Boxing story based on a real-life tennis match held in the second round of the Wimbledon Championships on June 26th, 2013.
Venue: All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. Location: Church Road, Wimbledon, London Borough of Merton, UK.
BEFORE: With several high-profile names like Maria Sharapova and Victoria Azarenka out of the tournament already a chance arises for a wave of new generation players like Laura Robson and Eugenie Bouchard to stamp their mark on the big stage. Indeed local favorite Robson has taken her opportunity and defeated Maria Kirilenko in comprehensive fashion and now it's time for her best friend on tour, Eugenie Bouchard to follow suit.
At least that's the feeling among the pundits who happily label her as the "Next Sharapova", based on physical presence as well as being a member of Nike's Sharapova collection camp. Just like Laura Robson, Bouchard is a former Wimbledon junior champ but it's all irrelevant for now as Serbia's Ana Ivanovic provides the first big test for the blonde Canadian on the big stage. The ex-French Open champion admits she doesn't know much about Bouchard but is convinced the youngster will suffer at her hands anyway: "Laura had the home crowd support against Kirilenko but I don't think Bouchard will profit from it. In fact, I don't know if anybody even recognizes her at all".
Eugenie Bouchard wearing a yellow one-piece, white skirt and black gloves. Blonde hair tied in a braid. Ana Ivanovic wearing a blue one-piece, white skirt and blue gloves. Dark brown hair tied in a braid.
Round 1: Ivanovic moves quickly towards her rival and begins the jabbing staccato, clearly trying to intimidate the youngster early. But Genie dekes around those efforts, keeps the high guard and prevents Ana from making any in-roads; then flicks a couple of overhand herself and has the Serbian warrior in mid-range. Few circles follow before Ivanovic switches low but bounces off the elbows, eats a quick left over the top and Bouchard works the single hand thereafter as both girls show much intent but lack precision and the high tempo doesn't pay off in the second minute. Genie drops the agression, settles into throwing shots from behind the guard as Ana jumps around her and tries to connect with the flesh but can't find a way through, swings a big right hook wide of the mark and loses balance, bends forward and catches a right hook on the chest instead. Bouchard spots her chance, steps forward and tries to follow up but Ana's quick to react, jumps to the side and finally breaks away from striking distance, circles back with her hands down but the blonde refuses to chase her and sticks to her own plan as the clock expires.
Round 2: Ivanovic's the early aggressor again but Bouchard's speed prevents any real damage and the brunette wastes energy in fruitless jabbing, can't land anything solid on the blonde and settles into punching from mid-range before quickly losing temper and opening up form both hands as a sudden rain of shots follows and Genie's head snaps back for the first time as she stumbles a bit and eats a double overhand combo with the brunette moaning, but pounding away at the body and the low guard doesn't work anymore, Bouchard gets pummelled around and pushed to the ropes, ducks low and avoids a right hook on the jaw, wraps her arms around the brunette's waist and forces ref to step in. Ana has the blonde on the ropes, jabs to her face, but crashes off the gloves, switches low, can't make it stick either and Genie seeks another clinch, flicks a couple of shots on the ribs and tries to shove the Serbian away as the ref steps in again. Bouchard jumps to the right, beats Ivanovic for a left hook over the top and catches her on the eye as the brunette's effort goes wayward and it's all about the blonde from there as she whacks Ana on the tummy, moves away from the ropes and pummels her midriff, Ivanovic caught out by a solid punch needs time to gather her thoughts but the youngster keeps firing away at her only to see the clock expire in the middle of a frantic barrage to the brunette's body.
Round 3: Bouchard comes out strong in the third, visibly delighted by that late surge but it wasn't enough to tame Ivanovic's aggression anyway as the two girls collide in the middle of the ring and allthough Ana seemingly has the bigger punch, the agility of the Canadian catches her out and results in more low jabs on the ribcage. Ivanovic crashes off the high guard herself, is forced to cover up as Genie moves into close range and starts thumping the liver area, makes the brunette moan again but a left uppercut slams against Bouchard's chin and reels her back; gives Ana a time to recover but she's all after the blonde instead and lashes out at her. Too much mean intentions on display and the feet stay behind, Ana can't reach with her right hook, wobbles forward and Bouchard blasts a right hook on her chin and ANA'S ROCKED... she stumbles to the side, fails to escape in time and eats two more shots on the cheeks, too slow with the arms and Bouchard whacks her on the temple, drives a low gutwrencher and drills Ana to the ropes, keeps cleaning out her tummy thereafter and Ivanovic just can't shrug her off. She weaves around on her feet but the crowd finally get behind the blonde and neglect the brunette's pre-fight comments. Ribcage barrage follows way until the final minute when Genie finally gasses out but Ana just took the punishment and could find no reply; looks relieved upon the bell but lost for explanation to her camp during the interval as the Canadian rival shows much more craft and even skill than expected.
