Bridget Regan (Bazz Fight Club) vs Abbie Cornish (Downunder Boxing)
(result:Lookout/words:Simgrrl)

Before: Two 'big' bodies vying for respect clash in the next bout. Bridget Regan (5'9”) is 32 y/o and hails from sunny San Diego, CA. She got a late start in her boxing career and only has 22 fights (12-11-1 w/11 KOs) yet is consistently mentioned in 'top ten' rankings among both light and welter talent where she's often described as 'powerful'...and her KO ratio of 91% confirms that opinion.

Abbie Cornish (5'8”) grew up on a 170 farm with three brothers and a sister in New South Wales, Australia. Like Regan, she's 32 y/o and while Abbie only has 18 fights (5-13-0 w/4 KOs) on her official record, there are unconfirmed rumors she's had a few more. Cornish's knockout ratio of 80% doesn't compare to Regan's, but there's no doubting the quality of her opponents (CZJ, Righetti, Strahovski, Prepon, Casta, Lawrence, Wiseman, Matsumoto, and Hawkins). While some may not be household names in N. America, all were current, former, or soon-to-be champions when Cornish fought them!

Unlike Regan, who's appeared almost exclusively in the FCBA, Cornish bounced around; appearing in at least five different licensing organizations...and she admits to several 'unlicenced' scraps with a few “...in the outback, plus one in a parking lot.” Cornish also fought on the big screen in “Sucker Punch.”

Neither woman is willing to concede anything to the other, both realizing that at their age, every fight can be critical to their continued employment. While thirty-two isn't “old” by most standards - for actresses it's “on the cusp”. There are always a dozen younger, cuter, more nubile, and possibly at least equally talented, women waiting to climb over an 'aging' actress whose career seems to have plateaued and neither Abbie nor Bridget wants to get that label. Unfortunately, given the power each woman packs in her fists, it's unlikely one of them will end the night upright - and there's a possibility both may find themselves on the canvas before this fight is over.

Last minute confusion over costume results in a brief delay. After a coin flip, Regan has to return to her dressing room to change out of her black bikini as she and Cornish both showed up wearing the same outfit. (As everyone knows by now, two women never want to wear the same dress to a party...it's the same in boxing rings!) Cornish loosening up in her corner, shadow boxing in a sleek black two-piece suit bandeau top and boy-cut bottom; red gloves and white shoes. Regan returns to the ring and doffs her robe to reveal....she's changed into her bra/panties (white underwire bra and white bikini panties) white gloves and black trainers. Cornish looking a bit chuffed as she's been upstaged by Bridget's “underwear show.”

During R1: Regan simmering at the clothing change, slow to get started as she spends the first thirty seconds pulling and tugging at her underwear before finally giving up and setting down to the business at hand. Cornish quick off the mark, pumping the jab in Bridget's face with ferocity. Regan's cheeks pinking up prettily as Abbie works the jab, then drops the right hand to put a shimmy in Regan's thighs. Bridget going to the body midway thru the round and Abbie doesn't like it! Regan right licking at Abbie's flank; Cornish wincing on impact. Nice counter right hand by Cornish backs Regan up; left hook keeps the brunette in retreat to the ropes. Cornish sets up forehead-to-forehead and both beauties bang body; both end up clinching up high as they lean on the ropes 'til the referee breaks them apart. Closing seconds an exchange of right hands goes Abbie's way as Bridget is sent backward into the ropes. Bell ends it before Cornish can take advantage. A 10-9 round goes Cornish's way - as much on her effort and aggression as anything; both landed hard blows and both were shaken by them.

R2: Both fighters corners talk animatedly to their charges between rounds; both women are on their feet before the bell looking eager to get back to work. Cornish continues to work behind a firm left jab, using it to set up her powerful right hand whenever possible. Regan circling to her left, pumping out the jab; she too has her right cocked and neither woman is shy about throwing it often. Neither lands a telling blow in the opening minute, but both feel the others power and they're being shaken - if not rocked - by solid impacts. Midway, it all changes! Cornish overextends on a right hand, exposing her body; Regan pounds home a right to the midsection, taking Abbie's breath away. Slow to recover her balance, Cornish gets lit up by two, three, four, consecutive punches as Regan works her way up Abbie's lush body from hips to hooters! Cornish reeling backward under assault, trying frantically to cover up, but Bridget's feeling it now and she's unrelenting, throwing with both hands in four and five punch clusters; never giving Cornish a chance to catch her breath and set herself. Clock winding down and it's all Bridget Regan all the time. Cornish withering on the ropes in a Michel Angelo “crouching turtle” defense; she's not punching back, just rocking side-to-side, getting Jimmy Buffeted. Bell: Abbie looking like a drunk in Margueritaville wobbling back to her stool. Big 10-8 round puts Regan into the lead after 2 rousing rounds.

