BEFORE:
"Well, I guess I'm not an underdog anymore," says a smiling Jennifer. "It's a 50/50 fight this time. That's what they're saying. Maybe after I beat Scherzinger, I might actually be FAVORED next time out."
"All I keep hearing about is Jen this and Jen that," says Nicole, without a trace of a smile. "Well, there are TWO fighters climbing into the ring tonight, and the one who walks out the winner is NOT going to be named 'Jen'."
ROUND ONE:
O'Dell: "Getting ready for the fifth of six bouts tonight and that's 'Don't Cha' blasting through the arena, and here comes the lady whose voice you hear, 'The Hawaiian Hammer', Nicole Scherzinger..."
McCarthy: "Don't says 'lady' and the Original Dancing Hooker's name in the same sentence!"
O'Dell: "Scherzinger into the ring, helped off with the robe by Jewel and Britney to reveal that pink and gray number she's favored lately..."
Tess: "And the crowd favors that body the bikini is showing off..."
McCarthy: "OVERrated, just like the Dancing Hooker herself!"
O'Dell: "And that's 'Too Bad About Your Girl' by The Donnas, and that can only mean the lovely Jennifer Morrison is on her way to the ring..."
McCarthy: "Morrison represents my favorite stable, other than Sceej, of course, IFFI, which is currently 7-3 against the Weirdo and his Dancing Hookers!"
Tess: "Sceej (cough cough) 1-2 (cough cough)"
McCarthy: "We should be 3-0! I WAS ROBBED TWICE! ROBBED!"
O'Dell(sighing): "Jen getting the honors tonight based on her two-fight winning streak over Front Street..."
McCarthy: "And when she knocks out ScherzingHooker, maybe Weirdo will give her a shot at Toothpick Park, the so-called bantamweight champion!"
Tess: "She's not the 'so-called' champion. She IS the champion..."
McCarthy: "Only because DeCesare spit the bit! She's a disgrace to the Mansion, coughing up the title to PARK..."
Tess: "Who now has as many career titles as 'The Greatest Fighting Playmate Of All Time'..."
McCarthy: "SHUT IT, WALMART!"
O'Dell: "Drink up boys and drink up the scene in the ring, as Morrison is helped off with the robe by the IFFI corner to reveal a white number that she fills out very well. And, we're about ready to go, and I don't suppose I have to ask about picks. Tess on record as favoring Scherzinger and Mac's made it pretty clear..."
McCarthy: "Morrison by KO! IFFI goes up 8-3 on the Weirdo! I LOVE those guys!"
O'Dell: "The ladies disagree. Let's see who's right. Nicole quickly circling Jen off the bell, snapping out a jab, dropping a right, ducking a counter...TOUCHING MORRISON UP WITH A THREE-PUNCH!"
Tess: "Jen felt all three of those..."
O'Dell: "And that right hand...and THAT ONE! Scherzinger is ringing the blonde up with that speed. Snapping the head, beating the blonde to the punch. Lighting her up like Zab Judah on a ham sandwich..."
McCarthy: "If Walmart were around, Judah would be punching air, because she'd already have EATEN the ham sandwich..."
O'Dell: "Morrison eats a right. Another. Oh, a wicked one-two and Jen wobbled!"
Tess: "Morrison's looking discombobulated. First time we've seen that in her Asylum fights. Having trouble with the speed..."
O'Dell: "Jen short and late on everything. Nicole rocks her AGAIN...solid combination. Morrison covering up...AND DOWN SHE GOES! Scherzinger with a lighting right cross and Morrison dropped to her rump."
Tess: "This is what makes Nicole so dangerous. That speed can get you at any time from any place with either hand."
O'Dell: "Count is at four. Five. Six. Morrison to her feet. A bit unsteady as she takes the mandatory. Referee going to let it continue. Nicole right back to work, SHELLING Jen with a flurry that backs her up and sends sweat flying! Morrison again covering up, eats a right and there's the bell! A HUGE first for Nicole!"
Tess: "Third straight where we've had a 10-8 first. Good start for Nicky."
ROUND TWO:
O'Dell: "Into the second now and Nicole snapping jabs and circling. Jen with the hands high, looking to cut and counter..."