Round 4: Ivanovic unsure of the previous round, but only has attacking tactics in her vocabulary so jumps after the blonde again, lands solid shots on the tummy and staggers Bouchard for a moment but then a big left smacks Ana on the temple again and Eugenie follows up with more shots on the chest, some Sharapova-like hooks swing around the head and Ivanovic must retreat in avoidance; gets nailed on the cheeks though and eventually wobbles back before Genie leaps after her and spikes with another jab on the chin just before Ana can raise her arms. Single striking over the top follows; Ana's on the back foot and falls to the ropes again as the crowd begins to really appreciate the Canadian's efforts. Meanwhile Ivanovic falls for the low attack again, keeps the arms too high and allows Genie to pound away at the ribs; arms slump lower and a left hook on the temple half-spins the brunette on the turnbuckles; Bouchard just won't let go and spikes the liver area; renders Ana stationery and works the single hand with Ivanovic totally off her comfort zone, just soaking up punishment and turning into a hittable journeywoman, a real sign of recent times for the once dominant Serbian warrior. She tries to respond with some single shots but after barely grazing the blonde's flesh eats a hook on the nose and caves in, allows Bouchard to hammer her stomach and as the youngster runs out of steam again, there's no reply anyway cause Ana just waits for the bell and looks totally lost out there, unable to trouble the rampant opponent.
Round 5: Early signs of pain on Ana's face as the repeated body blows seem to have taken effect on the Serbian fighter. Genie has beaten her for pace so far and it's more obvious now as she closes on Ivanovic and gives her more midriff misery, whacks around the elbows in close range, leans on the cumbersome rival and Ivanovic desperately works some single overhands; smacks the blonde on the face a few times but lacks core strenght behind those efforts, eats more ribcage shots instead and just staggers in the middle of the ring as Eugenie opens up form both wings, slams leather into the tummy and sinks the brunette on her knees. Ana tries to clinch, gets nailed by a right uppercut and wobbles back, eats a left overhand on the eye and yelps in pain again as Bouchard pummels her into the ropes in the second minute; same old story follows, midriff destruction much to the crowd's delight and now Ivanovic just gets shoved into the ropes, she clinches the blonde but the ref refuses to step in and in fact the grip loosens as more leather lands on the brunette's tummy and she just closes her eyes as the teenager keeps pounding away at her, relentless barrage along the ropes and the brunette's moans keep getting louder and louder as she offers nothing back anymore. Bouchard blocks her with her right arm and pins to the turnbuckle, drills the left hand on the ribs and Ana drops her head, just soaks up all the venom and it doesn't stop at the bell; Genie in a different world, keeps slamming leather on the aching rival's body and the ref has to pull her back as she threatens to make a real mess of Ivanovic who's in all sorts of bother instead. With her eyes closed and limping, Ana does make it back to her stool but the internal pain must be too much for her now and the crowd begins to accept the fact a huge upset is really on the cards. No way back for the Serbian for sure?
Round 6: Genie easily notices the ammount of pain she's given the brunette and just charges after her as Ivanovic can barely move now, still visibly limping as she tries to protect the liver area. She drops her right arm too low though and gets clubbed by a swift left hook on the temple as her head snaps back and the dark braid spins around her neck, another left from Bouchard on the eye and Ana just bends forward, gets slammed by a right hook on the ribs and wobbles again, left hook pierces her mitts again and catches clean on the nose... IVANOVIC FALLS FLAT ON HER BACK as a result and the crowd's reaction concurs with Bouchard's as the young blonde spins around on her left foot and does the best impression of Ana's trademark fistpump... no need to rub it into the Serbian though as Ivanovic can't pay back for the insult, struggles to beat the count; rolls onto her knees, somehow gets up at nine and that's as good as it gets with her eyes suspiciously misty... ref allows it to continue though, refuses to wave it off on the spot and now gives the Canadian a chance to a front cover photo finish.. left hook on the jaw, Ana's arms unable to move up in time, right hook on the eye, left on the jaw again as the dark braid spins around the neck.. Genie throws another right on the mouth but it cuts the air... IVANOVIC SLUMPS ON HER KNEES, rolls onto the left side with her eyes closed and it's truly over now. The upset in complete and the ref doesn't even bother with the count... KO R6 Eugenie Bouchard!!!
AFTER: A star is born? The Wimbledon crowd recognize one when they see her. And Eugenie Bouchard fits all the neccessary criteria. Up in the stands her best friend Laura Robson leads the applause and rightfully so as beating Ana Ivanovic at the biggest tennis venue in the world on your debut is truly something special. And just like the Brit, the Canadian's victory was totally deserved and capped off with a juicy knockout. Ana will be nursing those sore ribs for quite a few days as she is helped off the ring while Genie sports a trademark smile to the cameras. The big names might have suffered earlier this week but the new generation looks to be more than ready to take center stage instead. And who would bet against them now?
Final result: Eugenie Bouchard def. Ana Ivanovic KO6.
