Any current celebrity who’s ever been a party of the pageant circuit wants to fight and beat Vanessa Williams. Doesn’t matter that Vanny’s a shell of the woman who was once considered pound for pound one of boxing’s classiest: for those who have waited for Williams to lose a step, now’s the time to rise up and push her down the stairs.

This was a slow, shuffling bout—both girls holding the right hand cocked beneath the chin while extending the open left hand to paw and palm with, hoping to set up the KO cross. Williams used an actual jab sparingly, but effectively, snapping back Moakler’s head at time to disrupt blonde advances and to keep big Moaks off balance/ They circled—Shanna stalked, Vanessa sidestepped and faded: it was one punch at a time, big woman slogging.

Moakler rocked Vanessa with the occasional right to the head, but for the most part, the blonde fell in with her punches and allowed herself to be clinched-and-released with no hard done. Williams played her angles, beating Moakler to the punch and nicely positioning the blonde in the ring with more educated footwork. If Moakler was stronger and younger, Vanessa usually had the better location on her punches, superior angle, more variety and better defense. As the minutes passed, Moakler’s one-dimensional, one-speed attack became less and less likely to produce the hoped-for collapse of Vanessa.

With the fight won on the cards—Williams clinched shamelessly in a sloppy 109th—drawing boos, but cruising safely to a well-crafted win tonight. A

heartbreaking night for Shanna: this fight had the potential to be her career high-water mark. Instead, it was a confomationm of Vanessa’s long term superiority over Moakler.