McCarthy: "She's made an adjustment, Jenny. Those hands higher, the head a little lower, giving Scherzinger less of a target. A lot of those jabs and follow up rights are finding glove and shoulder..."
O'Dell: "And Morrison's having success countering. Not landing anything heavy, but she's scoring..."
McCarthy: "Cutting the ring pretty well, too..."
Tess: "Are you ladies as impressed with what Jen's doing as I am? I mean, shellshocked, hurt, but she's showing a TON of poise here..."
O'Dell: "No question. Stabilizing her front with these tactics which are clearly designed to somewhat neutralize Nicole's speed. Jen not trying to do too much, and she's not getting anything major done. What she IS doing is slowing things down and getting into positions where she can score."
McCarthy: "And prevent Scherzinger from scoring..."
O'Dell: "Nicole continuing to circle. Snap that left. She's landing a few, but those rights aren't finding anything but leather, and Morrison effective in counter. Picking her spots and making the punches count to the bell. "
McCarthy: "Jen's round."
Tess: "And she's cut the lead in half. 19-18 after two."
ROUND THREE:
O'Dell: "Third begins with Morrison continuing to work out of a high guard, allowing Nicole to fight lead, content to counter and cut the ring. Very effective execution here from Jen..."
McCarthy: "She's smart in there, Jenny. Came out looking to go offense like she did against Mack and Pink and got in trouble because of the speed. So, she's adjusted. Going to play 'D' and slow the fight down."
O'Dell: "Jen technically VERY solid. Lots of head and foot movement, patient, waiting for openings and landing...AND THERE'S A RIGHT HAND NICOLE OUT OF NOWHERE! Morrison staggered..."
Tess: "We're going to need replay to figure out where that CAME from..."
O'Dell: "From Barnum and Bailey...AND THERE'S ANOTHER RIGHT HAND! Morrison wobbled, covering up, and Nicole going body, playing Rocky and casting Jen's midsection and ribs in the role of the MEAT..."
Tess: "Jen hanging on trying to run clock.!"
O'Dell: "Backed into the ropes, keeping the guard high, shipping the body punishment as a result. This round has turned on a dime."
Tess: "Jen needs the bell. She's in deep trouble."
O'Dell: "And she's going to get it. The final seconds tick off and Morrison survives...but Nicole grabbed that round late!"
Tess: "Check the replay of that first right hand. Nicole snaps out a jab off her right foot. Jen fires a right hand counter, and Nicole leans back and away to her right then LEAPS forward off the right foot to land a half hook/half uppercut to the cheek. The second one is just as crazy. Nicole throws a straight left, Jen leans left away from it, and Nicky springs, again off her back foot, twists her body in midair, and BANGS the right home just as her right foot is landing. Not sure how you defend something like that."
McCarthy: "Best way is to get her out of there."
O'Dell: "Jen needs to figure something out, because Nicole's back up two, 29-27."
ROUND FOUR:
O'Dell: "Fourth round begins with Jen still holding the hands high and working forward. Working hard to cut the ring and pin Nicole down..."
McCarthy: "No panic from Morrison. She's been lit up in two of three rounds, but she continuing to work the fight plan."
O'Dell: "Nicole wants to jab and circle, stay in open canvas where she can use that speed. Plenty busy as she has been the entire fight, but, again, a lot of it catching glove and shoulder as Jen makes with the defense and uses any openings to counter..."
McCarthy: "Punch stat's going to tell a tale after this one. Scherzinger's throwing twice as many punches as Morrison, but Jen's still landing more than Nicole. Using the counter and getting off in combination when she can cut Nicole off..."
O'Dell: "Not able to do it all that frequently, but, again, when she does, she's making it count. Not trying to do too much. Taking what's there. And it's working as the final seconds of the fourth tick away."
McCarthy: "And for the second time, Morrison responds to a big round from Scherzinger by stabilizing her front and winning a point back."
Tess: "38-37. Good fight through four."
ROUND FIVE:
O'Dell: "Fifth round begins with a bit more aggression from Morrison. Jen still looking to cut, but not just countering now. She's looking to go on the offensive, wants to force engagement, but Nicole's having none of it, legging away, circling, staying in open waters."
McCarthy: "The Dancing Hooker NEVER wants to actually stand and fight."
