TESS VALMORE
HOLT/ FISHEL A good bout to open this FCBA card. They key to this fight was the huge third round that Holt had. She decked Fishel twice in progress to a 10-7 round. Holt couldn’t finish Fishel in the fourth and the fight turned in Fishel’s favor. Holt would win only one more round. At the end of ten, the fight was declared a draw. Holt had won only four rounds, but that 10-7 round staved off defeat. They went extra rounds which amounted to one as in the eleventh, Holt landed short right to Fishel’s chin and she went down and was unable to beat the count. Holt gets a KO10. This was Fishel’s fourth straight loss and she has a losing record since coming out of retirement. She’s only 32, but the fight game has passed her by.
WAGNER/ A. J. COOK Wagner looked good in taking the first two rounds, but in the third, she got badly battered as Cook took a 10-8 round back to her corner. Wagner didn’t recover from that third round. Cook put her on the canvas in the fourth and again in the fifth. Wagner managed to get to her feet after the fifth round knockdown, but she was finished. Cook battered her at will until the referee stopped the fight
PERABO/ BELLISARIO. I actually picked Bellisario to win. Please tell me what I was thinking. I mean, like, she in PLL or PLP or whatever that stable is called today. She did put up a good fight against a fighter who was ten years older, but putting up a good fight didn’t get it done. The fight was even at the end of six. Perabo was ahead at the end of eight. Bellisario came back to take the last two rounds making it five rounds apiece. The difference was the seventh round knockdown that Perabo scored. That was enough to give Perabo the decision
ACCOLA/ VAUGIER Vaugier gave away the first two rounds in getting a good look at Accola. Two rounds of looking was enough. Beginning in the third Vaugier beat Accola like the proverbial drum, as she would take all the remaining rounds. Vaugier decked Accola twice in the fifth and again in the sixth. The referee offered to stop the fight several times, but Accola refused. Now courage is admirable. Stupidity is not. Accola sustained a beating for three more rounds before she finally went down for the count. An impressive performance by Vaugier
LOWNDES/ SCERBO I have to admit what everyone knows. I am prejudiced towards Scerbo, who is my BFF. The first round was hard to watch. I was almost sick to my stomach as Lowndes took Cassie apart, flooring her twice. I was a little more hopeful towards the end of the round as Cassie made a comeback. After that Scerbo recovered and dominated the fight, flooring Lowndes in the seventh and again in the tenth. Scerbo was awarded a wide decision
VANDERVOORT/ DUSHKU This fight ended in an upset. Not a huge upset, but an upset never the less. Dushku took the first round and Vandevoort the second. Eliza decked Vandervoort in the third, but couldn’t follow up. In the fourth, the slugging went Laura’s way. Dushku took a knee for the eight count and got up only to run into a slinging right to her chin. She went down again and this time stayed down. Vandervoort scores a huge KO4
MOL/ PARE This was an unscheduled bout. Mol first came into the FCBA back in 1999. Since then she has had five fights, won only one and hasn’t fought since 2008. She was 3 inches shorter and ten years older than Pare. Does that give you an idea of how this fight was going to go? Yeah, that’s the way it went. The fight lasted six rounds. Mol took only the second. Mol managed to get to the sixth, but no further as Pare knocked her out with a right uppercut. Pare gets her first win after two losses, one of which was to Charlize in Pare’s very first bout.
BILSON/ DE RAVIN We believe Bilson holds the record for the number of stables a fighter has been in. Bilson is in her fifth stable. She may be looking for her sixth. She looked great in the first, as she dealt De Ravin a serious beating. In the second, Bilson elected to swap punches with De Ravin. Bad decision. De Ravin forced Bilson against the ropes and simply punched her into a helpless state and the fight was stopped. De Ravin in a TKO2
GLAU/ K. CARLSON Carlson came into this bout having lost eight of her last ten. I wondered why she is still in a stable. It appears all is not lost. Glau was a champion two short years ago. Since then, to say she has had a rough stretch is accurate. She had lost four of her last six. In this fight, was Carlson great or was Glau, pathetic? Take your choice. Glau would win only the sixth and seventh rounds. Carlson decked Glau in each of the first three rounds and dominated the fight getting the wide decision
SWANEPOEL/ LAW. It hasn’t been a good month for Swanepoel. She didn’t last five rounds against Lima at the Ice Hotel. I wondered how she could be expected to do any better against Law. Maybe the Academy thought since Law lost to Theron, Swanepoel could beat her. Well as bad as Charlize now is, Swanepoel is no Theron as Law proved. Law put her on the canvas in the first and second, then continued to beat her to a pulp until the referee stopped the fight giving Law a TKO4. Swanepoel has now lost six of her last eight.
