Before: Penelope copacetic about her underdog status. “After what she did, almost anybody she fought was going to be the underdog. I have as much chance to beat her as anyone, and more than most.”

Sarah dismissive of those who think this is an “easing-back-in” bout after a record-threatening title run. “Penelope’s a veteran. Seen it all, done it all. You’re not going to trick her or overwhelm her. I’m going to have do everything right, and still, you take your chances.”

R1&2: Pene has 2 inches on Sarah, and she puts those to good use, boxing, dukes up, but setting down on hard straight right hands after punishing jabs to the face. Shahi catching rivet gun blows has to give ground, but she gathers herself in spots, coming back with wide hooks targeting the trim waist and beautiful face of her foe. Cruz backing her girl up, dominating the hard hearted exchanges with her straight punches, wins both rounds, bloodies Sarah’s nostril in the second.

R3: Sarah makes an adjustment, ducking in close, tucking a short left hook snug to Pene's paunch, then covering up as Cruz answers with shoe-shining flurry. Shahi neat on her back foot, bending low on it, then easing back in to fit a smooth right hand to breadbasket, followed by a crisp "here I am" hook to chops. Pene smote, but sturdy: she hooks Shahi's generous chest; leans in to tuck a tidy hook in behind Sarah's right elbow. Shahi pivoting, dragging the left foot, right at her cheek, left across her gut as she shifts angle, stays supple on her hips, leaning in and out with swatting shots. Classy, busy stuff - Sarah brawling the boxer just like she’s supposed to.

R4: Sarah roams to her right, moves in behind her workmanlike jab, targets the waistline right/left, then pivots-out behind a ringing left hook up top. Pene frowning in confusion - showing dukes at temples, giving up her toned tummy on the cheap, defending her head and face. Shahi has Cruz’s timing down, able to settle into turning battle midring. She’s darting in and out to lather Pene’s body, jabbing guard while disengaging to stymie receipts. Cruz reduced to a spectator spectator - just covering up and taking as Sarah has her way with her.

R5: Sarahi slipping under Pene's educated jab; rising up into a spellbinding right/left counter across the chin rocks Cruz’s world. Shahi takes over looking every inch the champ. Hooks her tummy lustily, pushes her shoulders to bull her into the ropes, hooks her tummy again, scrubs a pair of uppercuts to jug; dips left for an angle on Pene's right side, fitting choice left hook in above Castilian hip. Sarah's being heartlessly efficient, pushing and punching to bell. Shahi smiling, pushing off Cruz's heaving chest for the break: Pene with hair in her eyes, lips parted as she slumps all ass-kicked and gorgeous in ropes.

R6: Pene out slowly, yielding initiative to Sarah. Shahi forward behind the jab to eyebrow - knock-knocking at Cruz up top, then stepping close to fit tuff left hooks in under right breast. Pene gasping, falling back to ropes, Sarah relentless, a hardhearted flurry to breadbasket sits Cruz in ropes, fast flurry hooks in behind her right elbow and PENELOPE’S DOWN! Groaning descent for Cruz, she's on all fours, grimacing in pain, tries to push herself up, but collapses back to canvas as Sarah Shahi takes the KO6!

After: “Just what I needed,” Sarah sums up afterwards. “Take a top 25 girl who works out of the same book as the champ, and take her apart. Make the wolves back off, lets me focus on fights that matter, not having to fend off the starlets looking to make a name for themselves by claiming a champion scalp. Let ‘em go after Hudgens if they want a win over a former champ on their resume.”
