Britney Spears  vs. Natalie Dormer
(Words: Front Street / Results: Lookout!)

BEFORE:

Dormer her usual fun-loving self in the pre-fight, all about catty, snide remarks involving Britney's level of commitment. "Yes, it's all about Britney, isn't it," she says with a smirk. "All about whether or not Britney's really invested or just here for the paycheck. We all know how she is. And the word no one is saying is 'lazy'. Well, I'm about to expose her and end this myth about her being some kind of top bantamweight, which she hasn't been for years now."

"Natalie likes to hear her own voice," says Britney with a lovely smile. "And I can't imagine why, because it's one of the most irritating voices I've ever heard. Of course, they say your voice sounds different inside your own head. Perhaps Natalie's isn't quite so grating when she hears it. And, maybe it gets drowned out by all the other voices she hears...the ones that tell her she's not good enough."

ROUND ONE:

Dormer after Spears early, looking to make a statement. Britney quite content to allow the Brit to fight lead. She quickly backs to the ropes and goes into the pocket. Dormer attacks aggressively...which is just what Spears wants. Natalie fires shell after shell, but few hit the target. Spears is all hand, head and shoulder movement. Natalie's gloves, the ones that get through, that aren't picked off by Britney's defenses, land on shoulders and arms, and all the offensive action leaves the lovely Brit open to Spears counter attacks. Britney's measured with them, conserving energy as Natalie burns it, but her efforts are effective. She scores in short flurries, backing Dormer up a step or two, then raising the guard again and inviting her forward. Dormer continues pounding away, a bit frustrated but not discouraged, to little effect. A late Spears right hand gets Dormer's attention in a big way and slows her down a bit at the bell. Good opening round for Britney, who has the 10-9 lead.

ROUND TWO:

Dormer again the aggressor, and Spears again willing to cede canvas and go into the pocket. Natalie working even harder in the second, trying to find openings in Britney's defenses, but, mostly failing to do that. Spears continues to sit back, waiting for spots to counter, and, when they appear, she lands solid shot. Dormer refuses to be cowed, however, intent on finding ways to get leather on target. Spears content as well, to lie back and let Natalie work. As the round goes on, Dormer begins to concentrate more on the body, finding it easier to score downstairs than up. Spears, as sturdy as any bantam, isn't overly concerned about Natalie's investment there and continues to keep the guard high, frustrating her efforts to the head and countering when opportunities present themselves. When the bell sounds, Dormer's done enough to the body to take a close round and even things up at 19.

ROUND THREE:

Britney right back to the pocket, very comfortable there. Dormer again willing to lay siege, but, this time she encounters a more mobile defense. Spears moving the feet, sliding along the ropes, setting up angles that allow her to create more openings and get more aggressive. Dormer finds herself taking heavy, accurate fire, every punch repaid in double as Britney zeroes in and ups her work rate. Dormer not chastened, keeps after Spears, but she's taking the worst of it, despite her determined efforts, being forced to cover up and back up for the first time in the fight. Britney doesn't press forward, however. She prefers to fight off the ropes and continues to force the Natalie to come to her, and Dormer gamely does so, but to little positive effect. Spears finally goes after Dormer down the stretch, driving her back with solid flurries of leather and the bell sounds with Natalie backed against the ropes and covering up and Britney having gone back in front 29-28 with a wide victory in the third.

ROUND FOUR:

Dormer a bit more passive, looking frustrated as Britney again settles into the pocket. Natalie can't seem to find or create lanes to punch. Everything gets picked off and leads to opportunities for Britney to counter. Spears leaning back into the ropes, playing defense, countering only when she has golden opportunities to do so. Dormer almost reluctant to let the hands go, unable to get off, the small openings she sees closing before she can get her hands moving. As the round goes on, Natalie begins to go body, where, at least, she can land. Britney responds in kind, hooking the ribs and lathering the lats, and the battle is joined. Thumping leather pounds into exposed flesh, landing with audible smacks. Both women ship the shell admirably, continuing to fire away without let up right to the bell. When the smoke clears, Spears has won another round on the cards and extended her lead to 39-37.

ROUND FIVE:

Britney continues to work from the pocket, and Natalie's frustration continues to build. She can't find a way to penetrate Spears' defenses, and she's thrown just about everything in her arsenal at the Hall of Famer already. Dormer ups the work rate this time out, once again fighting lead and allowing Britney to do what she prefers, work counters off the ropes. Natalie goes back to the body early, then tries working her way up, but Britney's not biting. Spears keeps the guard up, and Dormer's gloves find arm, shoulder and leather, but not their target. Then, the counter comes. A whistling right hook that blasts into Natalie's left cheek and DORMER GOES DOWN dropping to one knee, stunned, chastened. She's up at six, a little shaky, and, for the second time in the fight, Britney exploits the breakthrough. She drives Natalie back into the ropes and begins hammering away with the heavy artillery. Dormer's legs and determination are sorely tested as she takes a beating for over a minute, but neither are found wanting. When the bell rings, Natalie is scuffed but standing. She's also in a hole, trailing 49-45 at the half way point.