HOLMES/ KURYLENKO Kurylenko was desperately trying to avoid a third loss to Holmes. She accomplished her mission, but it wasn’t exactly easy, Holmes took the first round and hurt Kurylenko in the fourth and fifth rounds. Kurylenko came back to floor Holmes in the sixth. Holmes didn’t recover between rounds and in the seventh, Olga punched Katie at will until Holmes went down for the count.
DORMER/ McADAMS Dormer entered the right undefeated in three fights and quickly earning the reputation of the new Nolin as being a totally dirty fighter. She fouled terribly in her first three fights, so McAdams had to know what to expect. It took Dormer about a minute before she fouled the first time. Rachel survived the first and second, but Dormer still had the lead at the end of five. McAdams reeled off the next four rounds. Dormer took the ninth setting up the final round with Rachel having a five-four lead. Dormer was going for a draw. She didn’t get it. Rachel took the tenth and the decision. I seldom like to see my fellow blondes lose, but this bout was an exception,
TORV/ J, KELLY This was a big fight for Torv, who is trying to climb in the rankings after beating Larter. Kelly is a very dangerous fighter, who had KOed Torv’s stablemate Ruah. not once but twice, This was quite a fight. Through the first eight rounds, Kelly won the odd numbered rounds and Torv the even with Kelly going down in the sixth, giving Anna a slight lead. In the ninth, Anna broke the pattern, as she floored Kelly after being hurt herself. Realizing she had the fight won. Anna played in smart legging around the ring, staying away from Kelly to get the decision based on the two knockdowns
TONKIN/ SKARSTEN Skarsten had lost three of her four fights. She was KOed in each of her three losses, failing to last two rounds in two of the bouts. Well she suffered her fourth KO loss, but improved somewhat, since she lasted not quite three...barely. In the two plus rounds the fight lasted Tonkin destroyed Skarsten flooring her in the second and finishing her off in the third with vicious body work. Tonkin did go low in the first, assaulting the legs, but I doubt that had anything to do with the result.
HELFER/ LANDRY I really looked forward to this fight. Could Landry stop the bleeding against a first class fighter. We got the answer and it was NO. Ali did manage to look good in the first three rounds, but when Helfer really got rolling Landry wilted. Helfer’s body attack had Landry in deep trouble at the end of fourth. Ali didn’t recover between rounds and Helfer went back to the body until Landry went down for the count. Landry has now lost five of her last six
NOLIN/ MOORE Is this ever going to end? Nolin has been viciously fouling for years winning fight after fight by fighting dirty, but the referees never seem to have a clue. You would think that they would be looking out for fouls, but they blissfully go by their incompetent ways, never seeing anything. How could you miss a knee to the stomach? If they see a foul, all they do is waive a finger. Nolin won this fight with two heinous fouls in the eighth. Her supporters will be proud
SPEARS/ ELLISON Ellison beating Spears? Ridiculous, right? That’s what happened in what could eventually be the upset of the year. Britney took the first two rounds and the fight was going as expected. In the third Ellison came on to give Spears a beating, Ellison then took the fifth. In sixth, she hit Spears with everything she had, Uppercuts, slinging rights and lefts to the head and a big right hand to the stomach. After more body work, Spears finally went down for the count.
