"I'm definitely glad to be returning to the ring. I don't think I can really do it enough." Anna Popplewell seemed relatively cheerful for someone soon to fight. "The list of people I want to face is getting pretty oversized at this point, so I have to keep on top of that! Jenna earned herself a spot on the list just by being a respectable name who's about on my level. We looked at a lot of names and at some point I just had to pick one. Anyway, if she's listening, I just want to tell her good luck!"
"I was happy to accept this one," commented Jenna Dewan in her interview before the match. "She's no loser, so getting in the ring and beating her will look good. With any luck I'll be able to move on to better things after this one."
Jenna Dewan entered the ring in red trunks and bra, while Anna Popplewell made her entrance in blue. Both fighters quietly went over any last minute plans as the crowd murmured, waiting for the action to begin.
Round 1: During the first minute of the fight, each boxer tested out the other with a spirited offense, looking for the strategy that might carry her for the duration of the fight. The early winner was Popplewell, who managed to outmaneuver her opponent on several occasions, landing a quick hit or two each time and frustrating her opponent more than injuring her. Dewan seemed to have adapted to her opponent in the final seconds of the fight, but the damage was done.
Round 2: While the second round looked to turn out similar to the first early on, Dewan turned things in her favor in the first minute. Following up a miss to catch Popplewell on the cheek as she dodged to set up a counter, the older actress not only stunned her opponent and temporarily put an end to her offense, but sent a signal regarding what was to come. Several additional similar exchanges sent Popplewell back to her corner with a bit more respect for her opponent.
Round 3: Looking to turn things around after Dewan seemed to have gotten her number in round two, Popplewell began to take greater risks in the third round. After some setbacks where Dewan drove her back in the first minute, the gamble paid off. Landing a left hook to the head, Popplewell put Dewan's ability to defend herself in enough of a poor state that soon the older actress found herself backed into a corner. Popplewell, out to score an early win, happily landed bomb after bomb while her opponent could only cover up as best she could. Finally forcing a clinch, Dewan earned herself a breather and an escape after the referee broke the fighters up for a lack of activity. With some time to pull herself together, Dewan struggled less in the final minute, but it was not enough to turn things in her favor.
Round 4: The opening seconds of the fourth round saw Popplewell walk into a straight punch to the nose, and things only went downhill from there for the younger actress. It seemed that Dewan had her opponent entirely figured out, and was able to keep her penned in consistently, landing hits that Popplewell had no answer to. Popplewell, in contrast, seemed to still be struggling to adapt. All that could be said for Popplewell in the fourth round was that she stayed on her feet despite several stumbles and close calls.
Round 5: Possibly due to advice received between rounds, Popplewell re-entered the fight with a clearer grasp on how to engage Dewan. Each time they exchanged blows, the two women came away looking about even. However, as the round progressed, it seemed that Dewan was able to adapt to her opponent for a second time, and each time they engaged, her defenses were slightly tighter, allowing her to land her hits while escaping unscathed.
Round 6: Once again, the time between rounds seemed to have given Popplewell time to reevaluate her tactics. The younger actress parried her opponent's early attacks, coming back to get in close and land several strong hits to her opponent's body. An attempt at a repeat performance proved disastrous for Popplewell, as she walked into Dewan's right hand during her second advance. Stopped dead in her tracks, the tiny bit of momentum Popplewell had remaining caused her to sink to the floor, face down. Up in a few seconds, Popplewell assured the referee that she could continue. However, the following minute proved that her ability to fight was suffering. Dewan easily stayed out of her reach, except when she moved in to strike her opponent. Soon, Popplewell was standing in the center of the ring, absorbing right hand after right hand, forcing the referee to stop the fight -- TKO6 Jenna Dewan.
"I really feel like this fight might be the one to take me out of little league," commented a tired but exhilarated Dewan during the period immediately after the fight as a dazed Popplewell leaned back against her corner, arms at her sides. "I mean, if I knock out enough small timers, eventually someone has to take notice."
