TESS VALMORE
This was a great night of fights. Two title fights and two title changes. One huge upset. Several fights which are candidates for fight of the year. Three Hall of Fame fighters in action, all won, There two extra round fights and a third that should have been had one fighter not walked out of the ring. Nothing like a night in the FCBA
LEFEVRE/ PARE Your first fight in the FCBA can be a painful experience as LeFevre learned the hard way. It’s not that she didn’t have her moments. She took three of the first six rounds and was doing better than expected. It all came to naught early in the seventh. Pare hurt her with a hook and then stalked her around the ring until she caught LeFevre with an overhand right and left hook. LeFevre was out before she hit the canvas. KO7 Pare
SILK/ VANDERVOORT Vandervoort was in line for a title shot. ‘Was’ is the operating word. Silk spoiled that opportunity. She gave Vandervoort one of the worst beatings of her career. The beating started in the fourth when Silk put Laura on the deck. Vandervoort made a little comeback in the seventh, but that was the only round she would take after that knockdown. Silk administered a beating round after round putting Laura on the canvas again in the eighth. Anna got the decision wide.
SONG/ TISDALE Bazz must be wondering why they traded for Song. She recently failed to finish the third round against Sienna Miller. Now she didn’t finish the sixth against Tisdale. This wasn’t a fight, it was an annihilation, Tisdale feasted in every round dropping Song twice in the second and beating beating her into a sobbing wreck in the sixth, at which point the fight was stopped
JOJO/ HALE. It was with some hesitancy that I predicted a Hale win, but I just figured that this was a fight picked by management to guarantee a Hale victory. It was an OK fight with Hale having a slight lead going into the sixth. Hale hurt JoJo early in the sixth and then finished her off with a sweeping left midway through the round. Tractorpull awards JoJo it’s “I got KOed by Lucy Hale” T-shirt
MOAKLER/ NOLIN. I have no idea what possessed Moakler to think she could beat Nolin. She has never beaten anyone. Nolin had a field day. She gave Moakler a beating round after round. She decked her in the first and finally finished her off with horrendous blasting in the sixth. Of course Gena Lee got in her usual fouls in the first and second.
VALANCE/ YUSTMAN The first two rounds were tactical in nature. Yustman, then forged to the lead by winning the third and fourth rounds. After that, it was all Valance who took the next four rounds decking Yustman in the fifth and seventh. Now, I warned all y’all (that’s the plural of y’all) about Yustman’s right hand. She landed that right early in the ninth and landed right after right until Valance was a helpless wreck and the bout was stopped. Yustman come from behind TKO9
HOLT/ SCHERZINGER Holt was coming into this fight undefeated with seven wins. Could Nicole snap that streak? Through six that’s exactly what it looked like would happen. Scherzinger danced and jabbed her way to a huge lead. That ended in the seventh. Holt blitzed Nicole the canvas early in the round. Nicole got up only to be punched around the ring at will. Holt finally ended the fight with short right uppercut that put Scherzinger down for the count. Holt is now demanding a title shot. is there anyone out there who can derail the Holt express?
SEYDOUX/ OLSEN The first Academy fight of the night for the stable in turmoil It promised to be a good fight. That’s not the way it turned out. Olsen lost only one round of the five it lasted. Seydoux didn’t survive the fifth as Olsen used her heavier hands to drape Seydoux helpless in the ropes and the fight was stopped
THEISSEN/ CAMPBELL Neve is one of my good friends, but I can’t believe she dissed her stablemate, Jewel, in the pre-fight. Neve took the first two rounds off just to see what Theissen had. Campbell gave Theissen a little harder time in the third. In the fourth, Neve had seen all she wanted to see and put the hammer down drilling a left behind Theissen elbow and finish her off with a right to the chin.