OLSEN/ WILDE Olsen was looking good through five. She floored Wilde in the first had hurting Wilde several times in the fifth and giving Olsen two10-8 rounds. Wilde managed to stabilize herself in the sixth. In the seventh, Wilde managed to duck under a couple jabs and came up with a huge uppercut right on the button. Olsen was out before she hit the floor. I guess the Academy could say “well, she looked good until” Looking good isn’t the goal. Winning is. Looking good while getting blasted is a sure way to a mental institution
PALICKI/ BROOK Adrianne is one of my favorites. She big, tough, and dangerous, a two time champion. If only she was blonde. Brook is another of Jeri’s fighters who is on the downhill side. She lost seven of her last nine. Now you can make it eight of the last ten. Brook did take the second and third rounds, but you could just feel this fight wasn’t going to go long. It didn’t, About two minutes longer. when Adrianne did the expected and hit Brook with one of her big sweeping right hands. Brook crashed to the canvas for the count. Brook is on the Crusade list. She can probably beat Theron. Everyone else is
SWIFT/ PERRY I thought this fight was money in the bank for Front Street. Swift had no chance against Katy. Yeah, I thought that about the Spears fight. This time, I was right. I realized Swift took Perry twelve rounds before losing the last time they fought. It wasn’t going to happen this night and it didn’t. The fight lasted to the middle of the eighth when Perry landed a couple lefts to Swift’s ribs and then a right to the head. Swift went down for the count. Swift won only two rounds
HUDGENS/ WATSON If the fight had only lasted a mere 30 seconds longer it might have ended very differently. Hudgens was relatively cruising. She took the first four rounds and rounds seven, eight and nine. She did get knocked down in the fifth, but she had a huge lead going into the final round. In the tenth, everything fell apart for Hudgens. Watson came out slugging and landing. She had Hudgens hanging against the ropes, out on her feet when the bell rang. Hudgens got the decision as she took seven of the rounds.
WILLIAMS/ TISDALE, The best part of this fight, not counting the part when it was over, came near the beginning (I’ve been waiting to use that line. I stole it from Jay Stone at Canada.com) That about says it all. Mish KO1
HOUGH/ K, BELL Although Hough has a fine record, I thought Kristen had an excellent chance of winning this fight. Hough took three of the first four rounds, then Bell floored Hough in the fifth and I thought Bell had turned the fight around. It wasn’t to be. In the sixth, Hough ducked under a Bell right and smacked her with a short left that left Bell out on the canvas. Hough adds another W to her record
THERON/ C. BELL Theron lost this fight before the fight started, when she found out she had been betrayed by a stablemate, who she thought was a friend. Remember when Nolin betrayed McCarthy in the eleven fighter fight. Mac was KOed. Same here. There is a lot more going on.. Bell is your basic 45 year old has been. She doesn’t fight very much anymore and not well when she does. She had lost five of her last seven. She took six of the rounds, floored Theron three times, the last time for the count. For the first time in her spectacular career, Charlize has been KOed in three straight fights. Bell gave the Crusade what it wanted in giving Charlize a ten round beating ending in a devastating knockout. What is it going to take to convince management that Theron just doesn’t have it anymore.losing to a has been like Bell. Theron is now 4-5 in the Crusade and set up for her first losing year. Charlize is committed to finishing the Crusade. According to the published schedule, she has Brook, Cole, Tyler and Hurley left. Hopefully after that management will finally do the merciful thing and retire her.
PORTMAN/ PANETTIERE This was a high profile title fight. It was a big fight for Portman. It was fight 100, the gateway to the Hall Of Fame. For Panettiere, it was out to reclaim the title she had held twice before. Panettiere was cruising for the first five taking four of the rounds. Then came the sensational sixth. Portman was floored early. and badly hurt, but suddenly came back decking Panettiere and having her ready to go when the round ended. Panettiere recovered and came out for the seventh slugging. It was too much for Portman and she went down for the count. Portman lost her title and her chance to get into the Hall of Fame in the near future
PARK/ MICHALKA Front Street giving a title shot to their “sister” stable. Michalka was wearing the Bazz colors and she brought the title home to the Mansion with that big hill. Grace took two of the first three rounds. Michalka then took control of the fight and reeled off five straight rounds. Park had Michalka hurt in the ninth but couldn’t close it out. Michalka took the final round to get a wide decision and the title
BLOODGOOD/ RIGHETTI. Now you know why I never, ever bet against Righetti. The fight was basically over right after the bell rang for the first round, Bloodgood was lucky to finish round one. The savage beating continued for a couple minutes of the second round until Bloodgood could take no more and went down for the count. Righetti is building a spectacular record although she is and has been fighting in a very weak division which dulls the luster
NOTES
Three title fights, three title changes
Bad day for the Hall of Fame Fishel, Landry, Theron, Spears lose. Only Williams and the aged and faded Bell win
Will managers finally give up on Brook, Landry, Swanepoel, Theron, Fishel, Bilson and Skarsten?
As with others, here's hoping all goes well for Sim |
