BEFORE:
"I keep hearing questions about Decker," says a hard-eyed Serinda. "Well, this isn't ABOUT Decker. It's about ME, 'The Hottest Player In The Game', rising to the top of Front Street's lightweight division by beating Adriana Lima. And that's exactly what's about to happen."
"Look, here's the thing," says Adriana with a gorgeous smile. "I'm a top-level light now. I fight girls like Nichols and Palicki. Swan isn't at that level. She THINKS she is, but she ISN'T. And I'm about to prove it."
ROUND ONE:
O'Dell: "Back at ringside and that's Jimi Hendrix and 'Foxy Lady' booming through the arena and here comes 'The Hottest Player In The Game', Serinda Swan!"
McCarthy: "The 'Game' she's referring to must be Chinese Checkers. Because I don't PLAY Chinese Checkers, so, maybe she's the hottest player in THAT game..."
Cassie: "But I'll bet you play the heck out of a game of Beer Pong..."
McCarthy: "I happen to be GREAT at...HEY, WHAT ARE YOU IMPLYING????"
Cassie: "Nothing at all..."
O'Dell(sighing): "Swan into the ring. Helped off with the robe by Jewel and Neve to reveal that red number she and all the guys in the audience like..."
McCarthy: "What's THAT noise?"
Tess: "Mac, do you even READ the material HBO gives us?"
McCarthy: "I don't like to do a lot of prep, Walmart. I like to fly by the seat of my pants..."
Cassie: "Which is an upset. Because that actually requires her to keep her pants ON..."
McCarthy: "SHUT IT, SCABBO!"
O'Dell(sighing again): "The song is 'Nightcall' by Kavinsky, the theme music for the gorgeous lady on her way to the ring, the former Queen of the Ice Hotel, Adriana Lima!"
Tess: "Lima's really become a factor in the lightweight division since she joined Odds and Ends. This is a girl that, two years ago today was 1-6 career, and the win was over Carrie Prejean..."
McCarthy: "Wins over Prejean shouldn't even COUNT..."
Tess: "Since then, she's beaten Upton, Brook, Lively, Arterton, Refaeli, Swanepoel, and Decker. And she's given good accounts of herself against girls like Nichols, Palicki, and Torv..."
McCarthy: "And those last two are GREAT fighters..."
Cassie: "Um, the FIRST one's wearing the BELTS..."
O'Dell: "Adriana into the ring, helped off with the robe by the O&E corner to reveal a canary yellow bikini that's turning more than a few heads. Ladies about ready. Let's get some picks. Tess favors Serinda. Mac?"
McCarthy: "This Lima kid, she's no Palicki, but I think she's the real deal. And since Swan's like most of the rest of the Dancing Hookers, overrated, I think Lima's going to put yet another loss on Weirdo's lightweight division."
O'Dell: "Cassie?"
Cassie: "I agree with Tess!"
McCarthy: "UN..."
O'Dell(quickly): "There's the bell for the first, and neither lady wasting any time. The brunettes are right after one another, toe to toe and banging away early..."
McCarthy: "Pure psychology..."
Tess: "How so, Mac?"
McCarthy: "These are two type rivals, no question, and this is all about 'I'm going to impose my will on her.' Toss everything else out the window right now, because that's what this is all about..."
O'Dell: "And neither woman willing to take a step back. Lima using the left to set up the right at range. Swan slide stepping right and banging back with both hands. Not a lot of artistry going into any of this. Neither woman hard to find. And, as Mac points out, neither is TRYING to be hard to find..."
McCarthy: "Correct, Jenny. Because the point here is to establish that 'I'm right here and I'm going to be here ALL night.'"
O'Dell: "Swan a hard right hand and Lima fires right back with a nice flurry. Serinda a left-right to the head and Adriana responds again. High work rate from both women in this first round. No idea if they can keep this up all night, but the disrobe showed they're both in GREAT shape. Final seconds tick off. One more solid exchange and there's the bell. Close, but Lima got a bit more done."
Cassie: "And takes the 10-9 lead into the second."
ROUND TWO:
O'Dell: "Back in action in round two and the ladies right back at it! Toe to toe action as the brunettes trade heavy shell. Adriana looking very comfortable banging away here, and Swan not willing to give an inch. Adriana really finding the range, though, nailing Swan with that right hand..."
McCarthy: "Lima putting punches together well. Getting more done than Serinda. Slowly starting to take control..."
O'Dell: "That she is. Adriana looking every bit the Ice Hotel Queen, landing hard, crisp shot, squaring Swan up and starting to back her up some. Serinda still gamely struggling for every inch of canvas, but, right now, Adriana more effective on these terms, and it's starting to tell. Swan being forced backward, taking heavy leather. Lima landing more and better shot as the round goes on..."
