BEFORE:
"It's always fun to come to Asylum, and even more fun to fight here," says Jill with a smile. "And, getting a chance to get in the ring with Grace again is just icing on the cake."
"This is something I've always wanted to do again," says Grace with a smile of her own. "I'm a big bantam. Jill's a small light. We're a good match, and, despite what happened the first time, I'm looking forward to another shot at her."
ROUND ONE:
O'Dell: "Back at ringside, and that's 'Hawaii Five-O' by The Ventures you hear, and here comes The Korean Krusher, Grace Park!"
Tess: "Jill getting the honors tonight for two reasons, first, she's undefeated at Asylum with wins over both Swan and Arterton, and, second, she beat Grace when they fought the first time, way back in 2010, five months before Grace signed with Front Street..."
McCarthy: "And only Weirdo would have signed a girl coming off three straight knockouts over a total of eight rounds..."
Cassie: "Worked out pretty well, though, because Grace won the bantamweight championship..."
McCarthy: "And I STILL haven't forgiven that overrated DeCesare for spitting the bit in the 13th and handing this stick figure the belts! She's a blot on the history of the bantamweight gold!"
Cassie: "You mean, the belts currently held by Allison..."

O'Dell: "...a little fast on the trigger, boys! Let's calm down, shall we and focus on Grace Park climbing into the ring to be helped off with the robe by Jewel and Neve. Grace wearing that medium blue two-piece she favors, and that's 'In The Hall Of The Mountain King' by Edvard Grieg, and that can only mean..."
Cassie: "Jilly WAGS! Jilly WAGS! Jilly WAGS!"
O'Dell: "The lovely Jill Wagner of the Bazz Fight Club is making her way to the ring..."
Tess: "Wagner no doubt a Top Twenty light. Had a title shot earlier this year against Katy Perry. And, of course, Grace a Top Twenty bantam and former champ. This should be a lot of fun!"
O'Dell: "Wagner into the ring and helped off with the robe. Wearing that zebra striped bikini that never fails to get a rise out of the crowd..."
McCarthy: "She looks like Jayne Mansfield compared to stick-figure Park..."
O'Dell: "And, it's time for some picks. Tess favors Jill. Mac?"
McCarthy: "A good wind could blow Park away. So can Wagner."
O'Dell: "Cassie?"
Cassie: "I agree with Tess!"
O'Dell: "All three ladies going with Bazz. Let's see if they're right. Opeing bell and both ladies making with the long left hand. We're likely to see some serious boxing tonight, as both of these fighters are quick, slick boxers, both crafty veterans who are excellent defensively, and both are in terrific shape..."
McCarthy: "Wagner sometimes gives up some size and power at light...definitely did against Perry. But, she's got the advantage there in this one..."
O'Dell: "Not a huge one, but, yes, she does. Not that it's coming into play at the moment, because we have the ranged boxing both these girls are so good at. Both fighters getting extension on their punches, using the lefts to set up right hands."
Cassie: "And, look at all the movement. Nobody's dancing or circling, but watch the footwork, the slide steps, the head and shoulder movement. Look at the hand movement."
O'Dell: "Neither fighter giving the other much to hit, but both managing to find, put punches together in spots. Grace more active, as you'd predict with her high work rate, but Jill a little more effective right now, landing a little higher percentage, getting a little more leather on target to the bell. Wagner in an excellent first."
Tess: "10-9, Jill. And every point could be key in a fight like this."
ROUND TWO:
O'Dell: "We begin the second with the fighters back at range, both working their lefts, both showing a ton of movement, especially the hands and head, making it difficult to find. Park upping the work rate now, getting off in combination, forcing Wagner to cover up..."
McCarthy: "And Jill answering with hard right hands in counter. Looking to time with power."
O'Dell: "Park doubling that jab to set the stage for the right hand, getting off good flurries. Sometimes only one or two land, but she's piling up points and suppressing Wagner's offense to a point. Jill not used to this kind of work rate up at lightweight, Cassie..."
Cassie: "No, she's not. But, she'll adjust. Just you watch."
