BEFORE:

"It's a big opportunity, obviously," says Joss with a nod. "It's hard to get fights in the FCBA when you don't have management, and you can't get management without getting fights. Well, I'm as good as a lot of the girls in FCBA stables. And, I'll prove it tonight."

"This girl can box, no question," says Leelee. "She's got usable length, a good jab. And, obviously, she's coming in here with nothing to lose, so, yeah, she's dangerous. But tonight isn't her night."

ROUND ONE:

O'Dell: "Back at ringside, and that's 'Karma' and that can only mean the young lady who sings that song, the lovely Joss Stone, is on her way to the ring..."

Tess: "And Leelee makes an interesting point about Joss. We've seen her at Asylum before, and she's shown that she IS an effective boxer. We'll see if she can use that ability to pull the upset tonight."

O'Dell. "Stone into the ring and helped off with the robe to reveal that white number we've seen before, and that's 'Uprising' by Muse banging through the arena and here comes 'The Polish Princess', Leelee Sobieski!"

McCarthy: "One of Weirdo's two REAL fighters, and, once again, it's clear he has me BUGGED at ringside, since I've been suggesting for YEARS that he get rid of all his OTHER welters and push Sobieski, and that's exactly what he's done. I ought to send him a BILL for my services!"

Cassie: "Don't people who pay for your services usually just leave a twenty on the night stand?"

McCarthy: "YOU LITTLE..."

O'Dell: "Now, calm down, Mac and let's turn our attention to the ring where Leelee is helped off with the robe by Jewel and Neve to reveal that familiar black two-piece she wears and we're just about ready to go. Let's get some picks. Tess favors Leelee. Mac?"

McCarthy: "Sobieski is, again, a REAL fighter, not a Dancing Hooker. Stone, as I've said before, has ability, but she doesn't have the experience to hang with Sobieski. Leelee wins."

O'Dell: "Cassie?"

Cassie: "I agree with Tess!"

O'Dell: "There's the bell, and Stone not making any secret of her strategy as she goes right to the long left poke off the bell. She's moving the feet, popping the jab, working for distance and angles here, getting that left in Leelee's face..."

Cassie: "Stone very rangy, very. Actually has a bit of reach on Sobieski, though they're the same height..."

Tess: "Weighed in right at 130 for this one, so she's not giving up much weight, either."

O'Dell: "And, as she's shown us previously, Joss can box. She's got good hands to go with all that range, and she knows how to put punches together, and that's what she's doing right now. She's not hurting Leelee, but she's getting off and scoring. Sobieski more retrospect, looking to counter."

McCarthy: "As I said when she was here before, Stone has the tools to be effective...length, hand speed and good feet. Use those, you can give girls trouble. Her problem in the few fights she's had has been her chin, but, it's a pretty small sample size to make any pronouncements about that."

O'Dell: "And it's not being tested here in the first. Sobieski limiting her efforts to counters right now. Feeling out the more active Joss. Working the feet to stay with the singer, who's moving very well behind the left hand. Final seconds tick off in the first and Stone banks the round."

Cassie: "This is what we've seen from Joss before. If she can handle or avoid power, she's going to be very competitive."

ROUND TWO:

O'Dell: "Into the second, and Joss right back to work. Stone ranging in with that long left, locating, touching, setting Sobieski up for right hands. Leelee a bit more aggressive in counter this round, coming back with multiple punches, trying to extend rallies."

McCarthy: "Wants to bring that power to bear. That's where Sobieski has the edge."

O'Dell: "Stone playing it smart, though. Not being drawn into pitched battle. She wants skirmishes, skirmishes where she gets off first and can control pace and length. Still moving well, keeping the feet going, getting the angles she wants."

Cassie: "But Leelee a lot busier this round, Jenny. She's working to match footwork and get her own leather home."

