TESS VALMORE

Tractorpull Magazine specializes in lightweights and welters. We leave the flyweights and bantams to other publications. Boxing World covers all weights and their year end rewards covered all weights. We had already made most of our selections prior to Boxing World publishing theirs and we have some of the same awards. By the way, getting beat to the rewards by Boxing World cost me a large part of my Christmas bonus. Thanks a lot Smackey

LIGHTWEIGHTS

UPSET OF THE YEAR SMULDERS/CUOCO Cuoco is considered one of the elite lightweights. In two years prior to this bout, she was 9-3 with one of her four unified titles coming in 2013. Smulders, on the other hand, had only twelve fights in six years and was 3-9 during that period of time. Where Cuoco is considered elite with Hall Of Fame potential, Smulders is a journey-woman. Somebody for a stay busy fight. Smulders shocked the FCBA with a second round knockout. How big the upset? After the fight, I had Cuoco still ranked at number three in the lightweights. Smulders wasn’t even on our radar. Boxing World had Cuoco at nine. Where was Smulders? Way down at 39

KNOCKOUT OF THE YEAR PALTROW/ PERRY This bout was Paltrow's fourth visit to the Asylum. She had lost all three of the previous bouts, never lasting through the sixth. Perry came into bout winning seven of her last eight. The fight lasted about a minute when Perry stepped right into a Paltrow right hand and the fight was over

FIGHT OF THE YEAR LIMA/ SWAN I have to agree with Boxing World. A fight that went the distance with each fighter being hurt continuously and both going down, Lima five times. In the end, it was Swan desperately holding on to finish and get the decision

DISAPPOINTMENT OF THE YEAR JESSICA BIEL I constantly criticize Theron, but she had a winning year. Biel, on the other hand, managed to lose four of five and lose them all by KOs. When a Hall Of Fame fighter, still in her prime, loses four out of five fights by KOs, what can you say other than it’s a huge disappointment. Expectations so high and performance so low

COMEBACK OF THE YEAR. TAYLOR COLE In 2013, she fought top fighters, going 0-3 in losing to Theron, Palicki and Helfer. Rebounded this year to 3-0 with wins over Peregrym, Theron, and Regan

LIGHTWEIGHT OF THE YEAR TAYLOR COLE Once again I agree with Boxing World. Cole with Knockout wins over three top ten fighters gets my nod. Cole rose to our number two lightweight. Interestingly, the new champion in November ignored Cole choosing to fight a lower ranked fighter.

WELTERWEIGHTS.

UPSET OF THE YEAR KAJLICH/ REGAN I think this was the upset of the year, not only in the welters but in the entire FCBA. Kajlich, a 36 year old brunette, had had only one fight and lost that. She was going against Regan who was ranked number two by Tractorpull and three by Boxing World. When you heard that Kajlich had KOed Regan in less than three, you had to think it was a big mistake. But there it was. Kajlich had won her first fight. She hasn’t had one since. Wonder why

KNOCKOUT OF THE YEAR. LOKEN/ SOBIESKI As in the lightweight KO of the year, it happened at the Asylum and it happened to a Front Street fighter. In the three previous years Loken was barely active as was 1-4. Leelee, on the other hand, since she joined Front street in 2010 was 11-2 and was ranked sixth. A little over a minute into the first round and Loken right found Leelee’s jaw and the fight was over as Leelee was counted out face down on the canvas.

DISAPPOINTMENT OF THE YEAR ALI LANDRY Takes the award for the second year in a row. After an 0-4 2012 record, we had high hopes she would bounce back. The Hall of Fame member won a bout against a model and then lost two, both by KOs. That’s six losses out of seven fights with five KO losses. She is now 40 years of age. Time to go?

FIGHT OF THE YEAR. ARTETON/ THERON. I may be a shaky ground here, this could have been at lightweight but we considered it to be welter or catch weight. Thirteen rounds of blistering fighting. Both continually hurt. In the end Arteton still couldn’t win two consecutive rounds over the older woman. She got the win on a unanswered knockdowns. Could it have gone another full round? Who knows

WELTERWEIGHT OF THE YEAR. AMANDA RIGHETTI I agree with Boxing World that Amanda again is the welter of the year. That said, we take a different look. I consider her to be a very good fighter in a very weak and not very active division. Sure she has beaten some lightweights, but she is a big girl, bigger than any lightweight. She is supposed to beat them. Early in her career. when she fought at lightweight she was a 5O% fighter. We will go more into the state of the welters in our upcoming year end lightweight and welter rankings.
