Ariana Grande vs Kristin Kreuk
(Words: Front Street / Results: Lookout!)

BEFORE:

Kreuk, as usual, dismissive of a younger, less-decorated opponent. "You know, when I beat Kunis, the deal was, she was going to be my gatekeeper. So, why in the hell am I fighting some flash-in-the-pan Nickelodeon girl? Aren't these girls supposed to get by Mila first? And this one is so bad, I'm sure even Kunis could handle her."

Ariana giving as good as she gets in the pre-fight, anyway. "Kreuk doesn't intimidate me. I've heard all about her and how nasty she is in the ring and all that, but, when you break it down, she's nothing but a .500 fighter, who's on the downside of her career. The future of this division is young, athletic girls like me. And Kristin's going to find out that the future is now."

ROUND ONE:
The future is now. Grande is nothing if not athletic. She has dancer's feet, and they're on full display early in this round. She's on her toes, bouncing, moving, popping out jabs, powdering Kreuk's face, and Krissy not liking it at all. Kreuk trying to square, using her own good feet to try to match footwork, but she can't get it done. Grande's too quick, too slick, she's here, there, and everywhere but where Kreuk wants her. Ariana's confidence builds as the round goes on. She goes from one-punch stuff to putting punches together, but always keeps the feet moving. Krissy's reduced to counter-punching, and not very effectively at that. It's all moving-target stuff, and it works like a charm for the tiny 21-year-old, who more than offsets Kreuk's height, reach, and experience with pure athleticism and grabs the first and the 10-9 lead.

ROUND TWO:
Kreuk begins giving ground. This has to burn the veteran inside, but, chasing the younger girl didn't work, so adjustments are necessary. Kreuk's keeping the guard high and using a backward drop step to turn with Ariana, staying inside and turning in smaller circles, allowing her to keep up as the singer circles wide around her behind the jab. Kreuk's able to square this way and get flurries off for the first time. Grande keeps working, however, keeps landing the snappy left and dropping in clean rights behind it, but, now, we have two-way action, and the veteran Kreuk is getting in rhythm. Krissy's finding range much better, picking off the less-experienced girl's punches and finding every hole in her defenses and filling it with leather. The round is competitive, with Ariana still scoring plenty with her speed, but Kreuk claims the points and evens things at 19.

ROUND THREE:
Krissy's found something that works and she's staying with it. She's moving the head and the hands, making Grande work to target the jab. Ariana getting a little sloppy at times, forcing things as inexperienced girls frustrated by good defense will sometimes do. And Kreuk, as crafty veterans will ALWAYS do, makes her pay, picking her up with solid counters, snapping her head back with good right hands. Grande's still game, still bouncing athletically, snapping jabs, but she's not getting many home, meaning she can't follow up and put punches together, but Kreuk can. Krissy's slowly taking command as the round goes on. She's got the geometry and it's working perfectly. Hands and feet are working together to touch up Ariana from bell to bell. It's Krissy's round easily, and she grabs her first lead 29-28.

ROUND FOUR:
Grande slows her roll. In a good way. Instead of forcing the pace with her feet, she breathes. She slows things down a bit, not turning with Krissy now but slipping, sliding, moving the head and shoulders, bouncing, staying in front, and setting up her punches with that movement, cutting down Kreuk's opportunities for counters. And the hand speed plays. Ariana beats Kreuk to punches, gets the jab home again, then is able to work off it to build flurries. Kreuk's still scoring in counter, but not as often. And Ariana's able to dictate with her speed and quickness. She's fighting lead in the right way, getting to spots, getting leather home, scoring points with both hands, making the veteran react instead of act. It's good stuff from the youngster, good enough to earn her the points and even this thing at 38.

ROUND FIVE: Grande's adjustment continues to work. She's willing to take her time, sacrificing high volume to cut down on openings for the veteran's counters. And, again, the hand speed makes this work. Grande's getting off first, making Kreuk cover up, throwing her over to the defensive, often avoiding Kreuk's responses by simply not being there to receive them. Kristin patient. Waiting for her opportunities and taking full advantage of every one, but, there simply aren't as many as there were in earlier rounds. Then again, sometimes you only need the one. It's a scintillating straight right hand that comes in counter. It catches Grande flush on the chin and her body simply rag dolls to the mat. Ariana ends up in a puddle at the former champion's feet. Kreuk actually steps over her on her way to a neutral corner, where she waits as the count passes the unmoving youngster by. That quickly, it's done. One perfect punch, and your winner by KO5 is Kristin
Kreuk.

AFTER: Kreuk unsmiling in the aftermath, again wants to know why she's even fighting girls like Grande, who's still being brought around on her stool. "I think it's about time I get a better class of opponent, don't you? I mean, here I am, a former champion, a top contender, and I'm starching some girl who's barely ranked in the top one hundred, while talentless trollops like Lowndes and Hudgens fight for the gold. This is ridiculous and it needs to change. Right now."