Cassie: "Swan's the more athletic of the two fighters. She needs to move more, not just let Adriana square her up like this..."
O'Dell: "And that's just what Lima's doing, squaring Swan up and really lathering her up now. Serinda giving a lot of ground now. Adriana getting plenty of work done. Scoring in bunches as we come down the stretch. Swan backed into the ropes, still firing back, but definitely taking the worst of it to the bell."
Tess: "Great round for Lima, and she's extended her lead to 20-18."
ROUND THREE:
O'Dell: "Just about ready for the third now and Serinda got a little talking to in the corner between rounds..."
Tess: "It wasn't quite 'You're blowing it, kid', but it was along those lines..."
O'Dell: "Let's see if it does any good. There's the bell and Lima back to work and Swan standing right in with her banging again. Toe to toe for the third straight round now, Adriana using that long left hand to set up the dangerous right, punching well in combination. Swan holding canvas this round. Giving as good as she gets."
Cassie: "Swan is plenty sturdy. She can stand up to Lima's shell as well as Lima can stand up to hers, but the difference early has been Adriana's effectiveness on these terms, which has been greater than Serinda's."
O'Dell: "Swan looking to change that here in the third. A little busier this round. A little more aggressive. Adriana still deadly accurate, still squaring Serinda up very well, but Swan firing back at greater volume now."
McCarthy: "This is fun to watch. And it's fun to be involved in, really, at least it was for me. I always loved to stand in front of a girl and bang away, and just wait for her to flinch. Because when that happened, I knew I had her."
O'Dell: "Nobody flinching out there right now, but both girls doing plenty of banging. Good, crisp, clean shots being landed. Nobody hurt, but both girls have to be feeling it, because there's plenty behind most of that leather. Final seconds tick away as they keep BANGING away, and there's the bell. Serinda's on the board."
Tess: "Close, but Swan able to bang out the points. 29-28 through three."
ROUND FOUR:
O'Dell: "Back to work in the fourth and Lima NAILS Swan with a right hand! Serinda fires back but Adriana ANOTHER clean right and Swan may be buzzed. Lima coming forward now, letting the hands go, backing Swan up...STAGGERS HER WITH A LEFT HOOK! Swan in trouble and Lima going all in, battering Serinda back into the ropes..."
McCarthy: "The Ice Hotel has done wonders for this girl. When she first came to the FCBA, she had a reputation for being soft. Not anymore. This kid is a KILLER."
O'Dell: "And she's going IN for the kill, pummeling Swan along the ropes. Rocking her with another right hand. Serinda covering up as Adriana pounds away. Swan being battered as the referee looks on closely..."
Cassie: "She's ready to go, and Lima is dialing in..."
O'Dell: "And Swan fires back and rocks Lima! Serinda unleashing hell Gatti-style! Swan exploding off the ropes, firing everything in the arsenal! Adriana wobbed...AND DOWN SHE GOES!"
McCarthy: "Unbelievable!"
O'Dell: "Swan to a neutral corner. Referee starts the count at three, four, five, six, seven...Lima to her feet. Going to take the mandatory. Referee going to allow it to continue. Swan quickly after Lima, lands a hard right hand, but there's the bell! End of the fourth, and Swan steals the round late!"
McCarthy: "10-9, because Lima was running away with the round before the knockdown, but 10-9 is enough to tie the fight at 38 through four."
ROUND FIVE:
O'Dell: "Fifth round begins and Swan immediately going to work. She's all over Adriana, forcing Lima onto the defensive, forcing her to retreat for the first time in the fight..."
Cassie: "Lima still hurt. Doesn't have the legs back and Swan knows it. Serinda was in deep trouble about two minutes ago, and this fight has done a complete 180!"
O'Dell: "And Swan is putting a hurting on Adriana! Lima battered back into the ropes, trying to fire back, sliding along the ropes now, looking to get back to open country, but Swan keeping her pinned, hammering away. Lima tying up now, holding Swan's arms down. Referee breaks and Adriana jabbing back, but Swan suppresses her with a barrage from both hands..."
McCarthy: "Swan not sloppy. Clinical. Looking for the finisher..."
O'Dell: "And splits 'em with a right that turned Lima's knees to rubber. Adriana stumbling along the ropes, Swan now going all in! Lima hanging on desperately. Referee looking very closely. Serinda pounding punches off Lima's guard, goes body, then works back up. LEFT HOOK! Lima went rubbery again! Referee not going to allow much more of this. Lima almost LUNGES forward and grabs Swan, ties her up. Hangs on as the referee pries them apart. Swan a good right hand, but there's the bell! Lima survives, but barely!"
Tess: "And that was gritty stuff from Adriana. Most of the girls in this division don't get out of that round. Swan wins it, though, and she has her first lead, 48-47."
