BEFORE: "It's all about the fighting," Lilly smiles in prefight. "Claire and her people have been total pro's; the press has mainly been interested in the tactics and training that's going into the fight...you're just not seeing all the other crap that goes along with most promotions. It's just me against the best boxer of our generation, and I can't wait to see how we'll compete together. At bantam, Claire's healthier, more robust - without the dangerous weight-cut to flyweight, she's shown she can take a good shot, so I'm not counting on hurting her or taking her out. I have to focus on being the better woman, minute-in, minute-out."

Danes also bright-eyed, feeling the moment. "Lilly's been on my mind ever since I moved up," Claire admits at podium. "She's the girl who took the division away from Dushku and kept it out of reach. She's smart-pressure the likes of which no one had ever seen before. If you want a certain status at bantam, you need to prove yourself against Evangeline Lilly, and only great fighters have done that. It's time for me to step up - yet again - and get to yet another level of proficiency in the sport of boxing. It's all about legacy for me now - cementing my reputation. R2: Lilly with the same up-tempo peppering pursuit - mission is just to harass Claire out of her comfort zone, get her slugging. Midway through, it all comes together: Danes standing her ground, rolling hup-hup to Lilly's midsection...Evangeline absorbs, jumps into hook-to-chin and BLONDE GIRL DOWN! Claire up quickly, but frazzled, spooked: Lilly smiling en route to neutral corner. Upon resumption, Claire elects to dig in...Lilly more than happy to square up and reduce the pocket. Danes bobbing and rolling, showing Lilly that lead left shoulder: Evangeline jab-jab-jabbing Claire's front; sweeping the palm-down right in behind Claire's left elbow; finishing up hooks-on-tits. Danes systematically beaten, managing her chin fairly well, but down the stretch, Lilly digs a heartbreaking hook to sternum that cramps blonde girl up, turning Claire's right flank into ropes. Lilly: weight on left plant leg; batting left hooks against Claire's left shoulder/ear/eye and BLONDE GIRL DOWN! Danes staring, flushed as she eases her right knee to canvas, relieving pressure. Lilly nodding in approval at the compliance: Claire surrendering a 10-7 second...blonde girl has her work cut out early.

R3: Work's cut out: Claire gets to work. Closed stance - left shoulder pointed at Lilly. Right hand near chin; left at hip, distributing a constant stiff, sticking jab. CRISP dip-and-pivots clockwise - Claire tucking her chin behind left shoulder and snapping off her turns, keeping the fight midring. Lilly frowning with concentration, hands up, palms out, trying to bat Claire's poke down and get in on her. Danes not hurting Evangeline, but blonde girl with the initiative - occasionally changing directions to pivot counter-clockwise, then dip in close to lap brunette gut hup-hup-hup - coming off-body to hook Lilly's chin upon departing. Bell: women exchanging hard, thoughtful eye-contact as Claire answers adversity with a shutout.

R4: Grim chessmatch settles in - Claire initiating turning battle, changing levels, working behind the jab, dipping in and out to lap at Lilly's gut. Evangeline spitting her own jab, weaving in, hunting for Claire's ribcage with either hand.

R5: Same pace and approach - women executing at the very highest levels of skill in the celebrity game. Claire's jab a constant nuisance, frequently poking Lilly onto her back (right) foot...blonde nibbling at her brunette's face/left eye. Lilly landing loud right hands to blonde left-side ribs, but Claire doing a good job behind that left shoulder of hers, rolling most of Vangie's work. Offensively, Danes neatly in and out off her jab - lowering her head, rolling her shoulders and tearing up Lilly's tummy. Vangie's core as well toned as any in boxing, but meat is piglet-pink through 5.

R6: Same again: Lilly hunting Claire, trying to draw her into sustained exchanges; Danes denying these terms with sharp pivots, crafty punching, pre-emptive jabs. No one shot hurting Lilly, but Claire's whittling away, investing in body-shots; dropping the odd hesitation right cross; occasionally dipping that left shoulder to really get ripping leverage on left uppercuts to body. Bell: Claire making hard eye contact...she's coming back strong after that disastrous second. "Don't look now sports-fans," announcer for BLONDE! Net gushes, "Claire Danes has just evened up this fight!"

R7: Same again. Not like Lilly's getting rocked or embarrassed, but she's clearly being manipulated around the ring. Claire with weight forward over left leg, dragging that left foot when she slide-pivots to her right; dip-and-pivoting to her left with chin tucked tight behind left shoulder. Outside it's all Claire - her left jab nibbling, sampling, tapping at Lilly's face. Inside it's all Claire as she rolls-hands to tummy, then hook-and-pivots to freedom...Lilly's best chances come as Claire's moving in or out. Claire's best punch: hesitation left uppercuts to body. She's getting these shots off feints - dipping the left shoulder, then popping hips-right, really snatching at Lilly's ribs or tummy-meat "PAK!"

R8: Lilly doubling up the jab, getting rough with Claire. Brunette getting hands on blonde biceps or shoulders, shoving Danes out of her stance. Lilly gambling more - leaping in with hooks swept up and around from the knee; brawling her way forward. Claire hits ropes for the first time in a long while, sliding along to her right with Lilly in hot pursuit. Evangeline skidding punches off the top of Claire's head, unable to get good looks at chin, so she concentrates on body - reaching in to brace Danes against ropes. Lilly showing her strength in pinning blonde girl down: Evangeline's right foot well back, bunching up the right buttock as she presses Claire to cables...smothering tactics effective for Lilly through 9.

