Before: Williams snakebitten in her last few outtings, but outclassing Landry every step of the way keeps Vanessa in demand, Oscillating between the senior’s circuit and regular comp—Van takes on another heavy handed puncher in Lange, but isn’t impressed. “Jessica is just too slow at this point, I’m still a player—I’ve got world class skills and I’m saying up front, no disrespect intended, this will be an easy fight for me.” Funny, Lange feels a little disrespected. Vanessa in navy bikini top, light blue bikini bottoms, blonde highlighted curks—Lange in white sports bra, white aerobics bottoms.

During R1: Williams more flat footed now than in her prime, but still with that masterful upper body movement, turning her left shoulder into Jessica, leaning back, or bending at the waist to make Lange miss, and striking back with that coiled right hand counter. Kate in the round, Williams swaying the left in a lazy O, comes over the top with a sudden spearing right hand, bashing back Jessica’s head and putting the blonde in big trouble, All Williams in the final seconds as she palms up on Lange’s biceps and swats clouting lefts and rights across the blonde’s blank face at the bell.

R2,3: Lange very composed, soaks it up, shakes it off, and puts together back to back rounds of  grinding pressure, Getting her body on Vanessa, Lange uses her strength well, tieing up the brunette’s arms, walking her back holding and hitting with a smothering, methodical attack, Williams slogging it out inside for the most part, moving her head well inside, but isn’t busy enough to discourage Kange—Vanessa dropping both rounds.

R4: Vanessa using a little more lateral movement, stepping to the right, stepping in and out with the jab, has Lange following her around the ring, Late in the first minute, Vanessa walks Lange into another beefy right hand bouncing it hard off Jessica’s jaw and admiring her handiwork as Lange staggers away with jellied thighs, Williams till moving right, comes in at an oblique angle over Jessica’s left shoulder, hammering hooks to the teeth and chopping right hands to the jaw as Jessica reels to the ropes. Good final minute for Lange as she leans against the ropes and trades effectively to keep the referee from evening thinking about stopping it,

R5: War breaks out as Lange breaks out the piledriver jab, making solid contact with Vanessa’s head and freezing the brunette for a classic one-two right up the middle, Williams scooting to her butt, shakes her head and isn’t the same getting ti her feet, Lange lumbering in, getting her weight over that lead leg and RIPPING booming hooks to the belly and torso of Williams as Vanessa covers up. Williams hurting, bobbing and weaving, makes Jessica miss wildly over the top—Lance swinging herself off balance, Williams pivoting and NAILING Jessica with a picturesque right hands from the side, Lange now wobbly butt, looking to clinch and Vanessa calmly retreats, bending side to side to walk Jessica into murderous uppercuts to the body. Lange plunging past Vanessa face first into the ropes seems on the verge of collapse when the bell rings.

R6,7,8: Vintage Vanessa Williams as she stays outside, boxes and takes Jessica Lange apart in round by round surgical procedures, Williams with just enough circular movement, working iff the jab, has Lange’s face red and raw from crisp jabs, crosses and hooks, Vanessa leaning in, lets her hands play back and forth across Jessica’s face, stepping away leaving Lange blinking in a fog. Lange gambling occasionally to land to the body, but it’s always one shot, then a clinch from Williams who holds for the breaks. Fight ends with Lange going wobbly butt, hands dropping, Williams stepping to the right, cracking a right hand off Jessica’s jaw, then stepping and popping rights to drive Lange to the ropes in a daze. Bell sounds as Vanessa loads up to hurt Jessica and the ref jumps in to stop any late nonsense. Unanimous duke Vanessa Williams.

After: Lange landing the big right hand, but Vanessa surviving it and turning in another fine performance, Maybe not an “easy” fight, but Williams proving she still has the tools to take certain girls apart and with clever management could indeed maneuver into the Seniors title picture, Lange finishing on her feet, but after failing to finish off her prey in the 5thm had the look of a beaten woman down the stretch.
