BEFORE: "Britney hasn't lost a step," Claire defends her opponent when no defence has been solicited, "she's just lazy and fights to the level of her opposition. Given the hobos she's been in with, obviously she hasn't been stellar, but against me, I fully expect to see the Hall of Famer Britney we all know and loath. She's in great shape, but make no mistake: I'm coming into this fight to whip Britney's butt. I hope she's at her very best when it happens."

Spears smirking at the snark...pretty tough to get to Britney from the podium at this point. "I fought Claire before, you know," Britney says in rebuttal. "I know her tricks, how elusive she is. She's bigger and stronger now, but she still fights with that 'safety first' mentality. Everyone keeps talking about Summer Glau, but that won't happen here. I'll go and get Claire, make her fight...nobody's ever going to out-cute me in the ring again. Ever."

Claire in black/white two-toned, hipster fit swimsuit bottoms; matching black/white sport-halter top; left mitt black/right white; high pony with gym-rat bangs. Britney in turquoise bikini/white gloves; blonde hair loose; body looking fit and trim on the scales.

During R1: Britney aggressively forward, spit-jabbing up at Claire from crouch, driving Danes ropeside. Britney sets up Benny Briscoe style - head in Claire's chest; hands rolling hup-hup to tummy, setting up the odd healthy hook out wide to flank or ear, the odd jerking little right uppercut. Claire grimacing under pressure, trying to flurry-and-get-out, but Britney rolling on the spot, blocking the work and answering back - often with a spanking hook across gut that's got Claire stymied. Suffocating work non-stop - Britney chewing up Claire's tummy; bouncing mitts off hips/lats; punishing the arms/pecs; worrying at Claire's head via short, chopping inside clouts. One-sided bump and slug absorbed by Danes...she's cute enough in the pocket to avoid giving up homeruns, but accumulation has her frowning, recalculating at the bell.

R2: Britney looking to scoot in and resume forward pressure: Claire sidesteps her, initiates turning battle midring. Danes rotating counter-clockwise against Brit's closed stance. Spears with left shoulder pointed at Claire; left hand across gut; right loose at chest...Britney hopping into spots, snatching back swift-swiping right/lefts when Claire's punching; ducking under Claire's jab and coming up into her body with a nudging left shoulder. Active footwork and up-tempo pursuit from Britney prevent Claire from exposing Spears' back the way Glau did: Britney with the answers and fitness to execute adjustments through 2.

R3: Early pressure from Brit chases Claire to ropes...Danes bending back over ropes, pushing on Spears, trying to feed her crafty counter-uppercuts while Brit's bashing away. Minute mark: right uppercut/left hook swift-clips Britney's chin...she's staring, suddenly wobbly-butt, so Claire yanks Spears head down/reverses her into ropes! Lashing right/left to belly sits Brit groaning in ropes; torrid hup-hup barrage claims Britney's jugs...Spears floundering on the spot, facing into punches and BRITNEY GOES DOWN! Spears sitting at ropes, shaking her head as Claire jogs to neutral corner - Danes grinning, eyes sparkling as Brit takes 8. ON COMES CLAIRE! Britney hurt, discouraged, sitting in ropes in dispirited earmuff...Danes assumes wide stance and POURS the leather to Britney Spears! Claire just belting away, bouncing either hand off either hip; carving uppercuts against Brit's guard; digging sticky little hooks in behind right elbow, or in underneath right jug. Britney slumping, sagging on ropes, not offering back. Uppercut finally penetrates, straightening her up against ropes, eyes a-blinking: Claire criss-crosses mitts to exposed face, her eyes hard, lips pursed as she SCRUBS BRITNEY INTO STUPOR! Spears laying back on ropes, hands up but limp, easily punched aside and THE REF STEPS IN! Because the round's over. Claire: chest heaving; gaze sweeping Britney, searching for quit.

R4: Britney all busted up, sullen from pain, flatfooted off her stool. Claire: on her toes; rotating clockwise; left at her hip, right at her mouth, pickin' Britney apart tic-tac-toe. Britney: groggily determined; following Claire; getting her face punched back; showing right hand at forehead/left under right elbow; showing earmuff; not getting off. Danes just taking a scalpel to the problem of Britney, pattern-punching Spears, turning her right flank. Every once in a while Claire goes body, leaning in on front (left) leg, lifting a meaty left up and in CHUP!

R5: Busted-up Britney grimly off her stool...quickly jabbed to ropes as Claire turns puncher. Ripping left/right spanks tummy; crisp left hook to ear - Claire tipped over to her right, hesitating, then; sudden right uppercut scrapes face. Britney: lights dimming, sagging back against ropes, trying to protect her tender face, but Claire busily to body CHUP! CHUP! keeping Brit hurt. Danes a woman on a mission - pushing Britney upright, getting after her gut; polishing off her flanks as she stoops forward; picking her up uppercuts; carving at the jugs at Britney's laying back in swoon. Too much Claire - she's in-rhythm, letting hands go in fluid hacks, clips, swats and chops...Britney's staring, vulnerable, taking everything and THE REF STEPS IN! TKO5 in single-minded fashion, Claire Danes.

AFter: Britney in stunned astonishment, bleakly asking ref to let her continue...grinning Claire lifts mitts and struts the ring with one of the biggest wins of an already distinguished career. "I've always been able to turn puncher when I've needed to," Claire explains in postfight, still glowing with triumph. "She started strong, so we knew I had to sting her - get her respect - but when I saw how hurt she was, I just thought, 'screw respect, go for her throat!' Poured it to her and she collapsed. That's huge - bringing the quit out of Brit is a tremendous achievement for me, and let's face it: nobody else at HISC could fight, let along stop, Britney Spears. I think this fight tells you all you need to know about who's Alpha Prime in our gym. You're looking at her."