ROUND SIX:
O'Dell: "We're into the sixth and Lima snapping a good right hand that NAILS Serinda. Swan eats ANOTHER right...and Adriana follows with a nice combination!"
McCarthy: "Where is this girl GETTING this from?"
O'Dell: "Swan passive, defensive, and Lima letting the hands go lands a solid right that backs Serinda up..."
McCarthy: "Swan may be punched out after that last round. I think that's what might have happened to Lima late in the fourth, and it may have happened to Serinda in the fifth, and Adriana's taking full advantage."
O'Dell: "Swan snapping jabs, moving the feet, but Lima walking through the lefts, squaring Serinda up, and landing clean right hands. Swan willingly giving ground now, trying to manage this aggression from a somehow revived Adriana. Lima, however, boring in, locating with the left, banging home the right, turning the momentum of this fight again...and WOBBLING Swan with a right hand!"
Cassie: "If anybody was still harboring any doubts about Adriana Lima, and I have no idea why anyone WOULD have been, this ought to put an end to all THAT..."
O'Dell: "Lima now STALKING. Swan in retreat, moving her feet as well as she has all night, circling back, making Lima chase, but Adriana bringing Serinda to battle again and again and getting work done. Sends her REELING with a right hook! Lima zeroing in and letting shell fly! Swan now backed to the ropes and taking a barrage of leather! Referee looking closely again! Lima a short left hook that hurt Swan...and there's the bell! What a rally by Adriana Lima!"
Tess: "57-57 through six. But, I'm getting the feeling we aren't going to need cards. This one is probably coming down to the last woman standing."
ROUND SEVEN:
O'Dell: "We're ready for the seventh and Lima looking to consolidate. Adriana right after Swan and now Serinda firing back and HERE WE GO! Right back to the way this one started. Toe to toe and no one backing up a step..."
Cassie: "This has been a struggle for control from the opening bell, and they're still at it."
O'Dell: "And neither woman willing to cede to the other. HEAVY leather landing on both brunette beauties...AND DOWN GOES LIMA! Swan a right hand and Lima dropped to her back!"
McCarthy: "Timed it right over the left jab. Lima's going to do well to get up from that."
O'Dell: "Referee's count at three, four, five, six, seven...and Lima back to her feet. She'll take the mandatory and on comes Swan. Serinda immediately driving Adriana back to the ropes and going to work. Lima again in the tight guard and Swan buffeting her head back and forth as she bounces punches off the guard. Lima blocking most of them, but some are getting through. Lima jabbing back, doing enough to keep the referee at bay, but Swan is cleaning up in a major way. Going body now to try to bring the guard down..."
Tess: "We haven't seen much body work today, have we, Mac?"
McCarthy: "No, because they're too busy trying to decapitate one another!"
O'Dell: "Serinda back upstairs, splits the gloves with a right. Lima flurries back, but Swan quickly suppresses with withering fire. Serinda bashing away at Lima right to the bell! But Adriana still standing after seven."
Tess: "But the 10-8 round for Swan makes it 67-65 through seven."
ROUND EIGHT:
O'Dell: "Eight round begins with Adriana going after Swan! Now it's Lima slopping it Gatti-style and Serinda in tactical retreat..."
McCarthy: "Where is this girl getting this from???"
O'Dell: "Swan willing to give ground, moving the feet, jabbing and circling, boxing Adriana for the first time all night. Lima boring right through Serinda's defenses and swinging away. Swan not going to get in the trenches with her and trade..."
Cassie: "This is good, tactical stuff from Swan. Used a lot of energy last round. Wants to conserve some for the home stretch anyway, so she's not going to go all in with Lima and take chances."
O'Dell: "Serinda trying to manage this aggression somewhat, and, while she's avoiding a lot of the heavy shell Adriana's throwing, Lima's scoring plenty with both hands. She's landed some good right hands in these exchanges, even if Swan is keeping them short."
McCarthy: "And, while Swan's avoiding the punishment she'd take if she stood in there and slugged and definitrely conserving energy, she's not only losing the round, she's ceding control of the fight back to Lima..."
O'Dell: "And Adriana more than happy to take advantage. Stalking Swan aggressively and scoring with both hands right to the bell."
Tess: "And with the win in the eigth, Lima closes to 76-75. Anyone's fight with two rounds to go."
ROUND NINE:
O'Dell: "Six minutes to go and this one's been so much fun you don't ever want it to end. Lima again aggressive. Swan now willing to stand in and bang back. Lima a good right hand...AND SWAN DROPS HER!"
McCarthy: "Quick left/right from Serinda! Right hook off the jab is what did it. Sent Lima to her knees!"
O'Dell: "Count at three. Four. Five. Six. Lima up at seven. Referee gives her the mandatory and will let it continue. Swan forward immediately. Hooking the body now, backing Lima up...AND DOWN GOES ADRIANA!"