KE$HA/ RIHANNA The last time I was at Front Street, they were working with Ke$ha with her footwork. It’s back to the gym, because Ke$ha forgot about footwork and went back to her usual slugging. It didn’t pay off. She lasted less the nine minutes in a slugging match that saw Rihanna go down in the second and Ke$ha twice in the third, both times from rights to the stomach and lefts to the chin. The second time, she didn’t get up. Rihanna walks away with her first win in almost two years.
FREEMAN/ LAW This was a fight that I really wanted to see and it turned out the way I expected, a great fight. it looked like to me Freeman gave away the first two rounds. If that was the case is was a disastrous decision. Those two rounds cost Freeman the fight. Cassidy floored Katrina in the third and fifth but would only take two more rounds. The two knockdowns were enough to get Cassidy a draw. In extra rounds Freeman took the eleventh. The twelfth was a sensational round with both being hurt, but Law getting the better of it. The thirteenth went to Law who got the decision. Law got the win this time however this could be the beginning of a great rivalry. A Theron/ Bell type rivalry. I still think both these ladies pose big dangers to the welter division
GOVICH/ UPTON To me, this was an upset. I never thought Upton could or would win this fight. There is no denying she can hit, but her skill set leaves some to be desired. Maybe I over-rated Govich. This was a fine fight between two big sluggers. It was an even fight through eight with each getting hurt along the way. In the ninth, some heavy Upton body work turned Govich away from Upton, who then landed a big right behind the ear and the fight was over with Govich being counted out.
MITCHELL/ ELLISON You might call this a bookend fight. The first and tenth rounds belonged to Mitchell. The majority of the rounds in between belong to Ellison. Mitchell floored Ellison in the first. Ellison, then, took six of the eight rounds. The tenth again belonged to Mitchell, who came out slugging and floored Ellison. Ellison would get up only to sustain a heavy body attack the left her sagging in the ropes, hands down. The referee wisely stopped the fight.
CARTER/ CYRUS I thought this would be laugher and it was. Cyrus did have a good minute in the first, hurting Carter. Carter, however ended the round flooring Cyrus. She didn’t waste anytime in the second in disposing of Cyrus. A overhand right to the chin did the job. This was the second time these two have fought and the second time, Cyrus failed to finish. If she is smart she won’t go for a third
TONKIN/ HELFER Well, I have to agree with the master pundit. This is probably going to be both the upset and KO of the year. This was nothing but a stay busy fight for Helfer. A walk in the park. Tonkin’s chances of winning were zero, but at the end of about a minute and a half, She was standing and Helfer wasn’t. Tonkin caught Tricia with a hook that dropped Helfer, hitting her head hard on the canvas. Helfer managed to regain her feet but was no longer competitive. Tonkin bunched her up with body work and ended the fight with chin music
HOUGH/ CHABERT I just knew it. I can never predict a Chabert fight correctly. I picked her to win this fight. Did she? NO. Hough took the first three rounds, but Lacey came back to win the next four and it looked like I was going to be right for once. Hough took the eighth to even the fight up. My dreams of being right on this bout went down the commode in the ninth when a right to Chabert’s chin sent her to LaLa land. She stayed on her feet sagging in the ropes and Hough went jug until the referee stopped the fight
DANES/ VANCAMP Don’t ever count out a fighter in the Hall Of Fame until the bout is over. Danes barely managed to escape the first round without being TKOed. The Vancamp beating continued through three. Danes managed to take the fourth and did some damage to Vancamp in the sixth. In the seventh, Danes put her head down and went to work on Vancamp’s body, and work it she did, until Vancamp couldn’t take any more and down for the count
DOBREV/ KUNIS Dobrev fans have to be elated as this was a evenly matched bout. Dobrev came very close to winning the bout in the first round, but Kunis, despite being hurt and swooning managed to finish the round. Kunis then made a remarkable comeback in the next two rounds. The comeback ended in the fourth. In the final minute a Dobrev right sent Kunis staggering into the ropes. She didn’t recover and Dobrev went on a punching spree that ended with Kunis going down for the count