O'Dell: "Jen not discouraged, though. Keeps working hard to bring Nicole to battle. Scherzinger popping jabs off her back foot, circling, maintaining distance. Jen able to cut occasionally, and, when she does, she gets off and scores, but Nicole quickly slips away before any major exchanges can occur."
Tess: "You can't blame Nicky for not wanting to stand and trade, but she's got to get busier. Too much legging and not enough punching this round."
O'Dell: "I suspect that's what's she's going to hear from Jewel and Britney between rounds, and that starts right now. There's the bell ending the fifth, and Morrison's evened this up."
Tess: "47-47 at the halfway point."
ROUND SIX:
O'Dell: "We're into the second half of this one, and Nicole again popping and circling. Jen with the hands high, using the feet, looking to cut off the ring. Jen always closer to the center, Nicole on the outside looking to work the perimeter."
McCarthy: "Morrison's getting the tempo she wants. She's slowing things down, pressuring, not allowing Nicole to get set and throw in combination."
O'Dell: "Nicole maybe being a little too cute and defensive right now. She's making it hard on Jen to locate and score, but Nicky's not doing much scoring herself."
Tess: "Got to wonder if this is part of the fight plan, considering what Morrison did against Mack and Pink."
O'Dell: "Could be, giving up some rounds to lengthen the fight, maybe wear Jen down some. But Morrison, as Mac points out, is very smart in there. Not burning energy. Working efficiently. Scoring points. Taking what she's given."
McCarthy: "Out-thinking Scherzinger and The Weirdo's overrated training staff. No offense to Jen, but that's not hard to do!"
O'Dell: "Closing moments of the sixth, and Morrison smooth and solid pitching the shutout to the bell. She's made up for the early knockdown and has the lead."
Tess: "57-56, and she's won four of the six rounds. Anyone who thought Mack and Pink might be flukes has to be changing their tune. Jen's impressing again."
ROUND SEVEN:
O'Dell: "Seventh stanza begins with the familiar terms, Nicole circling, Jen looking to cut the ring and bring Scherzinger to battle. Nicky busier now, stopping, popping, slipping a return, landing a flurry that forces Jen to cover up, then legging away for a reset."
Tess: "This is more effective stuff from Nicole. Using the speed to score, not just to avoid punches. She's keeping the engagements short, but getting work done when they occur."
O'Dell: "Morrison resolute. Continuing to work to cut the ring, but not having much success. Scherzinger finding the range better than she has in any round since the first. Getting off quick flurries and not waiting around for the response."
Tess: "Nicky's landed a lot of good right hands in this round. She's stopping Jen in her tracks with clean leather, and Morrison isn't able to respond quickly enough. This is the speed advantage writ large."
McCarthy: "Amazingly, you just made a good point, Walmart. Morrison has developed into a well-rounded fighter. She's smart. Very well conditioned. Doesn't have one huge weapon, but she's solid in all aspects. And the one thing a girl like that can have a problem with is speed. And, again, the best way to deal with that is to take the opponent out of there."
O'Dell: "But, Jen's got to find her first, and right now, that's not happening. Nicole just too quick and slick. Morrison short or late on everything while Scherzinger lands speed combinations to the bell and responds to a shutout with one of her own."
Tess: "We've had some good fights tonight, and this may be the best yet. 66-66 through seven."
ROUND EIGHT:
O'Dell: "Bell sounds to start the eighth and a spirited exchange right off the bell! Both women landing clean stuff in that one! Scherzinger circles away, waits for Jen to move in with that high guard and lands a two-punch. Morrison counters with a left right of her own! Scherzinger fires back and Jen responds and we've got some hot and heavy action!"
McCarthy: "Coming down the stretch in a close fight. Both girls know they can win this thing and they're turning up the heat."
O'Dell: "Morrison trying to force the action as usual and Nicole much more willing to play along this time, willing to stand in and prolong the exchanges."
McCarthy: "Advantage: Morrison if this keeps up..."
O'Dell: "RIGHT HAND, NICKY! SCHERZINGER STAGGERS JEN WITH A STRAIGHT RIGHT!"
Tess: "Speed kills."
O'Dell: "And Scherzinger going to work! Jen wobbled with a right hook. Nicole pot-shotting with the left. Morrison in a high guard, giving ground back to the ropes and Nicole goes body again. Jen tying up, wrestling along the ropes. Scherzinger shoves free and lands a nasty three-punch at the bell!"