O'Dell: "Hasn't looked to establish the jab yet, however. Content to fight in counter and take advantage of the openings Stone's giving her with Joss' own offense. Final thirty seconds of the second, good two-way flurry and there's another! Stone landed a good right in there and Sobieski responded with one of her own. Five seconds left. Good counter right hook from Leelee at the bell. Close round, but Stone's."

Tess: "And Joss getting what she wanted here early. Boxing her way to a 20-18 lead."

ROUND THREE:

O'Dell: "We begin the third with more boxing from Stone. Sobieski turning up the aggression a little more in response. Leelee stepping in, looking to pass the jab and get to mid-range..."

Tess: "This is something you don't see much from Leelee. She's a girl that likes to fight ranged, use that big, heavy jab, drop rights off it..."

O'Dell: "Indeed, she does, but, Stone showing she can play that game pretty well, and Leelee responding by changing the terms some here. Stone responding with a drop step, trying to maintain distance. Sobieski moving the feet, slipping forward to close again and get off in combination."

McCarthy: "This is heady stuff from Sobieski, a half-game. She's not looking to close and bang with Stone, which might be difficult the way Joss moves. She just wants to manage the distance, not let Joss extend on the jab..."

O'Dell: "And that's exactly what she's doing. Stone still scoring, of course, but that nice, smooth rhythm she was in broken now, and Leelee's gone from countering to fighting lead, throwing Stone to the defensive at times, disrupting and slowing her offense. Coming down the stretch Stone bounces away to mid-ring and resets, popping the jab. Leelee slipping past, lands a hard flurry that sent sweat flying from Stone's head. Joss a SHARP right hand in response and there's the bell! Sobieski on the board."

Cassie: "29-28 after three. We've got the makings of a good fight here."

ROUND FOUR:

O'Dell: "Fourth begins with Leelee upping the pressure juuuust a bit more. Again, Sobieski not looking to close, just to shorten, to disrupt what Joss wants to do. Stone with that little back step to create the range and Leelee stepping forward to shorten again..."

McCarthy: "When they talk about styles making fights, this is the kind of thing they're talking about. Sobieski not fighting the way she usually fights because she's trying to make Stone less comfortable..."

O'Dell: "And she's doing it. Leelee is slowly gaining the initiative over these past couple of rounds, throwing Stone onto the defensive more and more. Joss was IN rhythm and now she's out. The younger woman working hard to establish that jab again, but not having much success..."

Tess: "Are you surprised that Leelee sort of blinked here, Mac, and came out of what she normally does?"

McCarthy: "Not at all. A veteran fighter knows how to make adjustments and knows when to make them. Stone was going very well those first two rounds, and you want to put a stop to that for a lot of reasons."

O'Dell: "And Sobieski HAS put a stop to it. She's got Stone on her back foot, in bad spots, not able to locate with the left, unable to bring the right into play. Final seconds ticking off and Sobieski methodical here. Step, jab, hook, step, jab, hook, right to the bell."

Cassie: "And, with Leelee getting the round easily, she's evened things at 38."

ROUND FIVE:

O'Dell: "Fifth round and Sobieski still looking to reduce distance. Stone responding with more activity now. She's letting the hands go as Leelee steps forward, looking to slow her advance and score. Sobieski getting off when she gets to mid-range, thumping that hook home."

McCarthy: "Interesting adjustment by Stone. I expected to see more movement, not more volume."

O'Dell: "But, volume is the knob Joss is turning, and she's getting leather home, which is the key. Nothing wild, just good, clean combinations that she's using to gain points and slow Sobieski. Leelee continuing to step in. Not willing to grant terms back to the younger woman."

Cassie: "Sobieski could do worse than working some body here. Neither girl's done much of that."

O'Dell: "Good point, Cassie, but that doesn't appear to be in the game plan, at least for the moment. Instead we're getting solid exchanges led by Joss at range and Leelee in close. Very busy round for both fighters ends with another spirited exchange. Close one. Stone."

