NEW YEAR'S BOPPIN' EVE AT THE ASYLUM
Posted by The Grand Wizard on December 31, 2014, 12:35 pm
BEFORE:
"I've heard all the jokes about orange being the new black...and blue," says Taylor with a smile. "Well, I'm not here to be a punch line or an opponent. I'm here to win, and I know I can."
"She's got enough physicals to compete at big girl", says Leelee with a nod. "She's got enough of a profile to get fights, too. And we all know what she's here for...to get an upset win and get noticed. Wrong girl. Wrong night."
ROUND ONE:
O'Dell: "Back at ringside and that's 'Fidelity' by Regina Spektor, and here comes one of that artist's biggest fans, the lovely Taylor Schilling!"
McCarthy: "She's supposed to be in some big TV show, but it's never ON. I've got, like, 800 channels, and I can never FIND it on there..."
Tess: "Um, Mac..."
Cassie: "Worth it, Tess?"
Tess(sighing): "You're right, BFF. Even though this is the first fight, we STILL don't have time..."
McCarthy: "What ARE you two babbling about..."
O'Dell: "Schilling into the ring, helped off with the robe, and, fittingly, she's wearing an ORANGE bikini that shows off a body that leaves little to be desired. Looks to have added a little weight from what we've seen in the past for this catchweight contest. And, that's 'Uprising' by Muse you hear..."
McCarthy: "And that can only mean that one of Weirdo's two REAL fighters, 'The Polish Princess', Leelee Sobieski is on her way to the ring..."
O'Dell: "Leelee taps glove to fist with Mac as usual on her way to the ring, then climbs inside and is helped off with the robe by Jewel and Neve to reveal that black two-piece she favors, and the ladies are about ready. Time to get some picks. Tess favors Leelee. Mac?"
McCarthy: "Schilling might have some ability, but we really don't know. She's only had two FCBA fights. What we DO know is she's not in the league of an experienced Top Five welter like Sobieski. Leelee's a heavy favorite."
O'Dell: "Cassie?"
Cassie: "I agree with Tess."
O'Dell: "There's the bell, and both girls to work behind the long left jab. We've seen a lot of Sobieski and know she likes the ranged stuff and Schilling, in her limited FCBA work, has shown she likes it, too, so, no surprise these are the terms we're starting the fight on."
McCarthy: "Leelee has some reach advantage, so, fans, take a look at how Taylor's dealing with that. Watch how she's sliding left, away from Leelee's jab, getting to spots where she can use her own for points."
O'Dell: "Danger of that, of course, is that she's stepping to power, Leelee's right hand. But, Taylor's slide puts her outside the right..."
McCarthy: "Exactly. Now, you have to be careful with this kind of tactic, but, if your footwork is solid, you can make it work for you."
O'Dell: "And Schilling is making it work here in the first. She's holding her own with Leelee in ranged combat, and doing more than that."
Cassie: "Making Leelee work the feet, and that's a good strategy. Sobieski's a different kind of welter. She's not a mostly-stationary hitter. She moves well. Hands, head, feet. If you stand in one place, she can run circles around you. Taylor's not standing in one place."
O'Dell: "And she IS getting where she wants to be and getting off when she gets there. Showing angles. Keeping Leelee off square. Final seconds evaporate, and there's the bell. Good first for Taylor."
Tess: "Always nice to get the first when you're the underdog."
ROUND TWO:
O'Dell: "Second begins with Schilling back to the left jab and the leftward slide step. Taylor double-pumping the jab. Leelee trying to match footwork and square up."
McCarthy: "Sobieski starting to do that. She's finding the range with her own left now. This is what a good, veteran fighter can do. She sees something she wasn't expecting and she adjusts to it pretty quickly."
O'Dell: "Leelee getting that left home. And that's the heavy Front Street Jab. It's stopping Taylor, even backing her up a step. Leaving her vulnerable to follow up rights and THERE'S A BIG ONE!"
Tess: "Schilling's hurt! That right hand wobbled the knees!"
O'Dell: "It did, indeed, and Leelee knows it. Sobieski going to work with both hands now, backing Schilling into the ropes and banging away. Taylor covering up, keeping the guard high, trying to solidify, countering when she can, but mostly taking leather from Leelee. Sobieski busy, but precise, setting up the punches, pretty much ignoring the body, which is on sale, to bang away upstairs. Schilling playing defense well, though. Clinching and covering right to the bell. Taylor survives, but Leelee claims the round wide."
Cassie: "And evens the fight at 19."
ROUND THREE:
O'Dell: "Third round begins with more movement from Taylor. Schilling clearly has the legs back, and she's putting them to use. She's using more than just a slide step now, not just turning but circling, always to her left, away from Sobieski's jab."
Tess: "Not much question Schilling's spent a lot of time thinking about how to deal with that jab, is there, Mac?"
McCarthy: "None at all, Walmart. Her people clearly know that if Leelee gets that jab on target consistently and starts controlling the fight with it, Taylor's in trouble."
O'Dell: "Sobieski IS getting it home, though not as much as she'd like. Schilling again managing to stay off square most of the time. She's getting to some spots as well, scoring with her own left hand and following up with rights."
Cassie: "More movement than accurate fire in this one. Both girls working hard to get into position to punch."
