TESS VALMORE
This second round of the welter tournament certainly didn’t do my prediction record any good. I missed every fight. The upsets of Patton and Gale were particularly surprising. I certainly didn’t see them coming in my wildest imagination
GILLAN / O’KEEFE O’Keefe looked good early taking three of the first four rounds and giving Gillan a fat lip at the end of the fourth. Gillan changed her tactics in the fifth, choosing to get in close and the exchanges went her way. It was a Gillan body attack in the sixth that ultimately decided the fight. O’Keefe didn’t recover between rounds and in the seventh was easy prey for Gillan, who ended the fight with a hook to the ear that left O’Keefe out cold
McPHEE / M.RYAN Like O’Keefe in the previous bout, McPhee got off to a good start winning three of the first four rounds including scoring a knockdown in the third. Ryan turned the fight around with a right to the nose that left McPhee in pain and a bloody nose at the close of the fifth round. In the sixth, another hook to the nose sent McPhee down where she was counted out on her knees
LANCASTER / PATTON Patton was the heavy favorite to win this tournament. Lancaster was a dark horse to say the least. with little money being bet on her in Vegas. Someone forgot to tell Lancaster she wasn’t supposed to win Her strategy was work the body which she did for the first four rounds even though she lost two of the four. In the fifth, her body attack caused Patton to drop her arms. Lancaster drilled Patton with an overhead left to the ear and followed with a right to the nose that dropped Patton. Patton made it to her feet, but was an easy target as Lancaster pounded away at her, causing Patton to give up and beg the ref to stop the fight
GALE / ATKINSON If Patton wasn’t going to win this tournament, then it would be Gale. For the first three rounds it looked like indeed she was going into the final fight for the tournament championship In the fourth, everything changed as Atkinson started landing the harder punches. It was a little brawling with some JMD included, In the seventh, a hook to the eye sent Gale to the canvas. She got up and managed to finish the round. In the eighth, Atkinson pounded Gale at will and then finished her off with an overhand right to the head in the ninth.
