The crowd inside the Cardiff Arena is still stunned by Melanie Brown's destruction of Imogen Thomas but the penultimate fight on the Summer Grudge Sessions card promises to be even more brutal. Two staunch enemies, Essex's Denise van Outen and County Down's Christine Bleakley have agreed for a rematch in what is widely regarded as the biggest feud between TV personalities around BBU. In fact, ever since van Outen became the lead reporter, Bleakley refuses to even share the room with her but is more than happy to share the ring tonight.
The two vixens met in November of 2011 where van Outen proudly battered Bleakley into a sixth round stoppage, what she recalls as her best fight in BBU career. With a recent victory over Alesha Dixon most of the fans and pundits believe she will give the raven-haired foe another brutal defeat and Denise herself is happy to confirm these predictions as she tells Olivia Godfrey: "Yeah, that's right Olive, everyone will witness me absolutely destroy that empty-headed Bleakley cow again. I just can't wait to rip her apart! It's gonna be fun!"
Meanwhile Christine refuses to speak to Godfrey before the fight; she's asked for the rematch after convincingly stopping Elisabetta Canalis just days ago but has a point to prove after the Essex blonde pounded her into submission first time around. Both women have suffered at the hands of Kristy Hinze not that long ago so the fight is not labelled as the "Best of the TV" but it's as good as it gets anyway with fellow pundits Kate Garraway and Andrea McLean all in the audience for this grudge contest. One thing must be taken for granted though, the loser will suffer tonight and suffer badly!
Denise van Outen wearing a bright orange bikini and black gloves. Blonde hair in loose waves. Christine Bleakley wearing a Chelsea blue bikini and silver gloves. Raven-black hair in loose curls. The fight is scheduled for ten rounds in the lightweight division.
Round 1: Bleakley jabs at the blonde's body early and flicks couple of crosses on the chest but Denise responds with a menacing series on the head and scores noteworthy punches, snaps the brunette's head back and keeps swinging upstairs before Christine has to jump to the side in avoidance and correct her position. Van Outen moves forward though and jabs to the body, tries to uppercut the rack but eats a right hook on the counter and circles back instead. It's Bleakley's turn to hassle her opponent in the final minute but the Essex girl is quicker on her feet and only gets grazed on the arms with a fruitless jabbing as the clock expires and leaves the Ulster woman frustrated.
Round 2: More aggression from Christine who frantically jabs at the blonde's midriff before catching her with a seemingly wayward hook on the chin. Denise's head snaps back as she got beaten for that punched and missed her own effort on the face; eats another left hook on the temple and has to cover up as Christine closes the distance and whacks her around the elbows, tries to shatter her mitts but can't find more facial success and has to revert into pounding away at the midriff again. Van Outen weaves around on her feet, can't shrug the Ulster foe off and escape into safety; finally settles into wrapping her arms around Bleakley's waist and has the ref pushing her away moments later as more leather crashes off her tummy with the raven-haired warrior clearly ignoring the command. Another forward leap from Bleakley follows but she fails to connect with the blonde's face this time and allows her to circle back to center of the ring. Nifty footwork from the older girl prevents further action and Bleakley's visibly upset at the bell allthough the Cardiff crowd thinks she's done more than enough to win the round anyway.
Round 3: It's not about winning rounds though, it's about hurting your opponent and the grudge levels are at premium right now. Denise still hangs back, does she want to wear Christine out before viciously pouncing on her? Or simply annoy her to the point she exposes herself to a KO-bound piledriver? Either way Bleakley makes sure van Outen doesn't ponder her options too long, has her weaving around on her feet again with another jabbing combo to the face that sliced the iffy looking guard. Blonde holds her ground though, indicates the punches don't affect her at all and settles into single striking from behind the guard. But she fails to hurt the raven-haired opponent whereas Bleakley continues to lean on her and jabs to the ribcage until she eats one of Denise's hooks on the mouth and drops her aggressive approach for a while and circles back. Van Outen leaps after her but falls into a clinch and forces the ref into action; Christine with a clean hook after the command, follows with a right jab on the chest which finally unsettles van Outen and sparks her into a furious response. She goes around the brunette's elbows and makes her moan for the first time, outworks her in close range and lands a solid uppercut on the jaw to complete the cycle. At the bell it's the Ulster girl seeking clinch with Denise pounding away at her forearms and looking to slice through but she has to be dragged away by the ref and leaves the crowd fascinated over the prospects on offer.