Tess: "All even at four rounds apiece, but Nicky's up 76-75 courtesy of that first round knockdown."
ROUND NINE:
O'Dell: "Two rounds to go and it's anyone's fight. Scherzinger back on her bicycle. Morrison giving chase. Good exchange and Nicky slips away to the left. Stops. Waits for Jen, lands a two punch...AND MORRISON DROPS HER WITH A RIGHT HAND COUNTER!"
McCarthy: "THAT'S the one Jen's been looking for!"
O'Dell: "Morrison to a neutral corner. Referee's count at four. Five. Six. Seven. Nicole to her feet at eight. Referee gives her the mandatory. Going to let it continue. And Jen's going to WORK."
McCarthy: "And the Original Dancing Hooker getting some of what Pink and Mack The Phony got! Jen showing that killer instinct, all in, forcing Scherzinger into the ropes and laying the beat down!"
O'Dell: "And now it's Morrison working the body to bring down Nicole's guard. Scherzinger clinching, holding in a reversal of last round...."
McCarthy: "The difference is, Jen has a lot more time left."
O'Dell: "And she's taking full advantage, snapping back Nicole's head with a right uppercut, slamming a straight left between the gloves. Buffeting the head with hooks banging off Scherzinger's gloves."
McCarthy: "Jen working those ribs, then back upstairs with a good right hand! How much more of this is the referee going to allow?"
O'Dell: "Thirty seconds left. Nicole hanging on grimly. Jen turning up the pressure to eleven. Tossing everything but the kitchen sink at Nicole. Scherzinger showing a TON of heart, hanging on. Referee looking in closely. Jen sends sweat FLYING with a right hand and there's the bell!"
Tess: "Nicole survives, but that 10-8 puts Jen ahead 85-84 with just one round to go."
ROUND TEN:
O'Dell: "The tenth and final is underway and Morrison pressuring Nicole. Scherzinger seems to have the legs back, moving pretty well. Jabbing off the back foot, keeping to the open range. Jen willing to work carefully to cut the ring, finding the range with some quick flurries when she does so before Nicole can skip away."
McCarthy: "Morrison's got the Dancing Hooker spooked!"
O'Dell: "Nicole using the legs as much in this round as she has all night. Jen patient. Stalking. Landing when she gets in position. Nicole content to stick and move..."
McCarthy: "Just looking to survive, not win the fight..."
O'Dell: "RIGHT HAND, NICKY!"
Tess: "That came from her HIP!"
O'Dell: "And Morrison is ROCKED! And now it's Scherzinger all in...SENDS JEN STUMBLING BACK WITH A STRAIGHT RIGHT..."
Tess: "Nicole doesn't need a stoppage! If Morrison's knee touches the mat..."
O'Dell: "And Nicole is all about making that happen. She's getting off with both hands! Jen backed into the ropes and Nicole hammering away in the final minute."
Tess: "Jen keeping the hands high, doing enough to keep the ref at bay, hanging on just like Nicky did in the last round..."
O'Dell: "Nicole ignoring the body. Head hunting. Looking for one more big one. ANOTHER GOOD RIGHT SNAPS JEN'S HEAD BACK! Morrison clinching, holding Nicole's arms. Nicky punching free, lands an uppercut. Final seconds. Bell! Bell! It's over."
Tess: "We'll have to see what the judges think, but my card has this even at 94."
O'Dell: "There's never been a draw at Asylum. We'll have to see what the judges say. Results being announced, and it is, indeed, all even after ten. And the ref doesn't even have to ASK Morrison, who waives Scherzinger forward! And Nicole nodding in response. We're going overtime at the Asylum!"
ROUND ELEVEN:
O'Dell: "Eleventh round underway, and, as Nicole circles popping the jab and Jen pursues with hands high, we'll recap the overtime rules. The first woman to score two consecutive points wins it. A 10-8 round is enough to do it, as is a victory in two straight rounds. You don't have to win BY two, you just need two straight points."
McCarthy: "Morrison cutting the ring off and landing a flurry..."