O'Dell: "Moving into the final thirty seconds of another good two-way round. Grace having the better of the exchanges, but Jill holding her own, having her moments, definitely scoring well in counter. Five seconds left, another good flurry by Park and there's the bell. Grace evens it."
Tess: "19-19. We expected close, and we're getting it."
ROUND THREE:
O'Dell: "Third picks up where the second left off. Park very busy, putting together fast-paced but lengthy combinations, forcing Jill to the defensive. Wagner firing back solid in counter, but she's not able to create the volume Grace is generating."
Tess: "Jill again picking off and ducking a lot of these, but there's so much leather flying that some of it's bound to get through."
O'Dell: "Wagner trying to slow Park down, firing hard right hands in counter and WOBBLING GRACE WITH ONE! Perfect right hand through a keyhole that shook Park and now Wagner over to the offensive immediately. Jill like a buzzsaw and Park backs and covers..."
Cassie: "Jilly Wags knows how to finish and she's all about doing that right now."
O'Dell: "Park backs to the ropes and goes into a high guard. Wagner fighting lead, Grace now firing back in counter. Complete role reversal with one big right hand. Wagner very sound, very clinical, setting up her punches, dealing well with Park's head and shoulder movement. Not going to get the finisher she wants, but, at the bell, it's Jill wide."
McCarthy: "And Wagner's back in front 29-28 after three."
ROUND FOUR:
O'Dell: "Into the fourth now and Jill getting very aggressive and very physical. Wagner walking forward, backing up Park, sitting down on her punches in a big way. Grace in a fighting retreat, countering well, willing to give the ground at this point..."
Cassie: "This is good stuff from Park, frankly. She's managing Jill pretty well with Wagner trying to consolidate."
O'Dell: "Indeed she is. Wagner definitely looking to dictate terms now, and she's able to do that to a point, able to work forward behind that left hand, but Grace exacting a price for it in those counters. Park usually fights lead, but showing more than a little ability to counter punch effectively..."
McCarthy: "Still like Wagner's strategy, though, and, speaking of girls showing an ability to fight differently than usual, Jill doesn't usually fight a physical walk-them-down style, but you're seeing that right now."
O'Dell: "And, again, she's doing it effectively. Wagner getting her points, Park getting hers. None of this is any surprise, frankly. We expected a closely-fought contest, and we're getting it. Ten seconds left. Good right hand from Park at the bell. Close round. Jilly Wags."
Tess: "And that puts Wagner up 39-37 with six to go."
ROUND FIVE:
O'Dell: "Fifth begins with Jill pushing forward again. Wagner wants to take canvas, and Park is willing to cede it in dribs and drabs, executing that fighting retreat, getting counters on target and slowing Jill's advances repeatedly."
Tess: "Grace showing a lot of accuracy right now, and she's improving the work rate, putting together nice flurries in counter."
O'Dell: "Wagner, again, getting her points as well. Jill has an excellent jab tonight and she's locating well with it to set up right hands and allow the forward motion she wants. And Park makes her pay for every step."
Cassie: "I don't think anyone thought we'd see the fight we're seeing right now when this thing started."
O'Dell: "Agreed. The thought was definitely that we'd see boxing like we did in the first three, but the terms have changed and both fighters seem comfortable with that. Park SMOKING Wagner with a hard flurry. Jill stopped for a second but gets back moving forward, landing a good one-two at the bell. Close, but Park's round."
McCarthy: "48-47 Wagner after five."
ROUND SIX:
O'Dell: "Sixth round starts with more pressure from Wagner. Park greeting Jill's advance with more sharp counter-punching, again slowing Wagner, making her take leather for every step of the advance..."
Tess: "Jill not going to change tactics, though. Looks like she's committed to pushing forward."
O'Dell: "And, despite the points Park's scoring in counter, this has been effective for Wagner. She IS making Grace give ground and she's scoring on the front foot. Park slick, though, picking some of this off and very effective in response..."
Cassie: "Got to admit, I'm surprised Jill is continuing with this, but, gotta respect Jilly Wags. She knows what she's doing."
O'Dell: "Into the final thirty seconds of another competitive round. Wagner a good right hand, and Park responds with a solid flurry. Both fighters very active, and, despite the good defense on both sides, lots of leather getting home as a result. Five seconds left. Good exchange there. And there's the bell. Competitive again, but Park."
