BEFORE:
"Here's the thing," says a smiling Kate. "This welterweight division needs saving. I mean, look at the top of the division. Righetti? Fourth banana on some TELEVISION show! Regan? Freeman? CABLE! Nolin? NINETIES cable! What THIS division needs is STAR power, and who better that an international film star and Academy Award winner? So, here I am, come to save this division from the nameless women currently on the top. But. First. It's time to prove who the REAL 'Queen of British Boxing' is, by disposing of Gemma Arterton!"
"I doubt there'll be time left for my comments," says a smiling Gemma. "I'm sure Winslet will go on and on about how wonderful she is and how she's DEIGNED to climb into the ring with the great unwashed. Know who she reminds me of? Zeta-Jones. And I took GREAT pleasure in leaving THAT wench on her knees."
ROUND ONE:
O'Dell: "Back at ringside and..."
McCarthy: "Is that The Tonedeafs again?"
Tess(sighing): "The DEFtones! And the song is 'Passenger'..."
O'Dell: "And that means the Queen of Foxfire Atlantic, Oscar winner Kate Winslet is on her way to the ring..."
McCarthy: "I'm not sure how you can be queen of anything without an FCBA win. And listening to her talk pre-fight she's starting to remind me of ANOTHER arrogant Brit named Kate!"
Cassie: "I'm not sure you should be insulting The Duchess of Cambridge..."
McCarthy: "I'm not TALKING about the Kate MIDDLETON!"
Cassie: "Then to whomever could you be referring?"
McCarthy: "You know very WELL who, and I'm not saying her name! Besides, I'm still BASKING in the glow of watching the end of Campbell's Front Street career! The only thing that would make it more perfect would be if I were RESPONSIBLE for her being on the STREET!"
Tess: "Um, Wiz isn't firing Neve. He's already announced that she'll retire when she decides to and will then become a vice president in the Front Street organization..."
McCarthy: "Sure, that's what he SAYS, but we ALL know he's flavor of the month..."
Cassie: "If it makes you FEEL any better, Mac, Neve was originally brought to Front Street to deal with YOU. So, when you think about it, YOU'RE responsible for her getting management again, getting a chance to win the title again, and getting a chance to get the fights to make the Hall of Fame!"
"Sharknado"
Starring Cassie Scerbo...
McCarthy: "...BEFORE I EVEN SAID ANYTHING!"
O'Dell: "A little quick on the draw, truck..."
McCarthy: "Hey, you weren't first billed in that movie, you little twerp..."
Cassie: "DIRECTOR'S cut!"
O'Dell: "Winslet, as usual, taking her time getting down the aisle, waving to the crowd. Has the ropes held open by the Foxfire Atlantic corner people..."
McCarthy: "Ridiculous!"
O'Dell: "Kate helped off with the robe. Wearing that black number she wore against Sobieski last time out, and that's The Clash and 'London Calling', and here comes The Queen of British Boxing, 'The Gravesend Gladiator', Gemma Arterton!"
Tess: "Wiz very high on Gemma. He's on record as saying she's as good as any fighter he has..."
McCarthy: "Shows what HE knows about boxing! The only two fighters he has that are worth ANYthing are Torv and Sobieski!"
O'Dell: "Arterton into the ring, helped off with the robe by Jewel and Britney to reveal that lovely violet two piece she likes, and the ladies about ready. Some interesting storylines in place for this one. Kate, as Mac mentioned, without an FCBA win, but she's only fought sporadically and now seems to be preparing to make a push at welter. Nothing to lose and everything to gain tonight. Gemma, meanwhile, has lost only two fights since coming to Front Street, so she's not exactly used to doing what she's doing right now, fighting coming off a loss. Let's get some picks. Tess on record as favoring Gemma. What do you think, Mac?"
McCarthy: "Arterton's overrated like all the Hookers except Torv and Sobieski, but she can still beat this arrogant British twit!"
O'Dell: "Cassie?"
Cassie: "I agree with Tess!"
McCarthy: "UNbelievable!"