McCarthy: "Straight right that time. Sent Lima right to her back!"
O'Dell: "Count at three. Four. Five. Six. Seven. And Lima to her feet at eight..."
McCarthy: "I don't know what more Swan can hit this kid with. Maybe her stool..."
O'Dell: "Referee going to give the mandatory again. Going to allow it to continue. Swan not wasting any time going after Lima. Backing her up with a big flurry. Adriana wobbly...AND DOWN AGAIN! Right hook Swan spills Lima to her right side!"
Cassie: "No three knockdown rule at Asylum..."
O'Dell: "Which is why the referee is counting again. Three. Four. Five. Six. Seven. And Lima up AGAIN at eight!"
Tess: "Forget the stool. Swan will need something heavier than that, apparently."
O'Dell: "Referee gives the mandatory and will let it continue. Swan forward again and Lima winging away at her! Serinda makes with the feet and circles away and Adriana on the OFFENSIVE after three knockdowns!"
McCarthy: "To quote Vince Lombardi, 'What the hell is GOING ON out here?'"
O'Dell: "Lima on the attack, locating with the left, then loading up on the right. Swan not having any. She is not going to stand in there..."
Tess: "And I don't blame her. She's basically won the fight at this point."
O'Dell: "And that's exactly what she's thinking as Lima goes all in on the attack. Swan giving ground, jabbing, circling, making Adriana chase. Lima winging away right to the bell!"
Tess: "10-6, Mac?"
McCarthy: "Absolutely."
Tess: "Which makes it 86-81 with only three minutes to go."
ROUND TEN:
O'Dell: "We're into the final round now and Swan is all about movement. She's bouncing and misbehaving behind the left jab. Give her credit for still having the legs to do this in the tenth round of what's been a brutal slugfest..."
McCarthy: "And speaking of credit, Lima's still after her. She's been knocked down five times and we're in the last round and she's still coming."
O'Dell: "Swan giving ground, circling, keeping the exchanges short. Lima taking chances, which is what she has to do...AND DOWN GOES SWAN! Lima caught her with a right hand and Serinda dropped to her knees!"
McCarthy: "I repeat, 'What the hell is GOING ON out here?'"
O'Dell: "The referee is counting. Three. Four. Five. Six. Seven. Eight. Swan to her feet. Referee going to give her the mandatory. And allow this to continue. Lima going all in in a big way. Drives Swan to the ropes and goes to work. Serinda covering up, elbows tight, gloves high. Very wobbly..."
McCarthy: "Lima needs the stoppage and Swan needs the bell..."
O'Dell: "And Lima ROCKS Swan with a right hand! Nails her again with a left hook! Serinda in deep trouble and still most of a minute left! Lima swinging away with everything she has. Has to take Swan out of there. Serinda just trying to hang on! Referee looking in closely. Lima a BIG right hand staggers Swan again! Adriana loading up on everything. Swan ROCKED by a left hook. Wobbles, but stays on her feet!"
Cassie: "It looks like Lima who needs to use a stool at this point..."
O'Dell: "Adriana measuring Serinda now. Swan hanging on grimly. BIG right hand Lima jellies Swan's legs again! Lima a left/right to the head...AND THERE'S THE BELL! It's over! Swan survives the barrage and ends this thing on her feet. Barely."
Cassie: "Can you say 'Fight Of The Year Candidate'?"
O'Dell: "Not going to be any doubt about this decision, but to tell you how much Swan had left at the end of that round, she's not even getting off her stool for the reading of it. It's unanimous, as expected, 94-91 for 'The Hottest Player In The Game', Serinda Swan!"
McCarthy: "And Lima across the ring with some attitude for Swan..."
Tess: "Intercepted by Neve Campbell, who appears to be politely suggesting Ms. Lima go back to her corner..."
Cassie: "No question after what we just saw that Adriana's tough as nails, but she doesn't want any of a no-rules fight with Neve...Does she, Mac?"
McCarthy: "I don't know what you're referring to...and SHUT UP, SCABBO!"
AFTER:
O'Dell: "Order restored in the ring, as the Odds and Ends corner quickly got their fighter under control. So let's go on up to the ring and Tess Valmore!"
Tess: "I have our winner, Serinda Swan, and I don't have to tell you this, Swanny, but that was a pretty good fight..."
Serinda(still out of breath): "She's tough, Tess. I had her ready about five times, and she just wouldn't go. But, here's the thing, I'm tougher and I'm better and I proved it."
Tess: "You broke the streak. Front Street hadn't won a big fight since June, but now it has, and the girl who got the job done was you..."
Serinda(smiling): "Lightweight is the biggest division at Front Street, so, you can get lost in the shuffle. But, I suspect I got noticed tonight." |