McCarthy: "57-57 now. Anybody's fight with four to go."
ROUND SEVEN:
O'Dell: "We begin the seventh with Wagner pressuring and Park countering. We've had these terms for several rounds now, and both fighters making them work. Jill determined to grab canvas and Grace determined to make her pay a price for it..."
McCarthy: "Wagner may be thinking attrition now. She's the bigger girl, so that would be a solid strategy."
O'Dell: "Jill a solid right, big flurry in counter from Park and WAGNER STAGGERS HER WITH A STRAIGHT RIGHT!"
Cassie: "THAT'S what Jill's been thinking. Rocked Grace once early and she's been working ever since to do it again."
O'Dell: "And she's done it in a big way. Park immediately backed into the ropes and taking heavy fire from a determined Wagner. Jill lasering in with right hands. Park in a tight guard, picking off some of this, but plenty of leather getting through.
Tess: "I've said before that Wagner's one of the most underrated lights in the FCBA, and you're seeing why..."
O'Dell: "Grace staying busy enough to prevent the ref from stopping the thing, but it's Jill romping her way to the bell, pitching a shutout in the seventh."
McCarthy: "And going back in the lead, 67-66."
ROUND EIGHT:
O'Dell: "Eighth underway and Wagner all over a still-buzzed Grace Park. Jill walking through Grace now, backing her up with every punch. Park in retreat, organized, but no longer the fighting retreat of the previous rounds. She's jabbing back in spots, but being mostly suppressed by Wagner."
McCarthy: "The stick figure's in BIG trouble and she knows it. She's in survival mode right now."
O'Dell: "And Jill is set to 'seek and destroy'. Wagner battering Park back to the ropes now and going to work on the body. Grace keeping the guard up, willing to ship the shell to the body. Jilly Wags working up, then back down. Wagner clinical right now, Cassie..."
Cassie: "This is vintage Jill Wagner. Athletic. Quick. Uber skilled. And smart as a whip."
O'Dell: "And, you're seeing all of that right now. Jill in control, slowly pressing down on the accelerator, staying sound, not leaving Park any openings for big counters, thumping away, wearing the smaller woman down right to the bell. Wagner wide in the eighth."
Tess: "And Jill now leads 77-75 with two to go, but she's in firmer control than that would indicate."
ROUND NINE:
O'Dell: "Wagner pressing down a bit more on the gas in the ninth. Jill very aggressively forward, walking Park down. Grace hanging in a bit better this round, fighting back with solid flurries, able to get off on the front foot a little..."
Cassie: "Grace seems to have some of the legs back, but she's looking somewhat reduced, not able to hold ground as well and the work rate not the same."
O'Dell: "No question about it, and Wagner has clearly noticed and has to know that if she can pocket the ninth, the tenth is going to be all but academic. Wagner a good right hand and SHE DROPS PARK WITH A LEFT HOOK!"
McCarthy: "Stick figure down! Stick figure down!"
O'Dell: "Park on her hands and knees. Jill to a neutral corner. Count at three. Four. Five. Six. Grace trying to push to her feet at seven. Eight. Nine. Park up...did she beat it...NO! Referee waives it off! Got to ten before Grace was standing and it's over! Your winner by KO9 and STILL undefeated at Asylum, Jill Wagner!"
Tess: "Check the replay here and watch as Grace gets to her feet. Freeze here. Referee at ten, Grace not yet on her feet. Correct call by the ref to end it here."
AFTER:
O'Dell: "Let's go up to the ring and Tess Valmore!"
Tess: "I have our winner, Jill Wagner, and a little different Jilly Wags in there today..."
Jill(smiling): "Well, boxing with her is an iffy proposition. She's a buzzsaw and scores in bunches. You spend ten rounds trying to out-box her, you probably won't get your hand raised."
Tess: "So, the idea was to get physical..."
Jill(nodding): "I figured I was stronger, heavier. I thought I could wear her down if nothing else. Ended up catching her a good one, so, it all worked out..."
Tess(smiling): "Still undefeated at Asylum..."
Jill(grinning): "And I plan to keep it that way!" |
