"I'm shocked that the line to fight this woman isn't a mile long," said Robyn Lawley to the press in the days before her match with Jessie J. "She has by far the most punchable face I've seen in my life. Seriously, I dare you to look straight at a picture of her for ten seconds and stay calm. So when her people were like 'Yeah, you're at the front of the line, go right ahead,' I was pretty surprised. But in a good way."
"She's a nobody and I have to knock her back down to where she belongs," Jessie J said in her own interview. "It's as simple as that. You have to occasionally have a fight where you say 'No, you don't get to make headlines, please leave,' to some woman who sees you as her big opportunity."
Round 1: The fight began slowly as each woman tested the other out. Lawley's superior reach allowed her to give her shorter opponent a difficult time as the round continued, landing several solid and unanswered hits. A combo the taller model landed in the final minute put the first round firmly in her favor.
Round 2: The second round saw a much more spirited Jessie J make Lawley's life more difficult. This time around, the brunette singer was giving as good as she got, not shutting down her opponent by any means but at least handing the taller woman some setbacks and preventing her from controlling the fight. However, once again Lawley managed to land enough blows as the final seconds ticked away to turn a stalemate into a success.
Round 3: Again, it was clear that Jessie J was giving it her all even in the opening seconds of the third round; the shorter singer was able to put Lawley on the defensive early on. Though Lawley's defenses were holding up, the taller model was obviously struggling and unable to assert herself. Jessie J never managed to fully break Lawley's defenses, as the taller model always managed to rally after any defeats she was handed, but the singer emerged from the third round with a badly needed win.
Round 4: Jessie J continued her control of the match in the fourth round, seeming to surprise Lawley with her ferocity in the opening moments. Though Lawley was able to slow Jessie J's momentum in the following minute, she was not able to effectively respond to the shorter woman's offense. After scoring several victories, including one combo that seemed to cause a brief moment of panic in her blonde opponent, Jessie J was able to tie the score.
Round 5: The fifth round looked to be another hard fought win for Jessie J; in the opening minute she pummeled Lawley, weathered her responses, and sent the taller model into a retreat. However, when Lawley returned to the fight, anxious to put an end to Jessie J's success streak, things took a turn for the worse for the model. Jessie J was ready, counterattacking and landing a punch to Lawley's nose that left her obviously stunned, but still upright. The moment of weakness was all that the brunette needed, and before Lawley could cover up and cower helplessly, Jessie J had plenty of time to bludgeon her without mercy. The remainder of the round was equally cruel to Lawley, with the taller woman struggling to put up any meaningful resistance.
Round 6: After the strong showing in the previous round, Jessie J moved in aggressively at the start of the sixth, possibly looking to end the fight quickly. After some early but limited success, Jessie J found herself on the receiving end of a left hook from the furious model. Jessie J's offense was completely stopped for the moment, with Lawley slugging away at the desperately parrying and retreating woman. Jessie J, looking weak and unsteady but having regained her balance, eventually tried to fight her way back into the lead, only to be quickly shut down and punished. Her head knocked to the side, she stumbled about, taking hit after hit before going on the defensive and essentially forfeiting the rest of the round to her opponent.
Round 7: Jessie J, still looking like she was in less than peak shape after the abuse from last round, nevertheless returned to the fight showing signs of a recovery, coming out swinging and causing Lawley to back off. However, the model soon showed that she was simply taking her time, letting her brunette opponent get off a few ineffective attacks before moving to strike back. Each failure cost the singer powerful blows to the face that she had no answer to. As the time counted down, Jessie J looked less and less able to fight. With plenty of time left, Lawley moved in to finish things, landing a hit to Jessie J's jaw that shook her, easily parrying her weak response, and then moving to freely strike at the weakened woman, back and forth. Soon, Jessie J was barely able to respond, and Lawley backed off, looking pleased as her opponent slowly collapsed face down. Though she managed to make it onto her hands and knees before the count ended, it was obvious that the singer had no chance to recover, and Lawley's dominant pose directly over the prone woman made it clear how thoroughly she had won the fight.
"Well, that was fun!" commented a cheerful Lawley after the match. "I don't think I can really justify picking out my opponents based on how unpleasant they look in their publicity photos in the long term, but it's nice that I got a chance just this once. And who knows? Maybe I'll manage to find someone relevant to my career with a bad case of b###hface to fight someday." |