Round 4: Another aggressive jump from Bleakley who rains punches on van Outen's body before finding an uppercut on the jaw and staggering the blonde back. Christine pounces; leans on her rival and keeps jabbing on the tummy but van Outen finally responds with strikes over the top and suddenly a frantic exchange in the middle of the ring ensues much to the crowd's delight. They've witnessed a brutal defeat for one of the local stars minutes before and now clearly don't mind an English and Irish foes battering each other for personal reasons! Denise cracks a left hook on the eye and beats Christine for another one from the other side; snaps the brunette's head back and makes her groan in pain, rips into her rack afterwards and rocks Bleakley's breasts inside that Chelsea blue bikini top; the raven-haired girl must cover up but still gets pummelled around as big swings from the Essex blonde sway her back & forth and that's finally some vintage van Outen on display. Bleakley gets spiked back to the ropes, shows cracks in her guard as van Outen slices the mitts and clobbers the mouth, once.. twice even and the raven-black hair fly back again as the Cardiff crowd encourages the blonde into more vicious action. A brutal KO was promised beforehand and the audience doesn't care who's gonna be reduced into a pulp as long as it's as bad as anticipated. Christine's firmly trapped on the ropes in the final minute and gets punished as the blonde rolls back eighteen months and finally picks up where she left off, hammering Bleakley into a mush but she needs more of this as the clock expires and leaves her staring at the Ulster foe with utter disdain.
Round 5: Denise finally kicks into gear, makes some fancy moves forward and nails Christine on the eye with her first punch, follows up with a rapid fire on the ribcage as the raven-haired woman gets caught out in close range and shows no match for the blonde's speed and agility across the canvas. She sags back on her knees, allows the hatred blonde to pound away at her midriff afterwards and Denise is just ripping into her guts much to the crowd's delight, has the Ulster warrior moaning and yelping in pain and some of the viewers are already shouting for a knockout but despite van Outen lacing Bleakley on her ribs, there's no sign of sending the Chelsea blue-clad girl down and that even gets Denise annoyed as she falls into a surprising clinch with Christine jumping at her with eyes closed, accepting the punishment she's received but determined to tame the onslaught and the ref has to separate the vixens. Denise is really upset, wants to continue with Bleakley's midriff assault but gets shoved away again and now argues with the man in charge instead of attacking her foe and Christine just circles back, manages to stay away from more punches in the final minute as van Outen teases her with a big smile on her face, seemingly lets the referee scuffle go and looks convinced she's gonna trap the raven-haired woman right where she wants her really soon. Olivia Godfrey agrees in the booth: "I can totally see Denise punching the crap out of Christine now!"
Round 6: A worried look on Kate Garraway's face in the audience as van Outen moves to really hurt Bleakley now and whips more shots on the eye, slicing the high guard with ease in the proccess. Christine struggles with single striking response but eats more vicious leather on the cheeks and as her head snaps back, Denise goes after the midriff for a change, pummels the raven-haired girl back to the ropes, shrugs off clinching attempts and continues to turn her tummy into a mush. Painful yelps from Bleakley's mouth follow as the rampant blonde seeks ribcage destruction; some people in the crowd are stunned that the Ulster brunette can take all this punishment but it's a matter of pride between these two and allthough quite softened up already, Christine survives the onslaught, gets spun around the turnbuckles late in the going as van Outen eventually runs out of steam and looks annoyed that despite all her efforts, she just couldn't send the brunette down. But when the crowd starts chanting her name during the interval, she waves them back and seems to acknowledge the fact she's going to win this contest one way or another.