ROUND SIX:

Natalie is nowhere near as aggressive to start the second half of the fight. Clearly mindful of Spears' power, Dormer begins picking her spots carefully, working her jab, trying to set up keyhole rights. She's able to do so at times, but not often, mostly, again, unable to get off. The good news, though, is that the passivity is contagious. Dormer's caution means there are fewer opportunities for Spears to counter, and Britney begins spending more and more time simply leaning against the ropes and waiting for Natalie to punch. After a busy fifth, this one seems even slower-paced than it actually is, as both women seem to be doing a lot of standing around and not much else. Down the stretch Dormer goes back to the body, and Britney responds, banging some beef of her own. There's not much accomplished, however, and, when the bell rings, Natalie has herself a narrow win that cuts Britney's lead to 58-55.

ROUND SEVEN:

More of the same, with Dormer fighting a very passive lead, and Britney willing to be just as passive in defense. Natalie, though, getting a little more done this stanza. She's timing Spears a little better, able to land in combination more often. Spears content to take her openings as they come, playing Earl Weaver patiently waiting for that three-run homer and knowing those heavy hands of hers are her answer to Boog and the Robinsons. Dormer disciplined, refusing to open up and create opportunities for her rival to counter with power. She picks away effectively showing just how much skill and talent there is underneath all that attitude. Spears all defense, rocking and rolling the body along the ropes, making for a difficult target, occasionally firing back with single shot, but mostly willing to play duck and dodge. Again, the final results are close, but, again, Dormer has banked the round, and she's now halved the lead to 67-65.

ROUND EIGHT:

Spears again in the pocket with Dormer laying siege, but it's a more aggressive Britney now. A veteran of nearly 150 fights and looking for her 90th win, Spears no doubt knows what's on the judge's cards, and she knows if she can book this round, Dormer's going to need something big late, something Spears defensive style makes all but impossible. With that in mind, Britney begins forcing the pace. She doubles and triples up on the counters, and lands some solid shot that backs Natalie up, forcing her to reset and come forward again, usually into pre-sited heavy artillery. Dormer's clearly taking the worst of it, much like she did in the fifth...and then, she's not. BRITNEY'S DOWN and the Hour-Glass corner is going nuts. Dormer's thrown a combination, hook to the body and then one to the head...and Spears' corner knows it wasn't the head shot that did the damage, it was the body blow...which landed well below the belt. But the referee isn't chastising
Dormer, he's counting, because Natalie has cleverly blocked him from seeing where that first punch landed. Spears is up at eight, clearly in agony, and the ref seems about to waive it off, but he doesn't. Perhaps it's the shouting from the Hour-Glass corner that dissuades him. Either way, it continues and Dormer quickly piles on. Spears is trapped on the ropes, hurt with leaden legs, and Natalie takes full advantage for the last minute of the round, emptying the magazines on a now stationary target to finish off a huge round that makes the score 75-75 with two to go.

ROUND NINE:

The referee gets an earful from the Hour-Glass corner, particularly from an incensed Mariska, during the break. When action resumes, Britney is still clearly hurt and Natalie is all over her, driving her back into the ropes and winging away with both hands. Spears is able to catch some of the punches on her gloves, but she's still not moving well, and that makes her a much easier target. Then, BAM! Britney wobbles and nearly goes down again, and again her corner is going crazy. Natalie's landed low for the second time, and, she's disguised it perfectly. Spears is now helpless on the ropes and Dormer digs in with both hands. Sweat flies as Dormer snaps Spears head back once, then twice...and then it's over! The referee leaps in and waives it off. Dormer leaps in the air and celebrates in the middle of the ring, but, not for long. The Hour-Glass corner is inside the ropes and, while Jewel is helping Britney back to her stool, Mariska and Neve have a bone
to pick with Natalie! Then the Rampant corner is in the ring, and pushing and shoving ensue, but, it's the corner people only. Look far and wide and you won't see a Rampant fighter coming to Dormer's defense. You will see security quickly into the ring to get the two sides apart. They manage to keep them that way, but they can't stop Dormer and Campbell from inventing new pieces of invective to hurl at one another. When order is finally restored, however, it's Natalie's hand that's raised, a winner by TKO9 in what's no doubt  the biggest victory of her career to date!

AFTER:

Dormer is, to no one's surprise, unrepentant. "Sour grapes," says Natalie, with that smirk in full play. "They thought their girl had the fight, and they didn't believe I could come back and stop her, but I did. They can say whatever they want, but, this is going down in the record books as a win for me and a loss for her. And this is just the start. I'm looking at those rankings and I don't see anyone ahead of me I can't deal with just as I dealt with Britney tonight. Michalka, Park, Munn, McAdams, Lilly, Holt, Wilde, VanCamp? None of them are any better than Spears, and you SAW what I did to her. It's just the start. And the finish line is the Unified Bantamweight Championship."