R3: Cornish's corner frantically working on their girl; Trainer applying Endswell on her left eye; manager holding an ice pack on the back of her neck; costume designer gently inserting a replacement protective cup in the left side of her bandeau top (where'd the original go? I must've missed it in all the excitement!) Regan bouncing on her toes at the warning buzzer, Abbie still slumped on her stool at the bell, just rises with an Aussie “hand on her bum” assist from the trainer in time to slide away as Bridget comes charging across the ring. Regan's wild overhand right misses Abbie by a whisker; nearly takes off Cornish's trainer's head though. Abbie sliding along the ropes, pawing the left at Regan trying to buy time. Cornish shifts to a Donatello turtle defense, but Regan's left hooks crack her shell and Cornish again goes into retreat; back stepping until she's trapped in Regan's corner. Bridget's handlers screaming instructions and Bridgey's executing both the instructions and Abbie Cornish! Abbie unable to find a fix for Regan's powerful body punching; her soft body breaking down under continued pounding. Regan's left hook almost drops Abbie! But then her right cross does! CORNISH GOES DOWN! Abbie spun around, windmilling her arms two or three steps before nosediving to the canvas; her extended arms do little to break her fall as they spread out under her as she craters. Regan, in pursuit, trips over Cornish's butt and nearly goes down herself; grabbing the top rope to stay on her feet. While Bridget walks to the far corner, Cornish sits up shaking her head; looking around in a daze. She gets to one knee, then tilts forward on all fours; then just barely makes it to her feet at nine. The referee checks her closely, then lets it go on. But it's only a matter of time! Regan pounding Cornish's body, then going to the head as Abbie's hands drop; then when she raises her hands again, Bridget meanly shoeshines Abbie's proud puppies, coming up from 'down under' to set the jubblies jumpin'. Nothing coming back from Abbie and the referee's seen all she needs to, stepping in to cuddle the tearful Abbie away from further embarrassment (and harm). Bridget Regan raises her arms and stomps around the ring with a big smile and a TKO3 that will likely keep those perky young wolves from her door for another month or two!

After: “The body, it's always the body with girls like her,” Bridget pontificates postfight. “She never was one of those 'hard body, beach fitness' types. She looks soft and when you hit her, you realize she is soft. You can feel the give in her abs when you punch 'em. I mean, she's got a lot of heart...just like all the Aussies. I'd love to have her at my side in war, but I don't think she's cut out for this sport. I've seen her in a wrestling ring and she's very good. Some place where she can get you down and put her weight on you while she gets to rest. I mean, I'd fight her every month if I could; really pad my W-L record; but I don't think it'd do much for my rankings. She is what her record says she is...”

Cornish came to the podium after Regan had left, looking a lot more battered than you'd expect for a girl who only went 2+ rounds! She didn't really have much explanation for what happened, either; in fact, she seemed pretty much dazed and confused by everything that had happened to her. “I have no excuse,” she pouted. “She cleaned my clock. I thought in the first round I had her number, but something happened in that second round. I don't know if it was me - or her - but she seemed like a different fighter.”

In response to a question about whether the “costume kerfuffle” was strategy on her part or an honest mistake, Cornish looked just as dazed and confused. “There as no confusion about it. I told her camp two weeks ago I was wearing black. Nobody got back to me, nobody said anything until she showed up in a black bikini almost identical to mine. OK, so my top was bandeau and hers had straps, but then I don't need straps, so I? I suspect maybe her management staged the whole thing just to get her fired up and angry at me for no reason at all.”

Asked about Cornish's accusation later, Regan's manager merely grinned and asked rhetorically, “Do you think I'd pull a cheap stunt like that just because my girl was taking her opponent lightly in the days leading up to the fight?”