Round 7: Denise's fully in her comfort zone now; lashes out at her visibly hurting rival, slams more punches on the ribcage, staggers Bleakley on the spot and finally connects with the face again. She gives the brunette a couple of nasty lumps with a precise left/right combo and rains leather on her thereafter as Christine tries to counter from behind her guard but only grazes the forearms and eventually must jump back to the ropes with the blonde right after her, jabbing at the midsection, swinging around the head and just harrassing her all over the canvas. But then Denise starts to show first signs of fatigue and can't close her opponent down anymore as Christine, allthough sporting some nasty facial damage, shows some agility and just strays away from her foe, even lands couple of good hooks on the body, seeks more counter in the final minute as van Outen still breaths hate but can't follow her mind with her actions and misses a pummelling attempt at the rack, eats a quick left hook on the jaw and settles for a late clinch as Bleakley looks to find some respite before potentially coming back into this fight. The scorecards still look inconclusive without a single knockdown through seven.
Round 8: The Cardiff audience still fully behind the blonde, perhaps some free tickets from BBU TV to enhance the lead reporter's fanbase for this one but the action is slow to get underway in the eight as both women circle around each other for a while, looking affected by the physical aspects of tonight's showdown. Denise throws Christine another angry stare but refuses to punish her straight away, digs deep into her experience and tries to tease the brunette into making the first move which eventually happens as Bleakley finally loses her temper and leaps after the blonde. Van Outen's tactics might have been correct but she's too slow to react and gets caught by a sudden rage of fury as Christine opens from both side and spikes the blonde on the tummy, uppercuts her rack and sags the older woman on her knees with a crisp left hook on the mouth as the Cardiff support dwindles with Bleakley frantically working on the blonde's midriff thereafter, just pounding away at the tummy and pushing van Outen to the ropes in the final minute. Denise really looks tired now, just swaying back & forth on her feet but eating more punishment anyway with Bleakley's face reddened with exhaustion but she keeps her efforts going until the dying seconds and it's a free-for-all punching display in the last couple of rounds but the core strenght seems to be lacking as there are still no signs of a knockdown and allthough both women look roughed up a bit, they refuse to break down mentally and Christine does a good job of avenging at least that part of her TKO loss back in 2011 when she admitted she couldn't take Denise's punches anymore. Either her striking resistance improved as van Outen lost of her hitting power.
Round 9: Christine really believes she needs a knockout now with the Cardiff crowd still supporting her nemesis, the Lioness camp reckons the judges will do likewise. She jumps after van Outen and beats her for pace, begins throwing leather on the body first but Denise responds and accepts the trade-off invitation. Vicious stuff in the middle of the ring as both women seek terminal damage of each other. Denise inflicts more lumps on Christine's battered face but wobbles back in wake of some heavy leather crashing off her cheeks, intriguing action with the blonde almost cutting the raven-haired girl's face into a pulp but looking more vulnerable as she's rocked with another left hook on the jaw and now almost loses her balance alltogether as Bleakley ravages her from over the top, snaps the blonde hair around the neck and spiked the right eye with a big left jab, has van Outen spinning towards the ropes and that's a bad cut on her eye appearing as Christine finally inflicted a significant facial damage on her rival and that really spurs her into more attacks. She traps the blonde foe on the ropes and drills her tummy, nails the rack too and has Denise covering up as the support from the audience continues to dwindle as Bleakley peppers her navel with single handed assault, shoves the blonde further butt-in-ropes and van Outen really looks tired now, just about hangs on until the bell and even Olivia Godfrey in the BBU TV booth is left puzzled at the outcome with a knockout almost impossible to happen now even in wake of the gruesome nature of this bout. Christine removes raven tresses from her eyes, shows extended cuts on both cheeks which are very swollen as Denise is worried by the brow ridge wound herself but keeps staring at her foe during the interval as the venomous mindset is still very much alive.