O'Dell: "Our ladies in agreement. Let's see if they're right. There's the bell and BOMBS AWAY in the opening seconds! Winslet right after Gemma and Arterton slugging right back!"
McCarthy: "Winslet throwing caution to the wind here! Like you said, Jenny, everything to gain and nothing to lose!"
O'Dell: "And Arterton not going to back down from Kate, giving as good as she gets in some big, nasty exchanges!"
Tess: "Gemma hits as hard as anyone at Front Street. She can trade with Winslet."
O'Dell: "And she just proved it. Things settling down now as the round goes on. Arterton to the left jab. Moving the feet, circling right. Winslet trying to close. Wants to brawl inside."
Cassie: "Arterton a very well balanced fighter. She can slug and she can box, and that makes her a very dangerous opponent. Last time out, she was giving up some slicks and quicks to Jill Wagner, something almost ALL lightweights do. But, tonight, she has the advantage in those categories and she's using it as this round nears an end."
O'Dell: "Kate having some success herself, but as the first comes to an end, Gemma going to get the close points."
Tess: "Gemma lost by a single point her last time out, and we've already seen a one-point decision tonight, so, it may be early, but Gemma has the 10-9 lead."
ROUND TWO:
O'Dell: "Second round underway and HERE WE GO AGAIN! Arterton and Winslet slinging leather at one another! Kate getting off some heavy shot, but being matched again by big shelling from Gemma!"
McCarthy: "Fans liking this, Jenny, but it may be playing into Winslet's hands. This is HER game, not necessarily Gemma's."
O'Dell: "But Arterton playing it pretty well, and again slowing the pace as the round goes on. Circling again. Using the big left jab to slow Kate's advances. Winslet looking to close and slug, but Gems again slowly taking command of the field."
Cassie: "Using that left to gain space. Using the feet to turn Winslet, making this all about boxing now, and that IS Gemma's game."
O'Dell: "And, again, it's Arterton getting the better of things down the stretch. Kate able to do some scoring of her own, but it will be Gemma who gets the points for the second consecutive round."
Tess: "20-18. Good start for Arterton."
ROUND THREE:
O'Dell: "Third round underway and Gemma to the left hand immediately this time, no heavy firefight. Kate looking to work inside, muscling past the jab, going to work body. Gemma can play THIS game, too and let the tenderizing begin!"
McCarthy: "You've got to LOVE fights like this! Definitely some animosity here and you're seeing it reflected in the willingness of both girls to trade."
O'Dell: "And they're trading in the proverbial phone booth right now. Winslet digging at ribs and lats and Gemma thumping right back to Kate's body. The ladies tie up, referee breaks, but Winslet right back at Arterton, again muscling inside and banging away."
Cassie: "Arterton hooking away body as well. Neither girl doing much upstairs. This is purpose stuff, Jenny. 'I'm going to be here ALL NIGHT' stuff..."
O'Dell: "Nothing pretty about any of it, but it's plenty effective. Both ladies pounding welt-raising punches into her opponent's trunk. Getting tied up, but punching free and going right back to work to the bell. Another close round, but I think Kate might be on the board..."
McCarthy: "Agreed."
Tess: "Which makes it 29-28 Gemma. Still tight through three."
ROUND FOUR:
O'Dell: "Fourth round begins with Kate forcing her way in tight again and they're back to work in close quarters. Winslet again digging body and Arterton responding in kind..."
Tess: "Let Kate do this long enough and she can break a girl down, but she might have to do it for QUITE some time to do it to a girl as sturdy as Gemma."
O'Dell: "Well, if she doesn't get it done, it won't be due to lack of effort. Winslet working hard in there, again all downstairs, and Gemma just as busy, targeting Winslet's body almost exclusively. A brutal war of attrition developing here."
McCarthy: "And I'm going to say it again, this favors Winslet. Kate is big, strong, and can hit. She's not going to be as effective having to chase a girl. But Arterton's standing right in front of her..."
O'Dell: "And getting plenty done. Gemma a THUMPING flurry to the ribs and midsection. Girls get tangled again but work free and Gems gets off again to the body, for the third time in four rounds taking control as the round goes on, outworking Kate to the body at the bell."