Tess: "And Joss back up 48-47 at the half."

ROUND SIX:

O'Dell: "We begin the sixth the way we ended the fifth, heavy fire coming from both fighters. Joss wants to maintain the range, Leelee to cut it some, and both girls getting off effectively from their spots. Stone a good right hand in that flurry. Sobieski steps in, backs Joss up with a right of her own."

McCarthy: "Girls getting a bit more ON these punches now."

O'Dell: "No question about it. Nothing sloppy, but both girls stepping into their stuff a little more. Leelee ducks a left, steps in, lands a good right and and GETS DROPPED BY A COUNTER FROM STONE! Sobieski dropped to her knees!"

Cassie: "Wow. Perfectly placed punch."

O'Dell: "Joss to a neutral corner. Referee counting at three. Four. Sobieski up at five. Doesn't look to be seriously buzzed..."

McCarthy: "Just a flash knockdown. Caught her flush and off balance. But it's going to count the same on the scorecards."

O'Dell: "That it is. Sobieski takes the mandatory and the referee waives Stone forward. Joss playing this smart now, not going all in. Wants to jab for space and she's ranging in very well right now. Sobieski's legs slowed a bit by that punch and Joss taking advantage, grabbing control, keeping Sobieski at bay and on the end of her punches to the bell. Stone BOUNCING back to her corner. Got to be feeling pretty happy with herself right now."

Tess: "And why not? She's up 58-55, a nice lead with four to go. It's not over, but Stone's in the driver's seat."

ROUND SEVEN:

O'Dell: "We start the seventh with that increased volume of Stone's increasing even more. She's getting off in bunches now, finding Sobieski and strafing her with both hands. Leelee not moving as well and Stone making her pay for it."

Cassie: "Stone very smart here. Not pushing anything. Keeping her distance. Scoring. Piling up points."

O'Dell: "She absolutely is. Sobieski unable to get to spots right now, reduced to countering when she gets a chance, but, what she's mostly doing playing defense, trying to get through the barrage of shot that's coming her way from Stone."

McCarthy: "This kid had a plan to win this fight, and the plan HAD to be to build a lead, take this to the cards, and win on points. So far, so good."

O'Dell: "Joss working that left hand, stopping Sobieski with it, following with solid rights. Leelee with the guard high, trying to find spots for counters, but there's too much incoming leather. Final seconds tick away and there's the bell. Seventh to Stone wide."

Tess: "And it's 68-64 with three rounds to go. Sobieski's got a hole to climb out of."

ROUND EIGHT:

O'Dell: "Eighth begins with Sobieski now looking to close and bang. Leelee coming forward behind the big left hand, closing and going body. Stone not going to allow Leelee to dictate terms. She's using a back step to turn and create distance for her jab and follow on rights..."

Tess: "Big change of strategy here for Sobieski, Mac..."

McCarthy: "She's in a big hole. Needs to change the direction of this thing in a hurry."

O'Dell: "Leelee walking through some punches now, working to cut and trap, wants to bring Stone to battle here. Joss tying up, forcing breaks. Getting space that way. Sobieski resolute. She's going to get inside and work one way or the other."

Cassie: "And she's working a lot of body. First time we've seen any of that on either side tonight."

O'Dell: "Having some success doing that. Stone not working back when they get in tight. Instead, she ties up, forces re-starts..."

McCarthy: "More good strategy from Joss. Doesn't want to trade in there with Leelee."

O'Dell: "Thirty seconds to go. Sobieski thumping the jab home, backing Stone up, slipping a right hand and digging some body to the bell. Close round. Leelee."

Tess: "But, Joss still holding a 77-74 lead with just two to go."

ROUND NINE:

O'Dell: "Six minutes to go and, if you just tuned in, you can clearly see which fighter has the lead and which one is trying to come back. Sobieski coming forward, walking through Stone's left. Joss giving ground, trying to manage both risk and Sobieski with her jab."