O'Dell: "Definitely. And neither willing to wing away from bad spots. No surprise from Leelee, who is, as Mac pointed out, a veteran, but that's nice patience from Taylor, who's only had a couple of FCBA fights. She's not getting outside herself on the big stage. Sticking to the plan. Circling and jabbing right to the bell. Close one. But Sobieski."
Tess: "And Leelee in the lead now, 29-28."
ROUND FOUR:
O'Dell: "Back to work in the fourth and both fighters right back to what worked in the last round. Schilling with that leftward circle. It's not not an on-your-toes or on-your bicycle thing. There's no dancing involved, but it's more than a slow rotation."
Tess: "Good point, Jenny. This isn't the kind of jab and circle we've seen Mac or Cassie do. It's slower, but, like you said, faster than a normal turn."
O'Dell: "And that increased speed no doubt meant to force Leelee to work hard to catch up and square up, and, like it did in the third, it's working for Taylor. Schilling limiting Sobieski's effectiveness with the jab, not getting stopped or backed up allowing Leelee to put together heavy flurries."
McCarthy: "It's mostly one-punch stuff for both fighters. Again, it's more movement than punching."
O'Dell: "Like two field armies manuevering for advantageous position. Both women finding that ground at times and scoring when they do so, but those engagements are brief. Then it's back to the war of maneuver. Final 30 seconds ticking down now. Schilling pop-pop-popping the left. Sobieski responding with a left right. Good, even round again and, there's the bell. Another close on, this one to Taylor."
Cassie: "All even at 38 after four. This is encouraging stuff for Taylor."
ROUND FIVE:
O'Dell: "Fifth round begins like the fourth ended, with a war of movement. Sobieski looking to square, Schilling working hard to prevent that from happening. Taylor working angles very well here, Mac..."
McCarthy: "And that's a key for her in more than one way. Obviously, it's made her competitive in this fight, and, when you're a girl like Schilling, that's huge. Because you aren't coming in here to settle some business or climb the ladder to a title shot. This is a girl who's had a couple of FCBA fights and hasn't been on the big stage in four years. What she's trying to do is show enough to get another fight. Which could lead to another fight and another and maybe management and off you go..."
O'Dell: "And she IS showing something. No question she can move and she can box. Taylor continuing the leftward circle, jabbing, scoring when she gets to her spots and DOWN SHE GOES! Oh, that came out of NOWHERE!"
Cassie: "Right hook! Sobieski bounced forward and just BLASTED her with it!"
O'Dell: "Referee's count at three. Four. Five. Six. Schilling on her back, sitting up now. Rolls to her knees at seven and she's up at eight. Referee gives her the mandatory and will let it continue, and on comes Leelee! Sobieski banging that left home, backing Taylor up with it. And we're seeing a rerun of the second round. Schilling up against the ropes and taking, hanging on as Sobieski looks for the finisher. Taylor clinching, covering up, running clock..."
Tess: "Looks to be firming up as we head down the stretch, Jenny. She's banging back in counter."
O'Dell: "Definitely is. Not going to allow a romp to the bell. Good two-way thumping right to the bell!"
Tess: "Give Schilling credit for doing more than hanging on, but Leelee's got a 10-8 round and a 48-46 lead at the half."
ROUND SIX:
O'Dell: "Schilling with the legs back as we start the second half of the fight and she's right back to the leftward circle and Sobieski again looking to match footwork. Taylor getting her jab home, staying off square, and DOWN SHE GOES AGAIN! Sobieski agan with a bounce forward and a quick right hook and Schilling's on her back!"
McCarthy: "THIS is what I keep telling everyone about this Sobieski kid! She's a complete fighter. She's not just physical, she's smart. Hadn't come forward the whole fight until last round. Quick change of tactics and she makes it work. Went right back to it and it works again."
O'Dell: "Schilling again sitting up, this time at five. On her knees and pushing to her feet at seven. Referee giving her the mandatory eight count. Takes a look-see and going to let this one continue, and Sobieski wasting no time going to work..."
Tess: "You can really see how heavy that Front Street Jab is, Jenny. Look how it actually backs Schilling up as it lands."
O'Dell: "Taylor quickly out of real estate and she's trapped on the ropes. Leelee clinical, not going all in, setting up punches, putting them together, SNAPPING Taylor's head back with a right and there's ANOTHER that splits the gloves!"
Cassie: "Get IN there, Ref!"
O'Dell: "RIGHT HOOK and Schilling wobbles, stumbles along the ropes into a HARD left hand and IT'S OVER! Referee stopping it and your winner by TKO6 is 'The Polish Princess', Leelee Sobieski!"
AFTER:
O'Dell: "Let's go up to the ring and Tess Valmore!"
Tess: "I have our winner, Leelee Sobieski, and, Leelee, talk about that change of tactics late..."
Leelee: "Well, she can box, Tess. I hope people saw that tonight. She's a legitimate fighter at lightweight and I hope she gets more chances. She's slick and athletic and she moves well. I like to fight at range and so does she, and we were pretty much swapping rounds doing that, so I decided to get a little more aggressive."
Tess(smiling): "And it worked for you. I ask this all the time, but I'll ask again. What's next for you?"
Leelee: "Well, 2015 is a new year. Maybe I'll finally get that title shot. Otherwise, whomever they put in front of me, I'll fight."