Cassie: "A nice answer from Arterton. You want to muscle and bang inside, I can do that. And Gemma's lead is now 39-37 through four."
ROUND FIVE:
O'Dell: "We've had four consecutive closely-fought rounds and here comes the fifth. Again Winslet pressuring, forcing inside to bang away and Arterton responding in kind. Brutal stuff going on in there, Mac!"
McCarthy: "I always LOVED being in fights like this, where it was all about imposing will. I made a lot of girls back up and back down slugging body like these two are doing now. I BROKE a few of them, too."
O'Dell: "Nobody backing down in there right now. Both girls shipping the punishment and firing away in response. Both working hard and both scoring points."
Cassie: "And you can HEAR the leather smacking flesh. They are both getting off good stuff."
O'Dell: "And Gemma rings up Kate to the head! Backs Winslet up and lands a HARD right hand! Arterton now forcing Kate to give ground, getting space and using it to step and RIP! Winslet forced to cover up now as Gemma's range-finding with that left and dropping some bombs with the right hand! Winslet retreating grudgingly, but she IS being forced back and, for the fourth time in five rounds, Gemma takes control as the round goes on and is scoring heavily at the bell!"
Tess: "Best round of the fight so far for Arterton. This one is clearly for Gemma and puts her up 49-46 through five."
ROUND SIX:
O'Dell: "Into the sixth now and Arterton pumping that left hand, using it to keep Kate at range and set up nice, clean rights..."
McCarthy: "Winslet looking a little gassed right now. She hasn't fought much and she worked VERY hard those first five rounds against a girl who's ten years younger."
O'Dell: "And Gemma's slowly turning up the heat. Backing Kate up with solid flurries, concentrating upstairs now, having invested enough in the body for the moment, anyway. Winslet mainly on the defensive, trying to counter in spots, giving ground and getting touched up."
Tess: "Gemma's a very smart girl and a very smart fighter. She's well aware that Kate's fighting fatigue now and she's taking full advantage. Nothing sloppy. Nothing hurried. She's in full control."
O'Dell: "She is, indeed, and she's not snapping jabs and dancing, either. She's firing heavy shot into Winslet in spots, scoring points and backing her rival up. Winslet still game, but definitely second-best in this stanza. There's the bell, and Gemma wins this one going away."
Cassie: "59-55 Arterton through six."
ROUND SEVEN:
O'Dell: "Into the seventh and Arterton now crowding Winslet, Gemma working in close and BANGING that body, Kate thumping back, but its Gems getting more work done..."
Tess: "What's Arterton's thinking here, Mac? She got her space last round and made a lot of hay with it, why get back in the phone booth with Winslet?"
McCarthy: "All about imposing will and breaking your opponent down."
O'Dell: "Gemma working those ribs with some nasty hooks...AND DROPS WINSLET WITH A STRAIGHT RIGHT HAND!"
McCarthy: "Set that up with the body work. Brought the guard down a little and landed the best punch of the fight!"
O'Dell: "Kate in a sitting position as the referee picks up the count at three. Four. Five. Six. Seven. And Winslet to her feet at eight. Referee gives her the mandatory and will let it continue. Arterton quickly to work with a solid flurry and KATE FIRES RIGHT BACK AND HERE WE GO AGAIN!"
Cassie: "Winslet up and tossing after the knockdown. Not going to allow any clean up!"
O'Dell: "Arterton with a hard right, Winslet a nice left hook, both ladies letting 'em go down the stretch. Plenty of heart from Kate..."
McCarthy: "I'm beginning to believe that if she gets work, she CAN be a factor at welter. The grit and desire are there and so is the power."
O'Dell: "Closing seconds tick off and they're STILL throwing after the bell! Referee jumping in between the two and sending them back to their corners! Crowd loving ALL of it!"
Tess: "Great work from Kate off the deck, but the 10-8 round puts Gemma up 69-63 with three to go."
ROUND EIGHT:
O'Dell: "Into the eighth now and Gemma working in close, pressuring Kate, perhaps looking for the finisher and there's a good short right hand from Winslet!"
