Two tall bendy girls in a classic blonde vs. brunette matchup. Not much of a ramp up to this bout, as Katrina took this fight on short notice. Not usually a good sign to make a debut under these circumstances, but Bowden looks ready to go. “I got the call. I’m in shape. Every champion has to make her debut sometime. The short notice might even help me. There’s no way Katharine knows what she’s getting into.”
McPhee told of her opponent hours before the fight. Her response: “A blonde, leggy, ex-TV, rookie? Don’t bother telling me her name. She won’t be awake long.” The official word from Diamond Boxing Club: “We wouldn’t bring in a girl if she couldn’t fight.”
The girls touch gloves at center ring, which marks their first official meeting. Katharine with a penetrating stare, gives a little pelvic bump, to rattle her girl. Instead, Bowden gives a little giggle, clearly loving the gamesmanship. She responds by slowly moving closer to McPhee until she can whisper in her ear, “Good night, honey” and gives a peck on the cheek as she turns to her corner. McPhee now fuming as she prepares for the bell.
Round 1: Katrina Bowden shows a command of the fundamentals, gloves high, good feet, quick jab. Maybe this girl can fight after all. McPhee is weary of the surprisingly prepared blonde, taking the time to feel this girl out. Bowden takes advantage jabbing well and moving around the ring. She’s putting together punches well. Landing good leather with a solid body blow, then coming upstairs hitting flush on the cheek. Katrina in control.
Round 2: McPhee tries to start quicker this time, getting off first and not giving up ground. Now fighting on the front foot, it’s Katharine holding strong at center ring, letting Bowden flit and dart around her. In and out dancing from the blonde, but Katharine McPhee seems to know these steps. She’s connecting on the way in and the way out and shows a little smile on her face. This is the fight she expected. McPhee settling into a nice rhythm when KATRINA BOWDEN CHANGES THE TEMPO! Ducking under a hanging jab, Bowden hooks body and blasts chin, stunning McPhee and knocking her to her butt! Katharine staring into space as the ref begins the count. Slow, creaky rise from Katharine. She’s swaying a little as the ref checks her over. McPhee begging the ref to let her continue, softly repeating “I’m ok. I’ll knock her out. I’m ok. I’ll knock her out....” She gets the ok and this fight is going to continue. Katrina grinning ear to ear as she closes on her wounded prey. But she runs out of time, as McPhee is saved by the bell. The blonde rookie is stealing the show!
Round 3: Katrina Bowden is going to test her girl early, crowding in tight and CONNECTING WITH A TASTY LITTLE CHIN CHECKER! McPhee down on her side, eyes pinches shut, tummy heaving! She pushes off the mat in stages, crawling to hands and knees, using the ropes to get one foot planted, standing up at eight. Her corner shouting at her to run, jab, buy time! Katrina all smiles as she closes in to finish, when McPhee suddenly snaps back into form, grabs Katrina by the shoulders and reverses their positions, shoving Katrina into the ropes. Katharine playing possum beautifully, finding a way to stop chasing the blonde! McPhee shoves a thigh between Katrina’s legs, pinning her in place. Now processing her girl, tidy lefts and right like pistons to the body. Bowden tucking her guard in tight, trying to roll and get out of there, but Katharine has her pinned in tight. Non-stop work has Bowden sobbing when a big hook to the liver turns her legs rubbery. Katrina grabbing on for dear life as the bell saves her from more abuse.
Round 4: McPhee all smiles as she closes in for Round 4. She knows she’s got the upper hand and she’s looking to reestablish control inside. Katrina without the spring in her step has a tall order staying away from the danger in front of her. She skirts the ring on a bike with a flat tire, covering ground well, but a little wobbly as she moves. But she can’t run forever, as Katharine NAILS her with a clean lead right! Bowden’s eyes watery, her legs are a little more wobbly. She can’t stand and trade and she can’t run at this pace. Katrina forms a tight shell and wades in, trying to tie up. It’s rough and tumble shoving inside, with McPhee’s fresh legs winning the battles. Both girls throwing the occasional punch, but it’s all about jockeying for position inside, Bowden is buying the time she wanted but she’s taking more shots to the tummy and is constantly losing ground, finally taking a shove into the ropes. Katharine McPhee sets up shop and UNLOADS BOTH BARRELLS!! Contents to take whatever is open, Katharine works the body hard, until Katrina tucks her elbows tight. then McPhee goes to the head with hooks and uppercuts. Bowden’s head bouncing, throwing nothing back AND THE REF DIVES IN TO STOP IT!! Katharine exuberant, jumping up on the turnbuckle to flex for the crowd, still lost in knockout bloodlust! Katrina Bowden completely overwhelmed at the end. Katharine McPhee is your winner by bruising TKO4!
After: “I knew she couldn’t hang with me! The lesson girls should take away from this fight is that you need to prepare to stand a chance against me. Katrina Bowden is not on my level. Obviously there are some things for me to work on and she definitely gave me some trouble early. But I did what I had to do and closed her out strong.”
Bowden takes an interview on the way back to her locker room. “Watch the tape. In the second round I tagged her good. And then she… I guess she fought smarter than I did. She caught me with a couple of clean punches and I just couldn’t fight out of that. But I think I showed I could box and now people know I’m a game fighter. I’ll train hard and come back stronger next time.”
