THE WELTERWEIGHT REVIVAL
WILD-CARD FIGHT #2
Posted by Lookout! Boxing & Vassago on April 19, 9:41 am
BEFORE: Katharine McPhee was really unlucky drawing the Floydian-trained Megan Gale in the first round while Michelle Ryan was supposed to do a lot better against Gemma Atkinson herself however it's time to move on from those defeats and avoid facing Jodi Lyn O'Keefe in the wooden spoon fight come two weeks time. This is perhaps the closest match-up of the entire wild card round and most of the Las Vegas audience doesn't have a designated favorite allthough Tess Valmore predicts McPhee to win this one and subsequently face Karen Gillan in the order of merit round during the first weekend of May.
Katharine McPhee wears a yellow bikini top, blue knickers and yellow gloves. Michelle Ryan wears a red bikini set and black gloves. The fight is scheduled for ten rounds in the welterweight division.
Round 1: Both women start the fight aggressively but it's Michelle landing the crisp shots and snapping Katharine's head back in superior fashion and forcing the older brunette to cover up come on the minute mark already. Ryan keeps the pressure on and spikes the guard thereafter trying to push McPhee onto the ropes before eating a sluggish response from the back foot. This bothers her little and she swings into Katharine's ribcage finally sending her into the corner where she makes her drop the high guard to protect her midsection only to fire away at the exposed chin and snap McPhee's head into a moaning misery at the bell.
Round 2: That was impressive from Ryan who showed superior strenght in that opening round but McPhee quickly reacts and reverts into fast movement across the canvas to keep her opponent at bay early in the second. Michelle keeps stalking her but fails to make her efforts count and skims off the forearms while McPhe settles into mid-range counterpunching and lands single shots on the cheeks instead. The pace of the fight slows down and it plays into Katharine's advantage however she's unable to really punish the younger brunette as Michelle's guard remains in tact and despite a late flurry of McPhee and more single hand success, Michelle just bursts out laughing at the bell which raises several eyebrows around Caesars Palace. What was that all about?
Round 3: Michelle tries to catch Katharine with a classic haymaker early on but soon realizes she's not gonna match her footwork and reverts into teasing the older brunette into a frantic charge by applying the Muhammad Ali "come and punch me if you can" attitude. The thing is, McPhee can land a good punch and Ryan's resistance isn't that good as she gets whacked across the mouth and then eats a riffling follow up on the chin to sink on soft knees immediately afterwards.. McPhee slams a right hook on the temple from point blank range while Ryan's arms are unable to rise in time and... DOWN GOES MICHELLE.. simply ragdolled to the floor by a trademark welterweight series... so much for being the flamboyant one, honey... Michelle's shocked by the knockdown but that's all her fault and even though she isn't hurt badly, McPhee develops that evil spark in her eye and resumes the facial assault after the command and outworks the younger actress in close range to snaps her head back with more piercing jabs and quite frankly routing Michelle beyond expectations!
Round 4: It's all happening for McPhee right now as she tears into Ryan's face with more aggressive jabbing and easily pounds her on the heels before cracking a hook on the temple to bend the fellow brunette to the side with a loud gasp. She strikes over the top and digs her mitts into Michelle's cheeks to push her onto the ropes for good, tries to score another knockdown with repeated facial assault to force Ryan into deep cover but just lacks that one big punch now and there's no hole in sight to make the younger brunette pay for her careless attitude anymore. Still, Katharine keeps her opponent trapped in precarious position for remainder of the round and has the presence of mind to punish the ribcage late in the going to further soften Michelle up and leave her scowling in anger at the bell. She turns around and makes some obscene gesture to indicate she's clearly on top of Ryan now especially in the mental department and Michelle only adjusts her hair trying to figure out how to revive the early round success and somehow neglect the footwork and agility handicap.
Round 5: McPhee jumps into another fast pace approach and pummels through the high guard for early success but Ryan unloads a ribcage assault in response and cracks several solid jabs to slow the older brunette down and circle back from close range down the stretch. Both women recharge their batteries in a brief punch & weave try out before Katharine blinks first and jumps into another leather frenzy but basically gets poled by a right handed uppercut that bursts through her arms and catches on the nose in full swing.. Oooomph! McPhee squeals in pain and wobbles forward on soft knees almost going down on flat on her face as Michelle riffles a series of jabs on the exposed face and pounds her back to the ropes within seconds as Kathaine just can't regain her balance and bellows out into earmuff cover once trapped along the ropes. Ryan screams out in her efforts and slices the guard well into the final minute to snap the fellow brunette's head back repeatedly until a couple of real hammers spike the nose again and make Phee bleed from damaged nostrils at the bell. The Ryan comeback is on!
Round 6: Katharine can't believe how exactly Michelle managed to make her bleed with that late flurry and just like the previous knockdown boosted her confidence sky high, it's the younger brunette working like crazy to open the patched up wound since the start of the sixth. Hectic jabbing from both sides and McPhee seemingly drops the superior agility in favor of an old fashioned leather aggression which is destined to fail as Michelle has the bigger punch and she clubs her way through on the cheeks sooner rather than later and makes the older brunette bleed again half way into the round. Still, McPhee seeks doing likewise and leans on Ryan jabbing against the cheeks but then meets a piercing uppercut on the jaw and sinks on her knees scowling in pain; Michelle turns on the cross hooking venom and blasts a furious series on the nose to inflict instant parachute mode but there's nowhere Katharine can escape and gets whacked by another hook on the bleeding nose from point blank range that SENDS HER CRASHING ONTO HER KNEES... she bends her head against the canvas and once she lifts it up there a small pool of blood visible and quite frankly McPhee is on the verge of bursting into tears here! She sits on her heels and shrugs her head as she fears her nose might have been broken... Michelle doesn't care one bit though and begins celebrating even before ref counts the sobbing American out! KO6 Michelle Ryan!!!
AFTER: Michelle hasn't won in BBU since November 2013 but scores her first SSB victory since June 2011 to surprise a lot of people who thought she was destined to finish dead last on the Welterweight Revival Order Of Merit! But she just tore Katharine McPhee's nose into a bleeding mess to indicate she's not without a chance against fellow European Karen Gillan in the 5th place battle come two weeks time! England vs Scotland in Las Vegas? Just few weeks ago that seemed impossible but has now become a reality...
Spare a thought for Katharine though, she was projected as the sexiest girl of the lot and really touted as the dark horse but now swallows the second bitter pill of the cruel Revival reality.. drawing Megan Gale was bad luck, getting your nose mauled into a bloody mess by a BBU girl was... errm... that almost defies common logic for anyone supporting the California brunette... heck, even Odette Yustman gives McPhee some words of encouragement on twitter and promises to take her for a tour around Lioness Club facilities before the summer... but the biggest news emerges hours after the event when the medical evaluation confirms that Katharine indeed escaped the broken nose black scenario and has been offered a fight from none other than Amanda Righetti who had been send in queue for the lineal welterweight title until Bridget Regan and Cassidy Freeman settle it among themselves on the upcoming PPV!
Final result: Michelle Ryan def. Katharine McPhee KO6.
