm better, but I'm not expecting to bulldoze right through her. I know I'll take a few deep breaths before I shut her down."
Larter in black bikini; black gloves; blonde hair in loose beach curls. Anna in dark brown bikini top; pale blue sport bottoms with pastel pink floral print; white gloves; long blonde hair in slick low pony.
During R1: Girls slap left hands midring, circle counter-clockwise, then range-in. Torv hooks Larter's solid breadbasket; Ali responds straight one-two as Anna issues check-right-uppercut in retreat. Fighters separate to circle - Larter stooping to spit jabs at Anna's body; Torv with dukes up/elbows in to block. That's the gist: smart, patient tactical work from both - crisp punching in spots, punctuated by circular maneuvering. Torv's jab dominates the final minute, keeping Larter bobbing-and-blocking, securing points for Anna.
R2: Anna ranging in with the jab, stepping in strong on front (left) leg to swing that thudding hook wide behind Larter's right elbow. Larter immediately answering via choppy left/rights up the middle, but Torv jabbing into the storm, sliding back in-stance to walk Larter into right hands/check hooks. Same tactical feel - women taking calculated risks to get at one another, then breaking off to circle. One constant throughout is Torv's heavy, swinging, low-slung hook to Ali's waist or flank-rib: it's the one punch Anna's looking to get on a consistent basis.
R3: Larter more aggressive - penetrating up the middle via walking barrages of straight left/rights...Torv backpedaling, then loping to either side - looking to renegotiate with her jab outside. Ali scattering Torv in a series of first-minute attacks - Larter increasingly brazen, but at the 1:00 mark...Ali walks into a well-timed check-hook to chin that changes everything. Larter staring - back (right) foot slides forward out of position...she's badly hurt, torso sloshing on her hips as she lifts hands to earmuff. Torv steps in on left (front) leg, slinging that thumping hook behind Larter's right elbow once, twice; dipping low to put left shoulder into Larter's stooping guard, levering her up and backwards. More whacking hooks to the body cramp Ali up, then Torv chops a vicious right to Larter's left flank, sending tremors down Ali's legs. Grimacing Larter retreats to ropes, setting up a bobbing pocket...Torv wades in all hard-eyed, cold-blooded. OH THOSE SWINGING HOOKS! Torv just burying left hands in Larter's toned chassis, then stooping to get left shoulder underneath, propping Ali up into ropes. Torv's right hand held responsibly alongside her chin...she's deploying it either to push or chop sidearm at Larter's left hip - resetting balance for the issuance of more withering hooks. Poor Larter! Muscular legs holding her up, but she's crippled, unable to punch back...Torv just bumping Larter upright with the shoulder, then slaughtering her amidships...gruesome, one-sided work with 2 minutes on the clock. Push n' punch, push n' punch...Torv just belting away methodical - useless ref apparently mesmerized by the astonishing punishment Larter's absorbing, but eventually it's all too much. Larter cringing, jack-knifing into canvas with arms hugging ravaged body...she lies on her left side, eyes clamped shut, lips curled off her teeth...Torv stalks away without a backward glance at her KO3 victim.
After: Torv with harsh words for the ref before stablemates usher her away...she's equal parts jubilant and angry in postfight. "You know...obviously it's great to have Ali Larter helpless at your feet," Anna says in postfight, "but that wasn't necessary. I feel like the ref should have stopped that much, much sooner...there was no reason for me to batter her like that, for that long. But whatever - it WAS Ali Larter so presumably the official was giving her every chance to come back, but I had her crippled to the body...there was no way she could respond to what I was doing. It's a great result...I'm aiming for type-dominance and lightweight titles, and I think I took a strong step forward on both accounts tonight, but still. I don't want to permanently ruin anybody on my march to the top!" |