O'Dell: "AND NICOLE STAGGERS HER WITH A RIGHT HOOK! MORRISON WOBBLED AND NICKY GOING TO WORK..."
Tess: "Again, a 10-8 round is enough. If Jen's knee touches the canvas..."
O'Dell: "And her legs do another shimmy off a quick left hook. Morrison not covering up. Trying to fire back, but Nicole all over her...WOBBLES THE KNEES AGAIN..."
Tess: "Right hand from CLEVELAND! No idea how Jen took that and is still standing!"
O'Dell: "Morrison finally going over to the defensive. Backed into the ropes with the guard up high. Nicole banging away upstairs, forgetting all about the body now. Trying to get that elusive finisher both girls have been so close to tonight."
McCarthy: "Morrison playing this smart. Got to survive the round. Let next round take care of itself..."
O'Dell: "NICOLE WITH A LEFT RIGHT THAT HURT JEN AGAIN! MORRISON IN DEEP TROUBLE..."
Tess: "No idea what's holding her up..."
O'Dell: "If you figure it out, tell Nicole, because she's asking the same question. Scherzinger POURING it on down the stretch, but Jen hangs on to the bell."
Tess: "Judges, of course, will reveal their scorecards, but there's no question. Nicole gets the round and wins this fight if she can get the next one."
O'Dell: "Jen managed to make sure there IS a next one, but it may be academic. Morrison looking pretty shabby at this point."
ROUND TWELVE:
O'Dell: "The twelfth begins with another Scherzinger flurry! Nicole landing some clean shot, backing Jen up a step. Morrison trying to fire back, GETS LIT UP AGAIN!"
Tess: "No quit in Morrison, but Nicky controlling the exchanges now..."
McCarthy: "Jen has to keep going after her, though. Nothing to lose..."
O'Dell: "Nicole with another clean right. ANOTHER! Jen defintely hurting, but still game, still swinging back."
McCarthy: "Morrison looking for one big punch. That's all it takes for her to win it. Like Walmart said earlier, all that has to happen is Nicole's knee touching the canvas."
O'Dell: "Morrison flurries, Nicole answers back with a clean left-right and circles away. Scherzinger resets, double-taps the jab as Jen moves in. Morrison lands a left and hooks the body, but Nicole fires back with a combination."
Tess: "Nicky's speed telling on Jen right now."
O'Dell: "But Morrison far from giving up. Gritty, determined, working through the final minute. Landing a good right hand. Scherzinger on her bicycle. The crowd on its feet. Nicole circling, stopping, reversing, not doing any engaging. She's going to leg out the final seconds, confident that she's won this thing in overtime..."
Tess: "If she HAS, it's huge. The way Jen fought tonight, this fight is a win for her either way. She's proven she's for real, a contender at bantam. Nicole needs the result. She's been out of the picture a long time, buried behind four fighters at Front Street, but, if she survives these final seconds and the judges see this round like I do, she's just become Front Street's stopper, the girl who stopped Morrison's romp through the stable, and if Jen's a contender, and she IS, then so is Nicky..."
O'Dell: "Final seconds tick away and Nicole throws the hands in the air. She thinks she's won this thing. Morrison may not agree, shaking her head as she heads back to her corner. We await the judges, holding up the scorecards...and it IS over! Nicole Scherzinger wins Round 12 and claims the fight by UD12...and gets a hug from close friend Britney Spears in the Front Street corner..."
Tess: "Jen Morrison over to touch 'em up with Nicole. Class all the way, and, again, Jen may not have gotten the result tonight, but she's clearly broken through with what we've seen her do at Asylum these last few months."
AFTER:
O'Dell: "Let's go up to the ring and Tess Valmore!"
Tess: "I have our winner, Nicole Scherzinger, and, Nicky, huge night..."
Nicole(still a bit out of breath): "She's tough, Tess. And she's good. As good as anyone I've fought. But this was going to be MY night. Always. I had a job to do tonight. A job my management hand picked me to do. Failure was never an option."
Tess: "Are you back?"
Nicole: "I never went away. I'm one of the best bantams in the world, just like I have been for the past three years. I'm the girl who killed Pam Anderson's comeback in the cradle, the girl who humiliated Alba, the girl who stepped up to play stopper against Jen Morrison. I'm what I've always been, a girl who can beat anyone in this division." |