R9: Claire works hard to put down the uprising, retaking initiative in the 9th. Starts out with Claire doing business from wheeling pivots midring, keeping Lilly defensive. Down the stretch, Danes really gets to Lilly with those dip-and-rip left uppercuts to body, finally winning a cringe of respect and forching Evangeline to back off. Lilly wincing, issuing a don't-hurt-me jab in retreat...Claire walking her down, flaring a wide hook up off the hip to take Lilly clean to mouth...EVANGELINE'S ROCKED! Lilly stumble-bums to ropes, eyes blinking in shock: she covers up hurt, putting her tummy on sale for the final moments. CLAIRE TEARS IT UP! Danes squares away, lowers her head, rolls her shoulders and treats herself to Lilly's breadbasket - churning the mitts in hup-hup-hup. Lilly stricken, butt on ropes, face all "UH-H!" as Danes finishes up, easing weight to right leg while swiping a final hook across jug at bell.

R10: Lilly shakes off Claire's power, comes out like a champ with Danes ahead on all cards. Bitterest, hardest two-way fighting off the night as Claire's determined to stand her ground and deny Lilly's surge. Heads and cheeks bumping in close; left elbows pushing offending breasts back, creating space for step-in hooks to aching ribs. Claire adept at pushing on Lilly's biceps, then flurrying to breadbasket - mitts lapping at tummy quick as a kitten's tongue. Lilly bashing back, clubbing Claire about her head and shoulders; digging right hands in under blonde left breast; pushing and bulling Claire out of dug-in positions. Round finishes up with Claire's butt in ropes - girls just laying in mouth on shoulder and body-punching one another...judges like Lilly close, which makes the fight a draw through 10.

Evangeline immediately signaling her desire for overtime protocol, standing hands-on-hips midring as Claire awaits instructions from cracker-munching overlords. HISC signaling from the dugout that Claire is to take the draw: preserving the title against Lilly is a win, far as the suits are concerned. Danes moves to midring to convey the decision, telling Lilly: "Okay. Let's do this thing!" Crowd roars in approval as fighters return to respective corners: HISC directors ashen-faced as Claire's ego over-rules the game-theoretic algorithm in a bid for glory!

R11: Danes fights her fight for a minute - wheeling and dealing midring - then Lilly bodies up, buns shuddering side-to-side with the effort of driving Claire to ropes. Bitter fighting along apron as Lilly strains to keep Danes pinned down - brunette's right foot well back, pushing her weight into struggling champion. Snatching, clubbing back and forth in spots: it's stop and go action as Lilly constantly needs to re-establish body on Claire to prevent escapes. Panting, grunting work pays of for Evangeline: she's one round away from retaking the title!

R12: Glorious two-way trade midring - both women still fighting with professional form despite the attrition. Claire punishing Lilly's face jabs and right hands up top, then dipping-and-ripping heartfelt left uppercuts to ribs/tummy, really scorching Lilly to body. Evangeline willing to absorb in order to get off...she's clipping Claire alongside both jawlines, batting wide to Claire's hips/flanks, trading hot-tossing hup-hup to tummy as girls race to elevate punch-counts. Down the stretch - it's all even...Claire working tummy hup-hup-hup, then getting her back into the hook up top...LILLY WOBBLES OUT OF ORBIT! Evangeline all spazzy-legged for a moment, stunned by Claire's perfect chin-check...time runs out before blonde can pounce-in, but Danes steals the round with sneaky power late!

R13: Claire hard-eyed, roaming to her right in sliding pivots, then dipping in close, tidying up body hup-hup-hup, disengaging with that swiping hook to jaw. Lilly fighting through it, but grimacing, feeling Claire's work now...constant tummy-nibble finally paying off for Danes. Midway through, Claire dousing Lilly with a left/right up top, coaxing Evangeline into earmuff...Danes dips left-shoulder, pops hips-right and RIPS that succulent left uppercut, taking Lilly perfectly to sternum. Instant cringe-and-wince, Evangeline...her hands come down, stricken face coming up as she stoops forward and LILLY TAKES A KNEE! Perfect body shot puts Evangeline on bended knee, eyes shining with tears...brave brunette beats the count, but she's SO badly hurt. Claire's eyes fierce, but she stays disciplined - working her poke-and-pivot routine midring for the final minute, pitching the shutout, staying safe, and getting the duke. UD13 for the winner and STILL champ, Claire Danes.

After: No rancor in postfight...fighters immediately seeking one another out, embracing, talking as though they're a little club of two, and the rest of boxing is a seething mass of mediocrity somewhere down the mountainside. "If you want to call that the greatest effort of my career, I won't fight you," Danes says in postfight. "Certainly Evangeline's one of the greatest opponents I've ever had, who took me to places I've rarely had to go before in the ring. To give up those early knockdowns and come clawing back...to defend the title - not against some hot-right-now brat - but against the bantamweight's Bantam...that's a real thrill. Most of the active hall of famers are slowing down - you can see the fights adding up in their legs and making them vulnerable to younger fists and hungrier hearts. But not me. I'm getting better. The Claire Danes of 10 or even 5 years ago could not have competed with me. That's gotta be costing a lot of girls a lot of sleep!"