JOHANSSON/ KELLY This was one the smartest and best performances from Johansson that we have seen in ages. She knew she couldn’t slug with Kelly. She danced, she moved, she jabbed. She kept Kelly off balance for much of the fight and even floored her in the fourth. Johansson simply stayed away from a head hunting Kelly in the final round and was awarded a wide decision
TYLER/ THERON. This was one of the most important fights in Theron's illustrious career. She simply had to win this fight it was an absolute must. Her opponent had only three fights to her credit although she won all three by KO’s. Tyler was also three inches taller. The “golden goddess” came through with the win. It wasn’t without its downsides though. Charlize came close to being TKOed in the fifth. She survived that round, the sixth and a hard punishing ninth. She did enough to get the decision. It was a good win for her although not an impressive one since she was fighting an opponent who had only three fights in nine years, I believe she has now evened up the Crusade at five wins and losses. I’m happy Charlize won, but she did look dispirited and tired
ROMJIN/ C. BELL This was another great fight. Lots of hard feelings here. Two of the Crusaders in anger. Would it be the tall blonde or Bell The Betrayer. It was a brutal slugging bout. Bell went down in the first and Romjin in the sixth. Romjin had the lead going into the final round, but let that round slip from her grasp and the fight ended in draw. There was only one extra round. Bell came on to deck Romjin for the count.
BECKINSALE/ DORMER This has been quite an active night thus far. This was another hard fought, crowd pleasing, cliff hanger The rounds were hotly contested with Beckinsale seemingly having the edge through five. Late in the sixth, Beckinsale went down from a foul. It was surprising that Dormer waited that long to foul. Dormer had the lead going into the ninth but Beckinsale gave her a real shellacking including a payback foul. I gave Beckinsale the edge in the tenth. The fight was declared a draw. Rather than go into extra rounds, Beckinsale mouthed some excuse and fled the ring.
CRUZ/ DUNST Cruz is staying busy at the age of 39 and if she fights the way she did tonight, she may be fighting or a couple years more. She did a fandango around Dunst most of the night as she danced and poked. She did have some rather anxious moments as Dunst floored her in the fifth and sixth. She returned the favor to Dunst in the ninth as Cruz took eight of the ten rounds.
CUCUO/ LAWRENCE The new queen of the Academy looking to move up in the rankings by beating a highly regarded veteran. She found that moving up in the rankings isn’t easy. Cucuo took the lead in the fight by being the aggressor in the first three rounds and getting the better of the exchanges. Jennifer changed tactics in the fourth and as the aggressor took that round and the fifth. At the beginning of the sixth, the crafty veteran Cucuo simply let Lawrence walk into the receiving end of a huge left uppercut and Lawrence went down. After several attempts, Lawrence finally pulled herself up, but started sliding across the ropes and the fight was called to a halt giving Cucuo the TKO. I seriously doubt this loss will have any effect on the turmoil inside the Academy
PATENTEE/ SHAHI Surprises never seem to stop. You might call the result of the fight an upset, but i don’t think it is the upset of the year kind. Hayden got off to a great start decking Shahi in the second and taking four of the first five rounds. Hayden looked like a champ going into the sixth. In that round Panettiere got into a slugging match with Shahi and the slugging went Sarah’s way. A right uppercut put Hayden in desperate shape and then Sarah simply punched Hayden’s head back and forth until the little blonde went down for the count. Shahi is the new champ in her seventeenth fight
MICHALKA/ MUNN The winner of this fight didn’t particularly surprise me, but the margin by which she won did. The rounds were hotly contested, but Munn came out on top in every round except the third, eighth and tenth. Michalka came close to winning the fight in the eighth when she decked Munn and had her swooning, but couldn’t finish her. Munn then floored Michalka in the ninth and wearily managed to get through the final round to take the decision and the title. “Wary the head that wears the crown” is no more true than in the FCBA. I believe this was the sixth straight title fight in which the title has changed hands. |