Round 10: Van Outen's replaced the concern for her brow ridge wound with anger and leaps after the brunette, not many people predicted that with the judges perhaps more likely to favor her but she misses a put away hook on the nose and almost walks into a huge right hook herself.. correction, she does walk into it and gets clobbered on the left eye as she gets rooted to the spot in a flash with Bleakley sending leather at her tummy and leaving the blonde in a confised state, the high guard is worthless with the Ulster woman hammering away at the navel, simply thumping leather against the body and exposing the blonde's fatigue. So much for that experience then! Another series deep down in the tummy sink Denise on her knees; she yelps in pain but lowers the guard and Christine lands the best single punch of her BBU career to catch the Essex woman on the jaw clean... THAT SENDS VAN OUTEN SPAWLING ON THE CANVAS!!! The fallen woman just shell-shocked at this outcome, stares at the lights mounted over the ring and blinks frantically before realizing the count reached five already and she pushes herself off both arms, just wobbles back in front of the ref at eight but that's a dazed looking blonde in the ring now with Christine almost biting her mouthpiece in half as she jumps after van Outen, gives her more jabbing leather on the tummy and drives towards the ropes. Van Outen's badly rocked and just tries to avoid more damage, protects the wounded eye but that leaves the door wide open for Bleakley to clean out her midsection and Christine's no rookie herself; she leans on the blonde, pushes her butt-in-ropes and stranded for good, keeps thumping her mitts against the swollen tummy with Denise's eyes wide open and she's just shocked out there now, shocked at Bleakley punching her into a battered mess, destroying one of the best bodies of Essex, the best body on BBU TV, running riot and she's either on drugs or hell knows what with the blonde just dropping her arms and getting reduced into a training sack and a sack that gets thrown to a dumpster with so much damage inflicted on it. The effort is there and van Outen is getting hammered around but she refuses to hit the canvas and the ref doesn't wave it off either, another man familiar with the BBU TV afterparties? Bleakley is livid at the final bell, cheap shots the blonde across the mouth and almost gets herself disqualified, in fact but for van Outen not crashing down in all sorts of bother on canvas there might have been some really ugly scenes. Seeing van Outen sobbing in pain on the canvas is ugly enough for BBU TV and allthough being a brunette herself, Olivia Godfrey offers little sympathy for the Ulster warrior, criticizes the dirty tactics but it's all over for tonight and the fight will go to the scorecards...
A short break follows before van Outen can be lifted off the canvas and she looks like a journeyowoman now with a really bad eye injury and a swollen tummy but still, she looks better than Bleakley who's face is all swollen up and sporting numerous nasty lumps. Christine sure too more punches to her face but answered with some solid destruction of van Outen's midriff. But here we go...
After ten rounds of boxing we go to the scorecards.... judges score the bout 96-94, 96-95 and 96-95 all for you winner through unanimous decision...
(the entire Cardiff Arena holds it's breath now...)
...CHRISTINE BLEAKLEY!!!!
Post-fight: Rampant scenes in the Lioness corner as they follow Mel B.'s stoppage of Imogen Thomas with another fine display of female celebrity boxing, a display in a far more important grudge bout though as Christine just closes her eyes and punches the air in delight with Denise acting like she's run against a brick wall, just refusing to accept the verdict and making obscene gestures to the otherwise supporting crowd. Indeed the audience turns sour on the blonde and as she rushes out of the ring, a loud series of whistles and jeering follows her. One has to handle the loss as good as the victory and quite frankly van Outen let the emotions get the better of her in the end.
Instead of riding out, what now can be confirmed, a safe points victory, she still wanted to knock Bleakley out and got countered in the most painful way possible. A late knockdown eventually gave the Irish brunette a much-needed victory, probably the biggest victory of her entire career but once the dust settles, the BBU TV is expected to make another challenge towards her to settle the dispute. A victory for the Essex blonde would have settled it already but the rabbit escaped from the hat and turned into a vicious lioness. A trademark success for the Barnet-based stable with Bleakley dwelling in the camera's long after the final bell despite her roughed up face. And there's still the Main Event left on the card with more Lioness Club presence.
Final result: Christine Bleakley def. Denise van Outen UD10.