McCarthy: "Sneaky punch. Set that up with a little shoulder bump, then tied Arterton up to prevent a response."
O'Dell: "Gemma shoving free, working the body now. Winslet responding in kind and another of those short right hands! Those are SOLID shots. Not hurting Gemma, but getting her attention for sure..."
Tess: "And Wiz has to be wondering why she's in there banging with a huge lead like this. He's got to have visions of Lawrence/Ruah and Holt/Scherzinger dancing in his head..."
McCarthy: "His head is empty enough that the entire Bolshoi Ballet company could dance in there!"
Cassie: "That actually wasn't bad..."
Tess: "Every once in a while, she lands one..."
O'Dell: "And Winslet again with that sneaky right hand. Very effective this round shouldering and bumping to set up punches and get Gemma out of rhythm. This is more good stuff from Winslet..."
McCarthy: "Reminds me of how Zeta-Jones works in close."
O'Dell: "Final seconds tick away and there's the bell, and Winslet's come off the deck and shown she has something left as she wins the eighth."
Cassie: "She's still going to need a knockout to win the fight, though, with the cards at 78-73."
ROUND NINE:
O'Dell: "Ninth round begins with some NICE left hands from Arterton. Gemma going back to that heavy jab now, stopping Kate in her tracks with it, setting up some good right hand follows..."
McCarthy: "This is the style Arterton can dominate Winslet with. When they're at range like this, Gemma's too slick and too quick for Kate. She can land that jab almost at will and work everything else off that."
O'Dell: "And that's precisely what she's doing right now. Gemma moving the feet, making Kate turn, keeping her on the end of that big left hand, banging home accurate, hard right hands. Winslet still game, wants to close and bang, but the heavy fire from Gemma's keeping her at bay."
Cassie: "This is one of the things I like best about Gemma. She can be effective doing a lot of different things. She can brawl, she can box, she can fight in or out, good defensively, lots of power. Lots of tools in the box."
O'Dell: "And she's using a few of them, namely the heavy jab and the big straight right to bash away on Kate Winslet. Kate still working hard to penetrate, but Gemma not having it. Closing seconds of the round sees another nice one-two from Arterton, wrapping a shutout ninth for the Front Streeter."
Tess: "88-82 with one to go."
ROUND TEN:
O'Dell: "Tenth round underway and Arterton sharp shooting with that left hand. Banging away at Winslet, who's looking just about all in, Mac..."
McCarthy: "Like I said earlier, this isn't a woman who's fought regularly. She's not used to going ten against a girl like Gemma. Arterton's worn her down and just about worn her out, but Kate not going to go quietly."
O'Dell: "Winslet showing a lot of pride, no question. Still pushing forward at Gemma, but Arterton stopping her again and again with that sledgehammer left, banging home a few rights as well, dishing out quite the beating..."
Cassie: "Winslet showing something by hanging in there, though. No quit in her, despite the thumping she's taking right now."
O'Dell: "Arterton not going all in for the stoppage at this point. May be showing Kate a modicum of respect. Not slowing down any, continuing to work, using both hands, landing good shots, but not piling on to try to finish. Winslet being backed up now as the final seconds of this one tick away. Gemma lands a final flurry and there's the bell..."
Tess: "The two exchanging a look. What's that about, Mac?"
McCarthy: "Gemma's saying 'I just kicked your a**," and Kate is responding, 'Yeah, but I'm still standing.'"
O'Dell: "And that, she is. Decision being read now, and, of course, no surprise, your winner by a wide UD10 is 'The Gravesend Gladiator', Gemma Arterton!"
AFTER:
O'Dell: "Let's go up to the ring and Tess Valmore!"
Tess: "I have our winner, Gemma Arterton, and, Gemma, an impressive win for you tonight..."
Gemma: "Thanks, Tess. What you saw in there is what I can do. I can out box a girl or I can grind her down. Whatever the game plan calls for, I can execute it."
Tess: "She hung in for all ten. Was she tougher than you thought?"
Gemma: "She can hit and she can take a punch. A lot of girls would have broken down long before she did. She can beat girls. She just can't beat ME." |
