TESS VALMORE
We normally post our rankings after every other PPV, but as the new year approaches we decided to post a final 2013 rankings. To remind everyone, our rankings are unconventional. The number one fighter can be someone other than the champion. There have been numerous instances where the champion was clearly not the best fighter. Also we require a fighter to be active to be in the top ten. If a fighter is not in the top ten, we could care less how often they fight. Once they reach the top ten, however, they must fight or at least challenge within 3 PPVs or ninety days whichever is longer. No fighter will retain a ranking by avoiding the ring
LIGHTWEIGHTS
1. TAYLOR COLE. She was named the lightweight of the year by both Boxing World Magazine and Tractorpull. She is a special case. She came into the rankings late in the year after 3 straight knockout wins over top ten welters and lightweights. She last fought in November and did not challenge in December. We are somewhat concerned over her future activity. She is ranked in both the welters and lightweights. She definitely needs to challenge or fight as lightweight in the next PPV. She can stay ranked in both divisions but it is going to require a great deal of activity
2. JENNIFER LAWRENCE Was 4-1-1 for 2013 and 11-3 over the last two years. She last fought in August, but avoided being dropped by issuing a number of challenges in late November, none of which were accepted
3, YVONNE STRAHOVSKI She started 2013 at the champ and ended the year as the champ. She was 5-4 for the year. She won the title in the December PPV, but then spit the bit in the Lookout PPV losing for the fifth time to Winstead
4. RACHEL NICHOLS She lost the lightweight title in the last PPV, but she is still Queen of the Ice Hotel.
5. ERICA DURANCE Erica is on a six fight win streak with her last win coming in November when she KOed Jessica Biel. Did not fight or challenge in December
6. MARY ELIZABETH WINSTEAD Was 5-2 for the year, ending 2013 with three straight victories including wins over Cuoco and Strahovski. Why is she not ahead of Strahovski? We consider it to be a style factor that makes her a winner against Laura but not against other women. Last fight, Lookout December PPV
7. KALEY CUCUO Held the title early in the year and spent most of 2013 in the top three or four. Two late season losses, one to Winstead and the other, the shocking loss to Smulders drops her to seven. Last fought in November. Did not challenge in December
8. ADRIANNE PALICKI Went 3-2 for the year with her last win coming in November when she KOed Lima. Did not challenge in December
9. GEMMA ARTERTON She enters the top ten for the first time after going 5-1 for the year and on the strength of her marathon win over Theron in the December PPV. She may have an activity problem due to the size of her stable and managements policy of giving all members an equal number of fights
10 MISSY PEREGRYM She briefly held the lightweight title in 2013. She ended the year on the downside with three straight losses including a KO loss to Joanne Kelly in the December Lookout PPV.
WHO DROPPED OUT
MARIA MENOUNOS She hasn’t fought since August but she did challenge in late November. The challenge didn’t save her however, as while she wasn’t fighting Gemma Arterton was. Arterton’s entry into the top ten cost Menounos her ranking
WELTERWEIGHTS
Despite all attempts to vitalize this division, it remains the weakest in the FCBA. When we talk about this division, we have all kinds of names thrown at us to prove this division is good. Strangely, none of those names show up when it comes time for a PPV. In December, including the PPV, Lookout’s PPV and the upcoming Asylum PPV, there were or will be 40 fights. How many were at welter? ONE. In October through the end of the year there were or will be 98 bouts on the various PPVs. Of those 98 only 10 were welter. If you don’t count Righetti and Theron bouts the number drops to six. There are very few all around fighters in this division, which is filled with inactive or aged members. We do a top ten only because the feeling is, you have to have a top ten
1. AMANDA RIGHETTI She was the Welter Of The Year in both Boxing World and Tractorpull. She is on a seven fight wins streak and is given a big push by stable management. If she doesn’t suffer a letdown, she will be in the Hall Of Fame, but it is a story of the huge fish in the little pond. Her current win ratio is 72% however in her early career when she was fighting at lightweight, her win ratio was a little over 50%. It wasn’t until she moved to welter that her career really took off. Don’t misunderstand me. I am a fan of Amanda’s, we are just trying to put things in perspective as we see them
2.TAYLOR COLE Our number one lightweight is also our number two welter since she whacked both Regan and Theron. Cole has fought Righetti twice before when Amanda was fighting at lightweight and beat her both times by fourth round KOs. Her last fight at welter was in November, She didn’t challenge for the December PPV It appears due to our activity policy, she is going to have to chose which division she wants. As for welter, she needs to fight of challenge by the February PPV
3, CASSIDY FREEMAN It’s all about competition. Cassidy is 2-3 for the year but she fought nothing, but top ten competition. She had wins over Upton and Bloodgood who she beat in the December PPV
4. LEELEE SOBIESKI Is 4-1 for the year. While she did beat Cat Bell, it all about the competition. Her record is better than Freeman’s but her competition wasn’t at the level of Freeman’s
5 ,KATE UPTON 5-3 on the year with wins over Bell and Landry both of whom are on the downhill side. Lost to Amanda and Freeman. She last fought in November. Didn’t challenge for the December PPV
6. CHARLIZE THERON With a year’s record of 6-5 and having gone through the Crusade, she is still hanging in there. Her 13 round decision loss to Arterton in December PPV cost her a couple slots
7, MOON BLOODGOOD The former champ was 2-3 for the year. Her losses were to Freeman, Theron and Righetti. Her loss to Freeman came in the December PPV
8, CATHERINE BELL We are getting into desperate territory now. This 45 year old Hall of Fame member was 4-4 for the year but two of her wins were in a seniors tournament and her win over Theron was largely due to the psychological shock of her betrayal
THOSE WHO SHOULD BE RANKED BUT AREN’T DUE A LACK OF ACTIVITY
GENA LEE NOLIN KATRINA LAW NADIA BJORLIN
THOSE WHO WE DROPPED OUT In our last rankings we included BROOKLYN DECKER and DANIELA RUAH to fill in a top ten. That was a mistake. While these two are considered lightweight/ welterweights, the activity has been almost completely in the lightweight division. We are therefore moving them back to lightweight until we see some activity at welter |