Cassie: "This is almost a clock running situation for Stone. She knows she's got the lead and if she stays on her feet for the next five minutes, she's going to have pulled a huge upset."

O'Dell: "Stone being very careful, but she hasn't stopped working. She's continuing to jab, to try to maintain distance, also continuing to quickly tie up when Sobieski gets inside, limiting Leelee's ability to get leather home in close."

McCarthy: "And that's key in a situation like this, keep working. You don't want to go into a shell."

O'Dell: "Joss not doing that. She's still working hard to manage Leelee and score points. Stone a solid right hand and DOWN SHE GOES! Sobieski a right hook and Stone takes a seat in the middle of the ring!"

Tess: "Sobieski ate that right hand, kept coming and landed her best punch of the fight."

O'Dell: "Count at three. Four. Five. Six. Stone getting to her feet. She's up at seven. Going to take the mandatory now and the referee waives Leelee forward. Sobieski boring in behind that left jab with fifteen seconds left. Stone backing to the ropes, covering up. Leelee thumping heavy shot at her, but Joss' legs holding up to the bell!"

Cassie: "Big round for Leelee, but Joss survives and still leads 85-84."

ROUND TEN:

O'Dell: "Final three underway and both fighters told what they need to do in their corners between rounds. Both need this round and both clearly know it. Stone laying down fire from the outside, peppering Sobieski with leather, working hard to keep her outside the defenses. Leelee walking through that shell, stepping to, forcing Stone backward with heavy shot..."

Cassie: "Joss willing to give ground, then tie up. She's banking on being able to do enough at range to win the round, and she's outscoring Sobieski at the moment."

O'Dell: "That she is. Leelee walks through a left, lands a right hand. Stone ties up. Sobieski tries to shove off but can't. Referee breaks and Joss back to the jab. Stone circling with a drop step to her right, away from Sobieski's power. Leelee stepping with, banging out her own jab and DROPPING STONE WITH A RIGHT HAND!"

McCarthy: "Cross off the jab. Stone was expecting her to step in and she didn't, just let the right go and she landed it pretty clean, Jenny!"

O'Dell: "Joss knocked to her back and she's still there at three. Four. Five. Stone rolls to her belly. Six. Seven. And pushed to her feet at eight! Stone beats the count. Referee going to give her the mandatory and waive Leelee forward. About a minute to go and Sobieski in seek and destroy mode. She backs Stone to the ropes with that left hand. Leelee double and triple tapping the jab. Joss in a high guard, countering in the odd spot, trying to slide along the ropes and slip away. Sobieski keeping her pinned. Ten seconds left. Leelee jabbing, Joss fires back a heavy flurry but Sobieski blocks most of it and there's the bell!"

Tess: "And there's one of those hugs Mac hates..."

O'Dell: "Completely understandable in this case. Great fight and plenty of respect being shown..."

Cassie: "And, if our cards are right, Leelee's pulled this thing out with knockdowns in the last two rounds."

O'Dell: "Decision coming back and it is 94-93 in favor of your winner by UD10 in, as our former commissioner was won't to say, 'comeback fashion', 'The Polish Princess', Leelee Sobieski!"

AFTER:

O'Dell: "Let's go up to the ring and Tess Valmore!"

Tess: "I have our winner, Leelee Sobieski, and, Leelee, that was a heck of a fight..."

Leelee: "Sure was. She's tough to deal with because of her accuracy and all that reach. As you know, Tess, I like to box, but it's hard to do that with her. She's got good hands and feet and she's very long. So, I had to change tactics a bit to turn things around."

Tess: "Didn't look like you were going all out for the KO in that last minute..."

Leelee: "Well, I'd had her down twice and she beat the count both times. I'm not sure I was getting her out of there in sixty seconds, and there was no point in taking unnecessary chances. Besides, maybe she deserved to end the night on her feet, you know?"
